Putting off the closure decision solves nothing. These people were elected because they ran for the positions and now lack the courage to make the hard choices that are necessary. As for all the "anti-closure" public comments, while their dislike of closures is unsurprising, no one is putting forth any realistic alternatives to deal with the budget realities.

Oakland's relatively compact, the number of students is declining, and most of the public schools have been bad for a long time. But these parents want taxpayers have to throw away more $ just so they don't have to go to a school a bit farther away.

It means that the City of Oakland spends $27K on each student, that is 27K of taxpayers money. Parents should just demand the money and spend it with a single room, single teacher schools for 3-5 kids in a school. Teachers should be free to form any school with any curriculum. This model will give every kid a kind of attention the best education in the world can provide. And create a very competitive market for teachers, historically a very underappreciated profession. In a school of 3-5 students there are not going to be any problems with discipline or comprehension. Too bad there are very parents that ever thought of alternatives. And if someone would prefer a school with even lesser student/teacher ratio - they are free to pay for it out of pocket. Current education model is a total scam of the bureaucrats.
