Hey...that's a BCTW shirt. Your KM-1 Kerfmaker video solved the question of how to make perfect lattice - which is much more difficult than people realize. Now...handmade French rasps to go with my BCTW tool addiction. Tools are great, but having instruction like this is priceless. The Kerfmaker jig is genius and thanks for venturing into the world of rasps.

I love working with rasps, but I can't really justifiy paying $1,500 for the set of rasps you've got. I have to make do with one or two.

I think most people start with one or two.. like im about to ;)

Thanks Paul. I'm waiting for some rifflers to arrive but, being hand made, they do take a while. You have a great set there. I was interested in your comment about the rat tail. I turn holes with a 1/4" spindle gouge on my lathe. I actually need a 1/2" hole which must be smooth down at least 2". The overall length of the hole is 4" the remaining 2" being hollowed on the lathe with a turning tool. I wonder if the rat tail rasp would cut and smooth out the hole to 1/2" from a little over 1/4" made by the gouge. I hope to manually 'twist' the rasp in and out of the hole. What do you think?

Hmm, I don't think you'd get the accuracy you'd want by twisting a rasp in the hole. It is tapered so presumably if you had a rasp with cutters out to 1/2", you could do it, but the hole would be pretty rough and need further refinement with fine rattails. I don't think the rattails come that fine, actually.
Is there no way for you to get a wider gouge to make the hole? or make the hole by offsetting the 1/4" gouge so you are in effect cutting a donut shape that leaves a cleaner 1/2" hole? I don't turn so I may be completely off.

I read how rubbing a little chalk on file surfaces reduces clogging. I was wondering if this is also helpful with rasps?

not necessary with hand stitched rasps, they don't clog

Interesting, I will have to look up this company.

Very nice video. Rasps are like Pokemon, so many and you gotta have them all. How fast do they load and do they clean up easily with a file cleaner brush?

Nice video - ever try the auriou rasps? Those are supposed to be pretty decent as well.

I guess you'd need a CNC rasp stitcher to reproduce the randomness, and just the design cost of such a machine is probably too much to justify producing it… Though I suspect using an industrial arm would not be so difficult…

and i thought that the Auriou are expensive!!!
