    The chords in the background obviously dictate the tonality, so they are equally important when commanding different modal sounds.       Are you using the same root note for every mode, or are you going through the same scale, and changing the root note based on the degree?

    Ugggh that mixolydian is so dirty, it's the most psychedelic-y sounding mode to me.

      It's a favored mode of many Jam Bands, ranging from the Allmans (Ramblin Man) to the Dead (China Cat) to Phish (Divided Sky).

    This is fantastic. Lydian and Dorian are always my favorite go to. Over at my channel I have a video called "Guess that mode". It's a game to test your ear. You should make a game with this. It would be great to practice "hearing" the modes and see how well you know each mode.

    Maybe i'm weird, but I enjoyed Locrian the most followed by Dorian. The fact that Locrian doesn't have a really strong resolution just makes it super cool that you were able to work around that well. Nice work.

      You damn snowflake! If you don't like the dorian and lydian mode then just leave the guitar and buy a freaking drum! Several musicians fought for our rights to play the major and the pentatonic scales, don't disrespect them! XD

    Guitar student of 6 months here (I still suck but I'm working on it); this video helped out so much with my understanding of modes. I can look at diagrams all day, but getting the feel of them has been impossible 'til now, and hearing them back to back like this really cleared things up. I have a feeling I'll come back to this one. Thanks!

      It's not the same backing track, he's playing different chords for each mode, they are just all in the same key center, G.
      Ionan, aka the Major scale: Gmaj7 - Cmaj7
      Dorian: Gm7 - Cdom7
      Phrygian: Gm7 - Abmaj7
      Lydian: G - A
      Mixolydian: G - F - C - G
      Aeolian, aka the Minor scale: Gm - F - Eb - F
      Locrian: Gm7b5 - Gm7b9b5, he's not playing the 3rd in the latter chord, but it's implied by the backing track and his soloing

    Hey! Do a video on the Spanish Mixolydian scale! Also known as the Klezmer scale or Gypsy scale. Start on the fifth scale degree of a harmonic minor scale. Sounds so dope!

      Aaron 102 Didn't they sometimes use the double harmonic scale ? it's used a lot in arabic music so that could be something close to Egyptian-sounding

      Double harmonic minor(gypsy scale, minor with a raised 7th and raised 4th), Phrygian dominant(raised 3rd, has that iconic Spanish/middle eastern jump), and you can also raise the 7th on the Phrygian dominant to make it extra wide(Byzantine scale)

      Because Satriani often does the same thing in his songs as Tyler does here: switching between different modes with same tonal center. Playing in D lydian then D phrygian or D minor. Things like that

    Hey man! so great!!! could you do a video to show how to create rythm that go well with each mode. It's my problem, I made basic minor or major progressions for each mode depending of the major/minor mode but I don't really know to be closer to the mode sound.

      The 7th chord extensions he used here and there are not important, but the difference between Major and Minor chords is really important, and what's bringing out the essence of each mode.

    were you playing 5 chords or power chords in that backing track???? , Im thinkin probably so to be able to play to major and minor modes and have them sound good over the same progression. Just wondering? Thanks for all the good vids I still haven't checked out all your courses yet but did purchase them all when you did your ten dollar deal couldn't pass that up so I purchased all 5 :). I'm currently doing a couple other courses from some other peeps I purchased prior to yours, but I did check out your exotic scales and was really liking it, need to also get back to it.       He's playing different chords under each mode, and none of them are powerchords.
      Ionan, aka the Major scale: Gmaj7 - Cmaj7
      Dorian: Gm7 - Cdom7

    Two questions- If a backtrack is in the key of C, can you play any of the modes on top of it? Secondly, if a back track is in the key of C, and there’s a diffeeent chord in that chord progression, can you still play those same modes on top? Hope this makes sense!

    Tyler I just wanna ask.... how on earth did you manage to learn to play all of these modes? I may be able to memorise the major scale across the fingerboard, but I feel like I'll never be able to seamlessly know where the root notes/perfect fifths/other important notes are if I change modes, is it just experience? I feel like I'm getting nowhere with my practise of modes.... hope you see this!

      If you arppegiate the Diminished 1, the major VII and then the VI and back to the dim 1, you can form an interesting soundscape- especially if you keep the root of the locrian scale as the base note of the VII and the VI

    So is the mode and the "sound" decided by the note you play the most? Ex: a is the sixth of c major so that would make it aeolian as long as I play c major built around the sixth

      Yeah but these are all modes of the major scale regardless. All the patterns are exactly the same but you are just emphasizing different notes
