- We are officially halfway through my third semester of nursing school and that means it's time for another week in my life. This week we play a bit of catch up, finally get some new hair, take two exams, start a new clinical rotation, help Doug, and celebrate my mom's birthday with some incredible food. hiii! some advice i have as a frequent patient is to always introduce yourself to the patient even in rounds and to always tell them what you are doing! even if it is just vitals! i know that seems pretty simple but it is the little things! especially having so many people in and out it is just nice to know who you are!! i am sure you are going to make a great nurse!!

I’ve definitely had vastly different experiences in clinical depending on the nurse that I’m with. But some things I always try and do that usually help is to let my nurse know I’m here to help them in any way I can and to check in with them throughout the day, to check on their patients often to see if there are any small tasks I can do instead of the nurse having to worry about them, check in with the other nurses and CNA’s to see if they need any help as well or if there are any nursing tasks I can practice with them (finally got to do a catheter last week and I wouldn’t have had the opportunity if I didn’t ask!), and lastly going into rooms with my fellow students if they need help with something or there is something I can watch i.e watching them start an IV or helping them bathe or move a patient. Remember that while sometimes it feels like we are unhelpful or like we are a burden to our nurse, we are their extra hands right now and when we seek out those opportunities it can make it better for everyone! Also it was your first clinical day and it’s totally okay to feel the way you do, I hope the next one leaves you feeling helpful and wanted in the hospital!!

Love your videos! I really hope your clinicals improve, but you’re exactly right that some nurses are burnt out, don’t want to precept, or just don’t have the time/energy to teach.
As a fellow RN, don’t take it personal. It has nothing to do with you and your ability to “nurse.” It’s just unfortunate for everyone involved bc students are there to learn and don’t really have any say with whom they’re paired!

Can I just say it is so nice to see you be less hard on yourself when it comes to studying, test taking, etc. In undergrad, it really seemed like you pushed yourself hard to get perfect grades and often felt guilty for enjoying yourself. At least that's how it came off to the "outside" sometimes! Seeing you just do your best and be satisfied with that is such growth!

You’re doing so great Kiara! It can be hard when your nurse isn’t up for precepting. In an ideal world where we are well staffed with good assignments, it would be a different story. But most of us are on survival mode, and sometimes taking a student just adds to the stress. I’ve found that nurses that I’ve worked with that were initially closed off, eventually apologized and said they were stressed and were then willing to teach. Respect their boundaries, offer to help in small ways. We need nurses like you and and it’s so important to precept! Just know it’s rough out there right now, and don’t take it personally!

I am finishing up my first trimester of OT school at the end of the month! Feels so surreal and it flew by! Going to visit knock off some national parks off my bucket list during our 2 week break!

Love your week in my life videos! I came up to Portland from Eugene last Thursday and the warm air/sun felt so nice! I'm looking forward to future concerts and spending time with people I love & care about who live up in Portland.

I totally get the clinical experience thing, definitely depends on what nurse I get. Hopefully as you gain more experience you feel like you can help out more and feel less in the way(such a universal nursing student feeling lol)! I always find that creating relationships with the NAs on the floor makes a huge difference, they can be a big help when the nurses are overwhelmed. Wishing you luck on this rotation! You got this :)

At the end of this month I will be done with my BA in psychology and will begin working at the children’s psychiatric hospital. I’ll also be spending the next couple of months applying to graduate school. A lot is happening 😊

I’ve definitely had my fair share of nurses who didn’t want a student. I had one unit make me draw straws to see who I was stuck with :(
But thankfully, I’ve also had some amazing nurses that were willing to let me help out a lot! I’ve found that the more things I do to proactively help out, the more they trust me and are willing to teach me. I’ve also had some nurses who need a break so I’ll ask if I can observe a procedure or learn a skill from another nurse
It's always such a toss up! Luckily this week I got the BEST nurse. So grateful for her ❤️
When you were talking about how warm it was there for April I had to laugh because I’m literally in the middle of snowstorm right now! Like, everything is canceled everywhere today and lots of schools and universities have already canceled tomorrow as well. It’s kind of fun until you realize that the snow was just over halfway gone and now it’s going to take another month to melt 🤦🏼♀️ lol. Love the new hair and hope you are all having a great week! ❤️
Lol this video was filmed last week and two days ago it snowed in Portland! The weather is a roller coaster right now 😂 Hope the sun comes out and melts all the snow soon so you can enjoy spring & summer...thanks for watching Scarlett!

The weather in Portland looks good. We had a tornado warning, a fire watch, and a thunderstorm warning all in one day yesterday in Omaha. We also the sirens for tornados go off because of tornado warning and we had seek shelter 🥺🥺. I guess one thing that I am excited about in the next month is moving into my apartment style room on campus and summer preview where we get to meet the students from Class of 2026. Also, your and yours friends hair looks good.

My boyfriend and I bought our first home! We get the keys and start the move at the end of the month! We are also starting to research different shelters in our area, as in the summer when we are moved in and settled, we want to adopt a dog! We are coming up to our 5 year anniversary in May and I have a feeling based on hints he dropped and my sister has that he is going to propose... don't worry I won't be disappointed if he didn't, we JUST bought a house. It's also my nephews FIRST birthday in May. I also work for a radio station and we have so many really cool events coming up!
My dad passed away at the start of the year and it's been the best worst year of my life. A lot of amazing things have happened that I would love for him to be here for, but I can't let that get away of enjoying the big milestone moments.

Oooo within the next month, there is so much exciting stuff happening! 1) gonna complete the first year of my 2 year masters degree 2) my brother is graduating college (nursing actually) so my family is coming into town (bro and I live near each other) 3) my best friends sister is getting married 4) I am starting a payed internship that I am so excited about. I’m currently in the onboarding process for that. Exciting stuff. It’s just getting to the end of the school year that won’t be so exciting, but lots of celebrating stuff to come!

Nurse training is so different in the USA compared to the UK. I did university for 3 years with x2 12 week placements ( in the hospital or community) a year, along side essays and presentations. then you are qualified as a nurse. So different

Ok I'm sorry but I am also a nurse right now on a very busy/burnt out floor, but I cant think of a single nurse I work with who would EVER just sent a student to the supply room to not deal with them! That is wild and honestly so upsetting to hear. I hope you know that not all nurses are like that, and even if people are burnt out we were all students once!

My son applied to 12 colleges, was admitted to all except waitlisted at one but he did not really care about that one. After visiting so many etc it's down to Oregon State or Willamette or Albion College in Michigan. My excitement will be him picking one......lol

The "whatever, it's over" is when I am not confident during exams and then treat myself afterwards. And it's true that everyday is not your birthday, we all have not so good day because we are still on the learning process and some people are not as friendly as we are. Hehe, So it's okayyyyy.
