- Produced by Auriou Toolworks, this 10-minute video reveals the fascinating world of traditional rasp-making at Forge De Saint Juery in France. Since 1858, Auriou Toolworks has been making free forged hand tools for wood, stone, and plaster. This video will give you an appreciation of the extensive hand work that goes into each tool.

this workshop is ticking as a clock, beautiful.
Having worked as a toolmaker and used many of these different files of various shapes, sizes, and cuts, this gives a new perspective on their manufacture. Dedication to your craft.
Thank you for inspring. Great documentation
This video is a real treat. I've been seeking this info for a while.
Searching for "hand stitched files and rasps" usually returns results concerning needle point or computer files.
Hand made tools are worth every penny. The fact that these are not twice the price is a testament to the skill, and efficiency of these craftsmen.
Thanks for posting.

nice to see some things are still made by hand.
These are beautiful. World class workmanship.
Those are gorgeous! I would so love a set!
I would not want to use them if I had a set of these.
That,.. Is truly Incredible craftsmanship.. Great work guys
It's always a pleasure to watch skilled handworkers.
those are beautiful. thanks for sharing the process with us.
What a fine work
Cheers all you guys
I have seen wood cuts in books of making files and rasps by hand, but I would never have imagined it was still being done today. It was fantastic to see the process.
I've made a few tools, because I didn't have one or when they didn't make one. It warms my soul to see and know that real Craftsman still care to make them ! I will be saving my money to buy a set of carving tools to start with. Thank You T. Morgan Wa. USA
I have several of these rasps and they are worth every penny. Amazing to watch the video.
Never knew so much work was involved Great Video!
Simply WOW.
One of the top ten videos i've watched on youtube fantastic!
So very impressed, these craftsmen are just that, CRAFTSMEN... An honor to posses and use their works of art...
Beautifully made.
Amazing! Beautiful work.
holy hell. the thought never crossed my mind of how a rasp was made in a traditional way. This is extremely educational.
Man that makes me want these rasps even more!
Wow such a Crazy hand work!
Very satysing.
The craftsmanship and attention to detail are impressive.
This video makes one want to purchase these tools simply to support the craft itself -- not to mention that one is getting a first-class tool for a lifetime.
Wow, very impressive!
Incredible....the skill and the patience.
Truly beautiful !
I used these tools working in the wood shop at Lie-Nielsen tools for years to carve and form the saw handles. There's nothing like them. They chew through wood as though it were butter and can make a tough job easy. Even in retirement they are one of the things I truly miss.
RedStretchLimo surely you bought several for your own use tinkering around in retirement ? As well as several of those fine neilsen planes , etc ? I'm still buying em and I've been retired since 07 . From carpentry and woodworking . It's in my blood .
Any tool slices through wood if you sharpen it right
Great post.
That's incredible!
wow!! so much detail
Super work
Hola, Gran trabajo, tenéis unas manos maravillosas.
wow just wow I just had my mind blown.
I did not know how those are made by hand, until today. I really liked this video. very cool! thank you!
I am so impressed and thrilled that this kind of craftsmanship exists today. A wonderful production that I hope will continue in the future...
Bloomin ell that's insane, talk about intricate work. So good.

Very much enjoyed your video and gave it a thumbs up also
I have made rasps but never this big. Thanks for posting this informative video.
Hahaha wow, the eyes nearly shot out of my head when I saw how effortlessly he was putting the the texture on that rat tail by hand!
they soften the metal first.....then harden it.

Amazing...
Awesome video, very interesting
My God that is amazing craftsmanship, It amazing that someone still can make such high quality files with a hammer and punch, I want one of that's files for my handmade tool collection.
That was fascinating! Neat to watch for a 10 minute presentation but it looks like a very tedious job. I hope those craftsmen are well paid for all that detail work!
Wow simply wow
wow very good work
Maestros excelentes , de hoy en adelante apreciaré aún más el valor y la utilidad de las limas . gracias .Mercí .
Awesome
I remember going to garage sales and flea markets back during the 70's and 80's, looking for Sheffield steel?? not sure if that's right. They use to make the finest steel small tools for plastering and such. Rarely you could find some in a box or old tool chest. I'm glad to see that someone is carrying on with the tradition of making what is needed, even if it is in small amounts, to fudge the prices... Thank you for all you do!
Un grand BRAVO à vous pour la réalisation de ces produits d'exception !...
Un bel exemple de la sauvegarde du patrimoine artisanal !!!...

What the actual fuck my mind is blown this is true talent at work
No doubt!
+premiersharpening this inspirational video came up again on my watch list. Man it still amazes me. I make knifes and stuff on my channel but making a file looks so complex
Those are rasps
*and rifflers
Great skills
Thanks for posting this video. I have known about these for a long time but never knew how involved it is to make one. Goes to show you that some things are just not possible in MasterCam.
SENSACIONAL!!!!
Wow this is friggin amazing...CRAZY!
You like the process then look at my videos to see how things like knifes are made
@@DiesInEveryFilm fuck off
great video, thanks. Good to see that not everything is made by some automated process, hope it continues...
VERY GOOD
I was not aware of the workmanship that goes into making these files. I have over the years collected numerous files and I definitely now appreciate more what went into producing them.
Most files are cut by machine, few are cut by hand -- the rasps that are cut by hand are quite saught after because they provide a 'cleaner cut' than machine ones, due to their somewhat 'random' teeth pattern.
Hand cut mill files are practically non-existent, outside of hyper specialised tooling, because there is just no advantage.
Still wonderful to see these made though.
Fantastique, salutations à tous ces ouvriers. Merci de tout cœur.
Look at my channel
Magnifique
that is art!
worth the money....those rifle-ers are a joy to use.....i was amazed at how slowly they quenched the heated final product.....most people wack em in fast as.
Great to see true craftsmen at work and the fact that there were younger people there as well learning these skills thy are so often lost
It pleases me so much to see a company who has kept to traditional ways of making tools long may they continue, wish l had a set of rasps same quality of these instead of my cheap and nasty ones from the far East.

Buy some new auriou ones and some pferd's . The pferd's are getting harder to get , like a lot of the better ones from the past . Like old Nicholson pattern makers files you can only get the 49 & 50 rasps nowadays .
This seems like so much work for an item that wears.
Interesting, beautiful work! Did anyone else notice the tip braking off the half round rasp as the guy is finishing the end in the lead block?
Holy Moly!
Cool.
Just wow I love the skill amazing focus really in the zone 5***** :-)
Check out my videos if you like this one
Quelle merveille! Malheureusement on n'a pas ici au Bresil de ces outils!!!
Классно!
Sweet video, very well produced. I would have loved to see one or two of the rasps being used, to see how fast it cuts and the finish it leaves. Video portrays a Zen like calmness in the craftsman. Even though they are performing a repetitive task day after day the craftsman show an attentiveness and commitment that I feel compelled to respect.
My thoughts exactly.
I just bought my first Auriou Cabinet Rasp. 10" 9 grain. After seeing just how much heart, sweat, and soul these people put into making these rasps i will think of that every time i use mine and thank them for their fine craftsmanship.
You're so dramatic, get real. Gargle diarrhea
Hermosas!!!.. que placer..
Well worth the money for the file. When I use the file I think how great it is that someone still has a skill other than how to turn on a iphone.
8 years later.... nothing has changed.
wow, it's very impressive how much hand work is put into these rasps, are they available in Europe?
Yes, but it is actually easier to buy them through Lee Valley: www.leevalley.com/us/wood/page.aspx?p=65242&cat=1,42524,53823
I heard that guy sometimes has bad days and hammers swear words in braille into the pattern of the file. Thats why it's called the Bastard cut
my bitch pick feels that way...lol.
bastard files are the cut of the file nothing to with the forging
lol you cracked me up with that one
@PLANLOVEGOD: You must be the life of the party when people are telling jokes. Or maybe just a blunt rasp!
how files were made when they were first invented... didn't know anyone was making them by hand in any measure today; thanks very much for the video.
great to see I was the last forger at cook and Nicolson of Sunderland could still forge a file now even after 30 years..
Deben ser muy caras con un proceso tan manual
El trabajo es magnífico
Good tool is a pleasure
Harika bir işçilik el emeği ve göz nuru tebrik ediyorum.
woww
,nice
I love all the comments left by people who obviously don't make things criticising the manufacturing process. Premium tools are worth it if you actually make your living with them.
Indeed the very best handmade rasps and files being made today ! Nobody does it like this any longer because it's labor intensive and costs more....well worth the price compared to Chinese stamped junk . Anyday !
Quite a bit of emotion did I feel when watching this video. I live and work as a furniture restorer and cabinet-maker here in Paris, France. I'm lucky enough to own some dozen of these beauties. Although the teeth are smaller than their industrial counterparts, they really slice into the work with no rip-out. France still has a strong artisan heritage that's unique in the world. It is totally uneqauled in the quality of it's work. If you want proof, look up the story of "compagnonnage". Aurevoir
You've got to be kidding, that's how they are made?
I will gladly pay the price
I will never look at my rasp the same way again!
I can't believe the pattern is hand applied, thats crazy.
Do they temper them after hardening?
