I am a candle person, but I only buy them on sale. My winter favorites: a humidifier for my bedroom (no more nose bleeds), Land O’Lakes hot chocolate, and wool socks.
The candle part made me laugh so much! I also have two scented ones that have been sitting unused and I just discovered the joy of having them burning in the evenings. I used to light them on my table outside when I had people over in the summer but didn't like the idea of lighting them inside (because I'm CLUMSY). Thankfully I got past that fear! Candles are amazing.
If you love the glow of candles, another great option is salt lamps. I have several around my apartment. I was able to score them very cheap (under $15 each at a health food store last Christmas). Sometimes they are quite expensive, $40 each or so, even for a small one. But they are safe to leave on if you leave the room, and in the long run, they are cheaper. They definitely transport me into a state of relaxation.
Re: the Wayfarer series, there is a third one and it was actually my favorite of the series! So far... there is a fourth one coming out next year and I'm so excited 🙏
I have two long fairylights goIng all around in the living room since October three years ago. I switch them on in the dark season - it feels much friendlier inside. Sometimes I'd light additional candles (without smell, can't stand scented candles). It's lovely and cozy!
I think if you liked A Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet, you may enjoy the Murderbot series by Martha Wells. Would recommend, it's about a security unit that hacks its governor consule. Super snarky and really great reads.
I don't like the scented candles, but in the winter I like having normal candles lit. Mostly because I'm a sucker for having an open window so then the candles can help keeping the apt warm, lol. But I also love the smell of a blown out candle. And it gives a cosy vibe, which I love.
My winter favourites: - hot chocolate 'bomb' (a chocolate ball full of marshmallows that melts into the milk!) - electronic tealights with a remote control so I can turn them all on and off at once (lots of 'candlelit' audio books in bed!) - Himalayan salt lamp given to me for my birthday (never thought I'd be that person, but it's such a comforting warm colour) - local evening walks to see other houses' Christmas decorations Hope everyone's having a lovely festive season :)
Those were very much sold out a week into the virus era, and production of them was slow to catch up. Hope you can still find one, they're very cool workout toys
My husband and I love Taskmaster! I bought the taskmaster boardgame from John Lewis and had it shipped to Canada, played with our siblings before lockdown and it was AMAZING.
Haha, I'm the same with candles! Just realized this fall that they're lovely and was genuinely peaceful whenever I lit one. Only took me 28 years 😅. I also used to think it was the most boring and impersonal gift ever, but now I even wished for one for Christmas! Good thing we're allowed to change 😉
I don't do candles but I wish I did. I am always so scared of things burning up, so I wonder if candles would make me more relaxed or not. But I like the thought of them... and when I am with other people that light candles. I just don't do it by myself. Also very fitting that you uploaded this the 13th and talkning about candles as the 13th December is Lucia Day. Where I live that is a really candle (and light in the darkness) heavy festivity.
that is so funny, I had the same change of heart about candles this year too! I just did not care about them before, but this fall/winter I've been so into them.
I've likes candles ever since I was a kid. The dancing light is mesmerizing. Also you can do fun stuff with big candles, bending the wax without disturbing the candle is a sport. :-D
I love candles! I have unscented for the dinner table, citronella for outside to keep the mosquitoes away, and scented/aromatherapy for our bedroom/bathroom. A good quality body candle (usually soy wax) is also very special; it can be used for moisturising, massages or you can just enjoy burning it. :-D
Ooh the Alien films! Here's my nerd reflex response: If you're going to watch any of the other ones, find the Workprint Edit for the third one online somewhere. It's less mangled by studio hacking, and still as artsy as the first two. Maybe watch Prometheus, and only watch the other ones if prepared to mope about them. And go play Alien: Isolation at least halfway through! But yes every Alien thing has that rehashed plot sequence, sadly, just with a new scifi allegory and style to it. The book and t.v. tips are good, will go read/watch those some day soon. These vlogs are fun!
ha yes, i was a candle denier lol. then pandemic happened, winter happened and now they bring me joy. i only use unscented ones as i hate strong non-food smells lol. but for me what it is is the fire...like...fire is so cool.
Have you listened to Potterless? I love it. It's like you get to rediscover hp for the first time. Also deals with JK and transphobia and many social issues that are within the text. But at its core it's hilarious and heartwarming
If you want some more cowboys in space, you should try watching Firefly. Though make sure you watch it the way it was intended, and not the way Fox aired it. It makes so much more sense. And thanks for including the Witch Please Pod cast! I am right there with all the other fans, so finding gems that still let me enjoy HP without it benefiting JKR... it means a lot.
Wife loves candles, I'm fine with them. She can't deal with scents that are a bit artificial smelling/not so natural made (or maybe it's the type of wax used), so it's either plain or more expensive. I enjoy a bath with a bunch of lit candles spread around (safely) and the main light off as an occasional treat before bedtime.
I felt the same way about candles before! But recently I ordered some candles to support a creator I like and they are amazing! Now I light a candle almost every evening. Although, I still won't spend much money on candles.
I was just like you with candles. I got really into them this autumn for some reason though, and now I have quite a few! The IKEA tealights are my favourit echeap ones, followed by wilko, I'm not a fan of the primark ones. For pricier but nicer candles I love TK Maxx, They price them by size rather than brand, so you can get some really lovely ones from £3 - £20 depending on how big they are. I probably have like £100 worth of candles now but I've only spent about £30 which isnt sooooo bad. . . Edit: Also, do you use Duolingo at all? they did a year in review with all your stats and it reminded me of you!
Yes, there is a book 3 of the Wayfares series called "Record of a Spaceborn Few." As for Aliens, when I originally saw it, I felt same as you about the plot points. I think most sequels back in the 70s and 80s were rehashes of the original movie. The original Starwars and Indian Jones Movies were the exception.
I like sweet smelling candles like mocha or apple pie bc they're comforting for me. Recently, I've started buying soy/natural wax candles from small businesses to make me feel better about spending money on them
Blow your candle out after half an hour once the top layer melts, that’s where the scent comes from. Sali Hughes has a great IG video on affordable candles and why they aren’t a waste of money. ✨✨

Yes let's ramble! Aliens is as brilliantly artsy and comprehensively conceived as the first one. But then popculture latched onto the fantasy warfare aspect of it, missed the point of it in the movie, and that made the thing impossible to fully appreciate in retrospect; pop scifi having become what it is today. Luckily, Alien: Isolation didn't kitschify the first movie in popular awareness, like how Starship Troopers/Doom/Halo/Aliens4, etc. messed with the popular understanding of that second movie.

I listened to the first episode of Witch Please and I got so angry I couldn't listen to any more episodes. What really got to me was their reasoning around Hermione, they said that she had to change to become friends with Harry and Ron. No, she didn't have to change! Hermione was really uptight and trying really hard to fit in, once she got some friends she relaxed a bit. Also, everything is seen through Harry's perspective. Before he got to know Hermione he thought she was really annoying, once he got to know her his opinion of her changes, and in turn so does how she is portrayed in the book.
I need to get back into RingFit! I was doing so well with it at the beginning of the year... Then I got a puppy and he ate ring 😂 I replaced it but never got back into it
About the candle thing, I have an overly sensitive sense of smell, and scented candles are THE WORST 😂 People who use them don't really understand how much they smell and I'm always baffled by people who have 2 or more candles lit at the same time 😅 (if it's a really bougie one then I can't even be in the same room as an open, unlit candle)
