Goodnotes! Only thing i wish it had was the voice recording and keeping track in the audio where you are. That is why I would still use notability for my PTO meetings. I’m the secretary and have to type up detailed minutes after. Everything else I much prefer in goodnotes.
Been using notability for 7 years since using iPad Air 1, but after using iPad Pro 2020 I try GoodNotes. Both are good. What I like from notability we can do voice note there
I have watched about 10 comparison videos (for Notability/Goodnotes), and I can say yours is THE best so far. I loved the split screen view, but what I really liked is that you give more details. For example, you are the only reviewer that mentioned that you can change the folder structure to a list (to look more like notability) or that you can change Goodnotes form a page-flip to a continuous page feed. The ONE thing that had me leaning to notability was the record function, and again, you were the only one to point out that you would hear the tapping of the pen on the glass and the audio would be weak if you weren't close to the speaker. Thanks for the review because if it, I am about 99.9% sure I will be team Goodnotes!!
Isn’t it funny how much time people spend trying to decide on $8 app which you can use over and over and 0 decision time buying a latte for $8 that you use once. Strange how we are as humans.
Hi ! I live in a different country and our currency is not $. 8 dollars is quite a lot for a student like me :,) so i have to decide what is the best option.
For anyone who is stumbling onto this video now, notability is changing to a subscription model (though people who purchased the app before Nov. 1st aren’t affected), and goodnotes is on sale for half off currently for today and tomorrow only.
Both allow hand writing notes, typing notes, drawing, importing PDFs for annotating, adding photos, paste hyperlinks in notes, etc. Both apps offer a platform to create colorful notes with highlighting, arrows aimed at diagrams you paste into your document, create shapes, etc. In most cases if you looked at notes by the same person in Goodnotes or Notability, there would be minor differences except in a few areas. Goodnotes has advantages in folder and document organization, in handwriting, paper choices, and templates. Notability has advantages in basic formatting of typed text such as indentations and bullet points (features lacking in Goodnotes), recording a lecture which is in sync with your notes and drawings. If you are usually annotating PDFs, hand writing notes, and drawing, then Goodnotes is likely the better app. If you also type a lot, then Notability with basic text formatting will make the experience much more enjoyable.
I prefer Good Notes. At first I was going to get both but I realized that I didn’t need both because I would ultimately end up only using one. I love customization and organizing things into an endless amount of folders. With the layout of Notability, I felt like I would have gotten bored of the setup and wouldn’t have used it much because it would make it feel cluttered and unorganized. So happy with my decision!!!
@@dsummerssummers15 I am soon planning to buy an ipad pro and install a good note taking app. I will probably go with goodnotes, thank you for your stating your experience!! ❤

This helped so much, as a biochemistry major I had no idea which one would be best for writing on PowerPoint slides and which app had the most organizational tools and stationary options. Goodnotes for the win! Thank you!
I have tried both, I suggest buying both XD, both got their own pros and cons and I find having both is the best choice as you might have different courses that require one but not the other.
I use notability for my history class in my first semester in high school as a junior but than chose good notes more I like it has more features and I can make my pages different colors and neat
I like Notability over GoodNotes because of the following reasons 1. Simple design and easy to organize. I think GoodNote has many features that looks good at the first glance but you are hardly going to use in future. 2. You can stop the annoying automatic screen sleep while using Notability. 3. Voice recording option which is quite useful when you are feeling lazy to write or want to recap. 4. If you are thinking to use iPad for projecting your PowerPoint slider, Notability works flawlessly. GoodNotes sometimes distort the texts and figure from PowerPoint. 5. I was not able to share.png and .txt file directly to GoodNotes. This was smooth with Notability. Goodnotes is good at annotation of .pdf files.
I use GoodNotes and prefer it over notability. However two things really bother me so I give it a 4 out of 5 stars. The first being text. You are right about it being finicky. I have a hard time using and it’s super frustrating. Second, no option for password protection. The latter being what I consider very important. I really hope GoodNotes addresses those two issues to make it 5 stars.
Thanks for your comprehensive overview! I’ve had Notability for the longest time. But as I’m getting into digital bullet journaling, most of the downloadable files are optimized for GoodNotes. All features work as intended by the developer in GoodNotes, where as I have to do workarounds to access some - not all - of the features in Notability. Case closed. Gotta go with the right tools for the right job. GoodNotes it is!
I like both of these apps. I use Notability for lecture notes, primarily because of the recording feature. I use Goodnotes for my assignments because I can write directly on the sheet and easily save it to files to upload or email when it's due. It's possible to save Notability sheets, but it's a bit clunkier.
50% off, yes. But they also have in-app shop where you have to pay to purchase handwriting search feature, which goodnotes 5 provides upfront. Plus, the $10 for goodnotes 5 gives you access to the macOS app as well.
This was a great video. I loved that you divided the screen to show one app or the other, how you explained it... great! I think Good Note would be the one to go :)
I use notability because of its simplicity. I am writing to project on a screen normally (I'm a teacher) and want to not get lost in customization. I love that I can press 1 button and have a new note to write. I like the fact that I can switch pen colors, types, etc without a million pop-up menus for students to see. I can easily upload a note as a PDF to a folder to share. I import PDF's all the time to write on top of for worksheets. While GoodNotes seems to have a great deal more customization, sometimes less options makes life better.
Excellent advice for someone like me who is trying to choose between the apps. I also appreciate the thoughtful comments. I hope the software companies are paying attention.
I’m only going to be using my iPad for note taking (idk why it feels weird to use it for anything else as an iPad feels too big for me), it’ll be great to have all my notes on me at once instead of having multiple notebooks!
at first, I didn't like Notability, so I used mostly Goodnotes but in the past few months I went back to Notability something about it is a lot smoother and intuitive than the Goodnotes (though they are very similar) I just wish Notability would add more paper options and the special features Goodnotes has
How is the handwriting experience on Goodnotes?? Does it auto smoothens your handwriting? With notability I get a lot of jitter in my handwritten letters as I type slow. GN smoothens out the handwriting like Apple notes does (this setting is called streamline which is available in procreate with a setting to adjust)
I love them both Notability for the simplicity of writing notes or jolt down some quick notes also love the continuous page creation and GoodNotes 5 for just overall note taking and organization but only thing I would say I dislike is that you have to hold to create pages not like notability where it automatically makes another page for you.
Kind of want GoodNotes to add gifs as one of my personal notebooks in it, I add doodles and small animation gifs that I’ve made as a “doodle of the day”, and I’d like my animations to actually work. XD I love GoodNotes, though.
Goodnotes! I started to use notability last week. I like the voice recording function but the rest of it is a bit inconvenient to use for me compared to goodnotes.
My son, a freshman at UCSB decided to go with Good Notes. But i am using Notablity since my assistant is using it and so he can be my on the spot tech support buddy. Whatever works!
For my country we are going back to online school because of COVID cases and I’m starting high school soon so I’m trying to decide on which app I want so I can’t take digital notes cause we use our iPads to study and so far I really like your video after watching a ton of comparison videos I’ve decided I’m just going to use good notes 5 I’m just going to screen record for my studies with the mic on
i chose goodnotes because it’s a lot cheaper and there’s no additional in-app purchases or subscriptions… i’d rather do a one-time purchase of $7.99 with goodnotes than have to pay $11.99 yearly for the notability subscription. i love the recording feature on notability but my teachers don’t allow me to record them during lectures. also i prefer the aesthetic of goodnotes over than notability and the fact that you have so many notebook covers to choose from. but of course, people have different preferences, so if you feel notability suits your needs best then i’d say go for it because neither are bad apps for note taking 😁
been using goodnotes for months now and started trying notability a few weeks ago. I noticed how it's easier and smoother to write on Notability! Idk if it's just me, but writing is seamless on notability. right now, I use both - one for personal and one for work
I use both! I have Goodnotes for my textbooks then import chapters to Notability where I annotate them. After 2 years of using both, Notability’s writing experience is just far better compared to Goodnotes but I can’t use Notability fully because it doesn’t have the thumbnails view that Goodnotes offers. Notability also has the option to change pens, eraser tool, and lasso tool on its zoom window which is super convenient (Goodnotes 4 had this but idk why they removed it). Also the favorite pens/highlighters make annotating a faster experience vs Goodnotes! In general: Goodnotes: textbooks, planner, annotate pictures, etc. Notability: annotate pdfs, write notes... I basically use it like I would use a notebook So if you’re textbook heavy and don’t mind the less delightful writing experience, go for Goodnotes. If you’re into something more straight to the point, go for Notability. ☺️
@@vane5970 yes, you can! but it doesn’t offer the thumbnails & outline view (where it’s like a table of contents and you can jump to the chapter that you want; some books have this others don’t) that Goodnotes has which makes it easier to navigate thousands of pages. In Notability, you can only scroll through the pages at the side and maybe jump to pages like the adobe pdf reader.

honestly? the recording feature on notability has been a live savior for me. Sometimes my professors explain too fast and I don't have time to write everything down, so it makes things a lot easier for me.
I've had both. Eventhough I tried loving goodnotes due to all the extra features it has... It just can't beat not ability. I feel like it is more intuitive for me who takes occasional note and needing to edit a lot of files. I Aam still using both. But I find that whenever I used goodnotes it was because I feel bad for not using it after spending money. Whereas when I do use notability I feel literal joy of note taking and file editing. Not to mention love the easy file navigation on the left which makes finding the the right note easy.
i used to only use goodnotes, but i am starting to switch to notability! i like the dark mode, and the simplicity. i also think my handwriting looks better on it haha. great video!! :)
@@dozziamantock8243 Paperlike or matter screen protectors sort of ruin the display and viewing experience, plus I guess they also degrade your apple pencil tips. For me, display is wayyyy too important and I just can't get a matte screen protector. So a tempered glass one just works just fine. However, matte screen protectors do give you a nice drawing and writing experience (varies from person to person) and are anti-reflective. Just wanted to get the information out :)))) so people can decide for themselves
I just want some paper and some colors to highlight I usually write my notes in my notebook and use so many markers 😔 getting an iPad should be easier Week later: I got good notes lmao

been switching between both for years. Unsure why notability does not implement the great advance feature from goodnotes in zoom mode. also, both apps need a one click camera button which automatically ends up in crop mode. (lecture notes when taking pictures of slides)… great video!
I’m thinking of getting one of these and was swaying towards notability but lots of comments say good notes which is good because it is slightly cheaper
Goodnotes 5 seems to be better for personalizing and making it fit my interests, which will help me feel more comfortable with writing my notes, especially since digital note taking is new to me
This video was very helpful, thank you! I think I’m gonna purchase goodnotes over notability. Really wanted notability for that audio recording but hopefully goodnotes will be updated with audio recording in the future.
Thank you so much I am interested in making the switch to digital, since I am feeling overwhelmed by the clutter building in my home. I have been trying to educate myself on this. 😊
I have both Goodnotes 5 and Noteability, I value both for what each one does and find myself switching between both of them depending on what I'm doing
Thank you so much for this. It was super helpful for me. I’m leaning towards good notes right now because I’m looking for a place to do planning and journaling
I’m a long-time Notability fan but I’m eying Goodnotes for a digital planner because it seems more like a paper planner. Tried a planner on Notability but it just felt too disjointed. Thanks for your review!
Literally me too right now. I tried planners from Etsy and from the new store in Notability and....yeah. I loved Notability so much though. I do hope that GoodNotes adds the audio recording feature to work the same way it did in Notability but I might also try the app she mentioned that automatically writes a transcript of the audio.
I started with good notes but now i am using notability. I find my handwriting when i write down notes in real time, is much better on notability while good notes is better when u take the time to make the handwriting look pretty.

@@heinekhalwin8735 great. So do you like that? Or do you prefer notability? For me I got a lot of jitters and pixelated handwriting I mean the slanting lines are jagged
@@SiddarthMalik I really prefer notability man. For me it's really close to my handwriting in real life. Also, I have a matte screen protector, so it feels like writing on paper. For me goodnotes is really smooth and my handwriting is already weird, it makes it even more weird.
I currently use notability, but don’t like that I can not have subfolders within a main folder. Not sure if good notes does this, but I think I’m going to give it a try.
Downside to Goodnotes after using it for almost a year is they have so few types of pens and pencils for writing, and they dont have the auto adjust feature that procreate has that helps neaten your handwriting. Again, comparing it to procreate, but it is not difficult to add different types of pens and add the writing neatening feature. They've also been 'developing' new pens and pencils since 2016.
Procreate is an art app, so a very different ballpark than GoodNotes. But GoodNotes does have the auto perfect tool! You can draw straight lines and shapes as you can in procreate. It also has the same undo and redo gestures as well.
KDigital - have you ever reviewed liquid text? I agree with Mark A's reasoning reg. price point vs productivity, but liquid text jumps to $30 USD or more and the trial is watered down. The intended use would be grading papers.
Thank you so much for this side by side comparison layout of this video, this has made comparison and choice so much more informative and a lot less anecdotal! Thank you!
I have both apps and i use them both. But I definitely prefer goodnotes a lot more and I do use it much more often as well. I just personally prefer goodnote's overall presentation and just that feeling when using the app(omg does that even make sense?😭✋)
The ability to recording is that keeps me from leaving notability. It makes a lot easier for me to have all in one document - text and listening. I use notability all the time and almost never GoodNotes.
You are GOOD at this!!! Keep up the good work. Loved it. It was very intelligently quick but didn't feel like you were missing much important stuff at all....if anything.
The problem I have with goodnotes is the limited 3 quick access pens. When I take notes, I use way more than 3 colors, so it's annoying to always have to make 3 more clicks during lectures. Also, I havent found a way to make shapes by only dragging + scaling (not drawing and holding).
Hello wow just wow such a talent you have. I had a question for you. Will you by chance have a 2022 June /July start to 2023 version available? I want to make the switch now 😂

been using goodnotes for months now and started trying notability a few weeks ago. I noticed how it's easier and smoother to write on Notability! Idk if it's just me, but writing is seamless on notability. right now, I use both - one for personal and one for work
Two minutes in I decided to use Goodnotes! Thank you for the thorough video!
thats because she's framing the video
In general:
Goodnotes: textbooks, planner, annotate pictures, etc.
Notability: annotate pdfs, write notes... I basically use it like I would use a notebook
So if you’re textbook heavy and don’t mind the less delightful writing experience, go for Goodnotes. If you’re into something more straight to the point, go for Notability. ☺️
Are you able to export notes between the 2 apps?
@@a.3693 yes! It’s pretty seamless actually ☺️
can you export textbooks on notability too?
@@vane5970 yes, you can! but it doesn’t offer the thumbnails & outline view (where it’s like a table of contents and you can jump to the chapter that you want; some books have this others don’t) that Goodnotes has which makes it easier to navigate thousands of pages. In Notability, you can only scroll through the pages at the side and maybe jump to pages like the adobe pdf reader.
hey can u sell me notability using family sharing ican pay u
So thati can get the app at a fair price
Both of us get benefited u can share up to 6 people and get your full.paid amount back u can also purchase good notes if u want with thsat money
There are many like me searching all over the internet to get these app at lower price
So it wont be difficulty to find others
Incase u dont know in appstore purchase a majority of them can be shared with atleast 6 members
honestly? the recording feature on notability has been a live savior for me. Sometimes my professors explain too fast and I don't have time to write everything down, so it makes things a lot easier for me.
I use both, but notability is better for marking up Ebooks and lecture notes, good notes is better for hand written notes.
I feel like notability is really good for teachers and goodnotes is really good for students.
i used to only use goodnotes, but i am starting to switch to notability! i like the dark mode, and the simplicity. i also think my handwriting looks better on it haha. great video!! :)
hi which screen protector do you use?
@@kmhak if you’re looking for recommendations, try paperlike screen protector
I have to say the simplicity is a must for me too, as well as the dark mode.
I just want some paper and some colors to highlight I usually write my notes in my notebook and use so many markers 😔 getting an iPad should be easier
Week later: I got good notes lmao
I have both and honestly I like good notes better~ the customization is just so much better and it feels a lot more functional than notability in my opinion~ great and concise video!
Thank you!!
How is the handwriting experience on Goodnotes?? Does it auto smoothens your handwriting? With notability I get a lot of jitter in my handwritten letters as I type slow. GN smoothens out the handwriting like Apple notes does (this setting is called streamline which is available in procreate with a setting to adjust)
been switching between both for years. Unsure why notability does not implement the great advance feature from goodnotes in zoom mode. also, both apps need a one click camera button which automatically ends up in crop mode. (lecture notes when taking pictures of slides)… great video!
For college notes I used notability. Now as a music teacher I use GoodNotes
Did it work? Does your music sound better with good notes? 🥸😉
@@Prof.SchulzeSternberg LOL
I got Notability because of the recording feature, and have never used it. I like Goodnotes much better
really need to hear this... look like goodnotes it is then
I’m thinking of getting one of these and was swaying towards notability but lots of comments say good notes which is good because it is slightly cheaper
Rn notability has some sorta sale ( just in case u didn’t choose yet & didnt know ;))
Goodnotes 5 seems to be better for personalizing and making it fit my interests, which will help me feel more comfortable with writing my notes, especially since digital note taking is new to me
Is there a way to have date at the top of each GoodNotes page? I want to be able to search notes by date.
I feel like I don’t even have to watch another comparison video after this one and this is the first video I viewed! Great video. Thank you.
I have both and let me tell you that GoodNotes is by far way better in my opinion, I feel more organized when using this app
This is a brilliant and thorough review, thank you! Wish all reviews were done like this
Going with Goodnotes just because of the versatility of the app. Your video finally helped me make the decision between both. Thank you
i havent tried notability yet but i can really say that so far, goodnotes is soooo great
This video was very helpful, thank you! I think I’m gonna purchase goodnotes over notability. Really wanted notability for that audio recording but hopefully goodnotes will be updated with audio recording in the future.
Do you know when the update will happen?
Thank you for this video! I havent used notability yet but I am 100% in love with good notes and love using it
I feel like Notability used to be the better app, but GoodNotes recently surpassed it.
I’m going with good notes thanks to this video.
Thank youu, I was debating which one to buy and decided on good notes, it’s great
I have both notability and GoodNotes but for me GoodNotes is the best . Love your video❤️
Thanks for sharing!!
SInce I watched the comments, I am confused to choose notability or good notes hahah
This was such an informative and well prepared video. Thank you a lot!
Team Notability... but honestly both are SO good
This video was so helpful in getting good notes thank you!
I think goodnotes would work better for me, I literally bought it as I neared the end of the video since I was trying to make the decision today lol
Happy to help :)
Thank you so much for this. It was super helpful for me. I’m leaning towards good notes right now because I’m looking for a place to do planning and journaling
Hi! Have you or anyone any thoughts on battery life differences between both apps?
BEST COMPARISON FOR THESE TWO APPS. KUDOS! ❤
Great job explaining and showing in detail the difference between the two, thanks to you and this video I think I'm going to go with good notes!!!!😁😃
I love your videos 💕
I’m team GoodNotes because I like customizing my notes as much as possible
@@SiddarthMalik yes it does smoothen my handwriting
@@heinekhalwin8735 great. So do you like that? Or do you prefer notability? For me I got a lot of jitters and pixelated handwriting I mean the slanting lines are jagged
@@SiddarthMalik I really prefer notability man. For me it's really close to my handwriting in real life. Also, I have a matte screen protector, so it feels like writing on paper. For me goodnotes is really smooth and my handwriting is already weird, it makes it even more weird.
@@heinekhalwin8735 great. Just one last question. How do you like Applenotes handwriting., how different from notability
Thanks for this video! I just downloaded Goodnotes. I’m gonna use the printables I made in Goodnotes.
I currently use notability, but don’t like that I can not have subfolders within a main folder. Not sure if good notes does this, but I think I’m going to give it a try.
GoodNotes does! It’s such an important feature for me :)
This was really helpful as I just got my new ipad ! Thanks !
Haha same
..very nice comparison of features, side by side. thanks for putting it together!
KDigital - have you ever reviewed liquid text? I agree with Mark A's reasoning reg. price point vs productivity, but liquid text jumps to $30 USD or more and the trial is watered down. The intended use would be grading papers.
After years, great video! 👍🏻👍🏻
GoodNotes. I don’t have Notability and this video makes me wanna stick to GoodNotes
Thank you so much, you really help me decide for Goodnotes, great video.
You are GOOD at this!!! Keep up the good work. Loved it. It was very intelligently quick but didn't feel like you were missing much important stuff at all....if anything.
Thank you for another helpful video . Congrats for 37.4K subs . I am so glad I found your channel
Thank you, lovely ❤️
The problem I have with goodnotes is the limited 3 quick access pens. When I take notes, I use way more than 3 colors, so it's annoying to always have to make 3 more clicks during lectures. Also, I havent found a way to make shapes by only dragging + scaling (not drawing and holding).
After drawing the shape or line, just tap it and it will allow you to drag and scale!
now to me its not a question goodnotes is for a few bucks while notability is a subscription
Hello wow just wow such a talent you have. I had a question for you. Will you by chance have a 2022 June /July start to 2023 version available? I want to make the switch now 😂
are we able to insert and edit any pdf files in Goodnotes? Thank you in advance. Keep going with your videos, so helpful
Yes you can I just download it and you can
GOODNOTES ❣️
I bought good notes today amazing all why did I not use it before
I love your hand spots, it's really cute 😉
Exactly the type of review I needed! Thank you so much for doing this. Good Notes for me ☺️👍
