I had asked you for a tutorial on these LGB journals when I signed up for the freebie. Then I found you’ve already done it! I should have known - you are so generous to share everything. As I watched this I noticed that you said the spine cover is a little ragged at the bottom of the spine. I’m wondering if you couldn’t start the fabric spine wrap in the middle of the inside of the spine, wrap it over the top and around the outside of the spine, wrap it around the bottom of the spine, and then finish it back in the middle of the inside spine. That way, the two ends of the fabric would meet inside the book spine and be eventually hidden by the signatures and neither the top or bottom of the spine would be ragged. (Was that clear as mud? Ha)
Genius, Sally! Yes, absolutely! Mind if I steal that little idea? 😄. I love it! We can always learn from each other. Thanks so much for your comment and great idea! ❤️
These are beautiful and as a Little Golden Book collector (I have over 250) I managed to watch without too much cringing since the one you used had a bar code. :) I actually have some newer copies that I'd love use for this. Thank you for sharing! I do hope that anyone that wants to do this will check to make sure that their book isn't one of the rarer ones before they rip it up. Some of us have been searching for those for years, but as they say "the early bird gets the worm". I love your work Gayle and really appreciate that you share it with us.
This. Thank you so much! I love that you are so concise and explain everything, you answer my questions before I even finish the thought! You make perfect sense. Awesome video!!
I have that exact same little golden book from when i was a kid! This is a great idea! I am going to try it with some old books. Thank you for sharing!
Hello, my name is Cheryl. As soon as my health improves I'll be taking the plunge. I'm certain you will do a fantastic job. You sound a bit nervous, but just get what you need to create what's to be amazing no matter what you need to create your journal. I put all materials in a plastic , 12x12 project box. ( Plastic) This helps me be very organized. My nails filed, (ok bitten off) I'm human😱 lol. Then, when I'm ready, I will watch what is the "video again." Next, I follow along with her and having what I and my husband believe To Be hysterical, ( you might need to watch those 2x before you follow along. Oh dear is she ever funny. She truly is most amazing JOY filled woman I've never met in my life. I really do appreciate her for sharing 365 videos a year. Oops, almost forgot. I've already asked God for forgiveness for being jealous of her PILES of Ephemera "at the ready" Happyscrappy45, you will be in the best of care with sweet Gayle. The best comedian EVER. God Bless🙋♀️
Gayle, Just subscribed via Diane H's channel and your vintage fabric project. What a great idea. Will be binge watching you today for more inspiration, ideas and tips. Thank you for taking the time to show us more about journaling. Nancy O
Thank you so much. I new to making journaling. I’m using leftover fabrics. Your video helped tremendously. I’m going to attempt making a small book for my great granddaughter. She will be turning one in February and i thought it would be nice to make something she will have for years. Thanks again. I will be watching much more of you👏🏻🤗
Oh, Donna, how fun to make your sweet grand baby a journal! She will look at it over and over again! I've made some for my granddaughters, who are older, and they do so love them. Sure makes a Nana's heart feel good!! Thanks so much for watching! ❤️
Eloise Wilkin GBs are my absolute favorite! I am SO going to make a journal with one. On my short list. Thank you for sharing your process. I wondered what you used for the spine. I have used boxes in the past, but they were a bit thin and did not seem sturdy enough to suit me. I know it isn't rocket science, but it is always helpful for me to see what others use...and what works for them! Blessings on you, Gayle!
Thanks Gayle You make it so easy to understand. I'm making a personal journal and decided I want to put fabric and lace over the covers. I will find something similar to your glue here is Aus ❤
Thank you so much for sharing this. I've been wondering how to do the spine and wanted to make one of these for ages. Now I'll be able to give it a go. Just got to get some fabric.
Thank you so much foe this video ..amd yes this is what o was looking ..foe..you answer all my questiona..thank you so much..much 👌👌👌👌💗🤍🤍🤍🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍂🍁🍁..have a beautiful day day..🙏..🙋🏻♀️🌻
Thank you so so much, I messed up a book spine and have been on the hunt for an easy, quick way to still use the covers without needing specialty things!!! Definitely going to be a new subscriber!!!
Thanks so much for doing this tutorial so quickly. I was surprised that you didn't need to use anything under the fabric to reinforce it for strength. I had thought that there would have been an extra layer because of all the opening and closing of the cover. Again thank-you.
This was one of my daughters and my granddaughters favorite books. I thought you had to use tyvek too so this really was a good video for me to choose to watch thanks for sharing Gayle love all you do 🥰🐞😍
Thank you for sharing this tut with us, Gayle! You're so encouraging and make it look so easy. I will definitely be on the lookout for Little Golden Books now!! :) Big Hugs to you! xo
thanks Gayle for the tutorial...!!! I am squeemish but then I get over it when I see the final results...I had that book for my girls when they were little.
Awesome tutorial Gayle! The only thing that confused me is that I didn’t see you leave a tiny gap. I know that when I learned how to make mini books they always stressed the gap but maybe that was because we were using designer series paper.anywho I appreciate you taking time out of your day to show us how you do it...Do I dare say that I spied my favorite Eloise Wilkins book ever and the binding material that you choose is perfect! Giant hugs, Candi
I do mine the same way although I haven't done one in a really long time lol I have been making Fabric Books lately lol - Thanks for sharing and reminding me lol oxoxoxo God Bless, rosanne
Thanks Debbie! They are so fun to match colors with...so whimsical. I have no doubt if you try them, you'll make amazing ones...just like everything you do! Thanks for watching! ❤️
Thank you SO MUCH!!! Seeing how you” deconstruct” Golden Books will save me hours of time. I was cutting off the covers with a craft knife and ruler. I just tried your method and in 30 seconds the cover was ready to trim. Love the fabric spines. Do you think recycled khaki fabric would be too thick?
Thank you for this tutorial-now I’m lamenting recently giving away the Goldenbooks that our kids had outgrown. 😄I guess i can’t ask my grandkids to give them back...😆
Thank you! Awesome binding and i would love to try...but i too am confused about the gap. It looked like you didnt and i would love that. Its what has held me back from trying one. Please verify that you dont have to leave a gap.. Maybe because the cloth has more give than paper?. Thanks so much for all your lovely videos.
Hi sweetie! I don't leave a gap. I just put the covers up next to the spine chipboard and glue away! It seems to give enough room to fold. My suggestion would be to try it on a book that you're not to attached to...a practice run will tell you everything you need to know. A little secret....these are the first ones I've ever done. I just jumped in! If I can do it, you can do it! Let me know how it turns out! ❤️
Hey, Gail. Do you have a video of how you assembled the pages that you put into this particular book? I want to make one but I'm confused how you kept the pages in order as well as adding additional pages. I love watching you work and you seem to be such a sweet and caring person.
The5blessings There is another one of my videos where I sew in the signatures. I think it's called Sewing Buttons on the Spine or something like that. ❤️
Thank you for your tutorial! It's really inspiring! The fabric you chose looks really nice with the picture on the book cover! I'm just wondering whether the fabric is strong enough to hold the covers together coz you only sticked a small margin of the fabric onto the covers so as not to cover up the pictures too much. Maybe I'm worrying too much coz I'm always worrying about the endurance of the spine lol
Louisa, I think since the fabric wraps all the way around the spine, it's doubly adhered, if that makes sense. I think with all of the journals folks make, they need to be treated with gentle hands. If you think about it, anything handmade can be compromised with rough treatment from quilts to handbags to clothing. All that to say, I believe the fabric spines will hold up with time and for the purpose intended. Thanks so much for watching and taking time to comment! ❤️
This is where I am. 4 weeks!!! Being unwell for a year has had its perks! . That's just wrong, Being so unwell has been a killer. However, I have full file folders of ideas. And it's restoring. Although yesterday, I got more blood tests the took a ride to the harbor.3 hour spent walking seriously about killed me.
Thank you for sharing !!!! Your works are beautifully designed. I'm a new subie. Have you done a video on then attaching your signatures to the spine? Thank you again.♥️♥️♥️♥️
Welcome to my channel, Linda! I do have a tutorial on sewing in the signatures with buttons on the spine. It is named Tutorial-How to Sew Buttons on the Spine. Hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! I'm feeling the call to do more tutorials, so stay tuned! 😄❤️
Do you sew all the story pages back into the book, along with the other papers, or do you just put some of the story into the journal? These are so sweet!
Hey Gayle!! I have tried using this method several times over the years. Everytime I do it, I have glue spots showing thru the fabric. What am I doing wrong?? Lol When I use upholstery fabric I'm fine. Anything else tho & there's big dark spots showing thru😱. I use fabri-tac also. Do I need to thin it out or something? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Sorry for the late response, Alisha. I don’t know why YT notifies of some comments but not all. You could try spreading the glue out with a credit card before putting the fabric down. That might eliminate your glue glops! ❤️
O I love this way of making and covering the spine. !!!!! When are you gonna put these in your store ? Thanks so much for doing these tutorials !!!! Are you gonna be doing more, such as pockets, and how you cut down your pages. Really enjoyed this !!!!!! O, one more thing. How do you sew in the pages of the golden books since they are not 8 1/2 x 11 to just fold down middle? Thanks again for sharing this !!!!!! Your awesome !!!
Hi Jana! I'm going to list these in the store tomorrow. So the pages...yes, they are longer than the cover of the book. So I leave them as they are (still connected in the middle of the two pages) and incorporate them as is in the signature then fold the edges. I think if you dive in and try one, you'll see what I mean. 😄. Oh gosh, I can't remember your other questions, so you may get another message here. 😜😂. Thanks for watching friend!! ❤️
Jana Williams okay so I guess I answered your questions! 😄. I'm going to posts a video flip through of the journals and will list them in Etsy at the same time tomorrow. ❤️
Gayle Ihave this same book and i want to make a journal out of it but is it ok because of the copy write. My book is 1970 something is it not suppose to be the year in the 1920 something to make it leagel to use it . I just don't want to get in trouble. Thanks for sharing.
Joyce, as I've said to others...I'm not a lawyer. I can't speak to the copyright laws. But her are my thoughts...there are many seller on Etsy, in thrift stores etc that sell LGB. We alter them, then sell them. I don't see much difference. I don't claim the story or the illustrations as my own and always give credit to LGB. So I feel fine doing these books. But as I've always said, you need to follow your own conscience. ❤️
Thank you so much for this one! I've seen people showing their Little Golden books remakes, but I never knew how it's done! This is great!

have been looking in uk for the little golden books, they are really cute! love your work, you make it look so simple :)
Jill, I think it would work just fine! ❤️
Thank you for this tutorial-now I’m lamenting recently giving away the Goldenbooks that our kids had outgrown. 😄I guess i can’t ask my grandkids to give them back...😆
Gail’s Bookish Things Now you'll be trolling the thrift stores looking for more!! Thanks for watching!! ❤️
Gayle Agostinelli yes i will!
Thank you! Awesome binding and i would love to try...but i too am confused about the gap. It looked like you didnt and i would love that. Its what has held me back from trying one. Thank you, so much, Gayle! I am for sure going to try this & I will let you know!
Thank you. It was very helpful.
Great tutorial! Very helpful! TFS, Gayle!
Hello, would the glue hold a thin leather backing instead of fabric? I will look, but have you made a book spine with leather?
Hey, Gail. Do you have a video of how you assembled the pages that you put into this particular book? I want to make one but I'm confused how you kept the pages in order as well as adding additional pages. I love watching you work and you seem to be such a sweet and caring person.
I've had a few people ask for a video on keeping the pages in order. I'll do one soon! Thanks so much for watching! ❤️
Very good tutorial, Thank you and God bless.
Thank you for sharing. I have been wondering how to do a fabric spine when you only have the clovers.
Thank you Gayle.
Great tutorial! How do you then attach the signatures to the spine?
The5blessings There is another one of my videos where I sew in the signatures. I think it's called Sewing Buttons on the Spine or something like that. ❤️
Helped me alot! Thank you
Dec17, 2018 and I just sewed in 2 signatures to my Ireland book. Yeah Me. !!!
Good work, Pat!! ❤️

My pleasure , Bonnie! Thanks for watching! ❤️
Wonderful tutorial!!
Thanks friend! 😘❤️
Ty so much for sharing just adore you
You're so sweet Dawn! Sending adoration right back to you!! 😘😘❤️
You are so good! Thank you for sharing! Question: do you use fray check on the edge of the fabric? Or is the glue enough?
crystal13l I don't use fray check. The FabriTac does seem to be enough to hold things in place. 😄❤️
Is there help somewhere with the signatures? How do you put in the Little Golden Book pages themselves? I love your videos!
Donna Levi I do have a video on Sewing in the signatures. It’s close to this one on my channel. ❤️
Thank you for sharing !!!!
Your works are beautifully designed.

Thank you! Nice tutorial! Don’t you have to leave a bit of a gap between the chipboard pieces so it opens and closes properly?
I don't leave a gap, Susan. As you saw, I put them right next to each other. The fabric has enough give to fold just fine. ❤️
Ok thanks!
Do you sew all the story pages back into the book, along with the other papers, or do you just put some of the story into the journal? These are so sweet!

Hi. I was following your tutorial. I used Muslim instead of a printed fabric. The fabric tac showed through. Any suggestions on how to fix it?
Maybe put a layer of lace over top? ❤️
Ingenious!!!
