That Hosta was very pot bound. Some people say teasing the roots out isn't necessary however as a long time gardener I do it. I have moved things that I believed were dying due to not being happy in the spot only to find out they were strangling themselves with roots that never stopped growing in the shape of the pot. Annuals don't matter so much and some perennials will straighten themselves out but I would not leave roots growing in a circle, they want to reach out and down.
