Ha got here before Mr Gonnerman. What a game just brilliantly executed and a fantastic community behind it too. When big ttrpg companies are going for cash grabs it is nice to see something that is just created for the love of the game.
Been playing dnd 5e and pathfinder 1e and 2e for quite sometime. Wanted to run a campaign with my kids aged 11, 11, and 14. Thought about trying Dungeon Crawl Classics, but stumbled upon this and it’s a perfect fit. Less fluff, more fun without all the crunch. Great review. Thanks!
You're welcome! Dungeon Crawl Classics is cool too and I own it (I am planning on doing a review at some point) but I feel it's meant more for long-time and experienced players who want to focus on mostly role play with high probability of death and characters with strict penalties; you literally start with zero level characters with no class or abilities. Basic Fantasy is a perfect blend of old school and challenging for experienced players as well perfect for new players.
If anyone misses their long-gone 1981 Basic boxed set but also thinks it could have used a few tweaks, this is the game to buy. It hits me right in the feels. I was so moved by it (and the amazing community of users behind it) that I wrote a book for it. If anyone watching this today has an original module from back in the day, tools, ideas, or anything that you wish you could share with people, you should come to the website forum.
This really is a neat play system with excellent value. Not to mention you can put as much or as little into how you visualize the game as you want. It could just be theater of the mind with literally just a map of where you want to go or you can go all out and create terrain and miniatures and the whole world. The skies the limit for what you want to put into it. The only challenge is finding people to play with you. My wife, my aunt, and I all work full-time so we barely have enough time to sit down and do anything and by the time we do usually most nights we just want to come home, make dinner, watch a movie, or lay down or both LOL but maybe one of these days I'll put on my dungeon master's cap and throw caution to the wind and open up a wonderful world of mystery and adventure for them. Plus I have like 10 sets of clickety clackety math rocks that have never even seen a game and I'm ready to use them. Call me a dice goblin if you will, they're just so cool. Not to mention there is a shop at one of my local malls that sells dice for as cheap as three dollars a bag for a full set.
Finding the time and energy to play is always a challenge to be sure (work gets in the way) and gathering everyone long enough to play a session (these days my wife has her phone glued to her hand like a permanent appendage). It's one of the reasons I'm doing this channel so I can share this hobby with folks who can somehow carve out the time and energy to play in these crazy times. 🤪
I am looking for a basic fantasy rpg group. I started playing this back in the 80’s. Its almost the same game. If anyone knows where to find groups playing this remote, i would like to find them.
Sound track going while you are covering the materials is very distracting. Maybe just limit it to intro and outros and any montages where you aren't actually talking?
Looks like a great game, will be interesting to try out 🙂. I think it's unnecessary to critique another RPG during a review because they are both great RPGs but overall a great review 🙂.
I'd play Basic Fantasy. There's a game system out that simulates by great rules game systems combined into 1. Like D&D, Dungeon World, 4AD, and DCC. This game system I love is called D100 Dungeon by Martin Knight! It brought back the feelings of exploration and discovery I had in the 80's with D&D Red box.
Cool. I do have Dungeon World. D100 looks interesting 🤔 is it a solo adventure game? Because I've been looking into those over the years. There was one called Ironsworn I think. Thanks for letting me know about D100. It'll give me something to look into more.
Morgansfort is a good campaign setting, frontier style, if you're looking for something other than the modules to craft your own adventures. I'm currently watching a cool anime called Mushuko Tensei which would fit into Morgansfort pretty well. Anyway, thanks for watching and have a blessed day.

Yup. Definitely feels like it's about the love of the game. You said it very eloquently and succinctly. God bless.

I have all of those old modules as pdfs, but it'd be cool to have tweaked versions or ones under the Basic Fantasy umbrella. 🤔
I still get giddy when my book gets a shout out!!
Ha! Awesome 👌 Hope you find plenty of treasure in the Dungeon. 😀
Nice overview of a very complete and accessible system!
Thanks 😊 Have a blessed day!

Affordable price of free. I just love Basic Fantasy.
Great video. Thanks for the introduction.

Very dramatic music starting about a third way into the video 😂. The other books in invoke that feeling
Glad you enjoyed the dramatic music.
Good review and criticism. The background music was too loud and was hard to hear you sometimes.
Yeah, I'm stuck with the music on this one forever.... I failed the saving throw against a dark spell 🙃 🤪
Good, well organized rules. Essentially streamlined old school D&D with d20 ascending AC system. The adventure modules are a little flaky though.

Funny, it is a cross of Basic 70's-80's D&D and 2e AD&D
Dang bro...turn the music down!
You should check out Lavender Hack as well.
what's that? I'm always interested in other role-playing games.
Maybe write a script and then follow it... this review kind of rambled for 25+ minutes. I liked the music tho.
If you had better things to do during that time, you would’ve been doing them.
