    Using graded oil for lubricating chains is a very old technique and is successful for years. Actually present generation boys follows few vloggers who r sponsored by companies like motul etc etc who promotes those companies product by using their products on screen during their tour like leh ladakh and others showing if by using those products they have trouble free journey but parallely those products r very very expensive also

    My bro finger also went inside the sprocket. When he was lubing the chain with oil (engine started) oil start to drop from chain then he put clothes on there. in a second clothes traped in the chain and the chain pull the clothes and his 1 finger go through the sprocket and his finger cruched and blood spreaded around his face. Now his finger only 90%. He doing that every month and also he have experience. Guys don't ever do this in engine on even if you have experience. Do it manually.

    I recently bought gear oil to lubricate the chain on my classic 350 only because chain spray is not available in this small town I'm at. Pleasantly surprised to see the smooth results..and had been wondering why everyone is not doing this in the first place.. Better than the expensive chain spray in my opinion.

    • @nirupam683

      @@nirupam683 yes you're right but when you know just how much oil to use, it is as good as any other sticky lubricant. Also you'd have to apply more often than chain spray but I noticed it helps keep chain cleaner.

    90 grade oil will throw and splash on your pant, oil will always attract too much of muck and dust. Always use a chain cleaner spray and after it dries then spray Chain lube and wait for 10 minutes before you strat riding. ( Chain spray only for "O"ring chain, with out chain guard)

    90 w gear oil is best for bike chains. Gear oils are traditionally used in gear box to lubricate the chains inside gear box, similar to the wheel chains. Its prevents any sticky or dirty chains.

  • @ijs_automotive
    @ijs_automotive 6 років тому +223

    All good , kero and diesel are the best and the safest thing for the chain, been using it since a long time. And the gear oil is also better then any chain spry lube it stick for a longer time and provide best rust protection.
    But please don't start your engine while working on chain , there have been countless number of fingers and thumbs which have been lost due to this. It takes only slight bit longer to lube it with engine off.
    One more tip, i use ep140 for summers and ep 90 for winters as ep 140 has thicker in kinematic viscosity so it bears the heat better then ep90. Try it and you will feel a difference. Gear oil is the best and oldest thing to lube a chain. I have been doing this since a very long time. And target the o rings on both sides not just the rollers one round each on both sides orings and one quick round on the rollers with engine off, all it take less the 2 minutes.
    And for those saying kero will eat and destroy the oring , no it will not as both kero and diesel are oil based and good for rubber rings companies like suzuki have mentioned using kero/diesel in the manual of their bigger bikes.
    Be safe ride well.

    Whichever companies chain lube you are using
    whether you are doing normal / over lubing.....
    No good for the chain especially if you are daily using the bike.
    It will affect the life span of the chain or you have to lubricate every 200 to 300 kms.
    If you are living in a rainy area , further worsens the longevity of chain.
    Use diesel to clean the chain with an old tooth brush thoroughly. ( Front , Back & both Sides of chain )
    I recommend a thicker gear oil say 140 grade to lubricate the chain because the oil content the chain last longer days when compared to 90 grade gear oil.
    ( From my personal experience )
    Let me say , 90 grade gear oil is NOT A BAD LUBRICANT for the chain.

    Excellent, I had also been used chain lube, later swiched to ususal engine oil 20w40 . But it is far superior to use Gear oil 90 as the viscosity is high. But note, kerosine washing suggestion for chain is not good, after washing and even after lubed chain, it mskes irritating new sounds. Washing chain in diesel is slightly good than kerosin.

    OMG. Please don't let the kerosene dry out on the chain. It will leave a residue that's so hard to remove. As soon as you're finished using kerosene rinse it with running water immediately. A hose with a water sprayer us much better. Your chain will be shiny and clean after hosing it with water. Dry it out with a rag then apply chain lube.

    Too much discussion, but my Hero Honda passion plus of 2008 completed 70000 km today so just wanted to take care of bike so searching videos. But what I found is hilarious. I myself never clean or lubricate or adjust the tension of my chain but every service interval (2500 km) mechanic does it. Every time I wash my bike once in 2-3 months I go to mechanic and ask to lube wherever and whichever parts needed it just for 10-20 Rs and in these 10 years and 70k km running neither chain nor sprockets are changed. There is no noise, no rust.
    So shall I be more cautious and take care of my bike or will it be good idea to leave it on mechanic as I am doing this for 10 years.

    Okay it’s a good one the gear oil stuff. But try to avoid gear oil in rainy season or don’t use excessive . The oil is quite thin and get easily mixed with the rain water while running in chain sprocket. This further leads to the oil all over your back tyre on the road too. Whatever it is it sticks to your tyre further making your bike wobble from back side.

    Chain lube is totally different from that gear oil. I used both. In chain lube the fluid enters most of the parts and applys evenly but this cant be done in gear oil. Waxpol lube is by far the best in lube that i have used. If used both than chain will last longer. Mine is now running 27k km and still perfect in the most rainy region of india (?). In rain nothing is better than the gear oil as the cost is very low and can be carried easily on a bottle.

    I agree with u. I just bought my royal Enfield 3 mobths back and have crossed over 7k km . I have been using these lubes. Like kangarro. But i cant see the smoothness. And it do not spread to the whole chain and do not go deep into the chain links. Plus cleaning is a hsrd job. As its too sticky . I too am thinking to roll over to gear oil soon. 🤔

    Very useful info. Gear oil is the best to lube the drive chain. It last much longer especially during the rains and is quite cost effective.
    I personally use diesel to clean up the chain. Its not as good as kerosene being a little thicker but in Goa Kerosene is not easily available so diesel is our best bet here.

  • @That.Hornet.Redliner
    @That.Hornet.Redliner 2 роки тому +3

    i started using diesel to clean the chain as after various research and all I got to know that kerosene is a bit harsh to o rings but not as much as petrol, on the other hand diesel is the best of all. sometimes I use engine oil(not used) to lube and they work the best. Good information provided in the video,keep it up.

  • @hillie47
    @hillie47 5 років тому +3

    Be careful with O/X/Z-ring chains and kerosene. A recent video by Fortnine on chain cleaners showed that kerosene is indeed affordable and cleans really well, but penetrates past the rings tremendously. That's not good, as it would dissolve the factory lubrication that the O-rings are supposed to keep in. Another well-known cleaner, Simple Green, cleans roughly as well, is cheap and another benefit of it compared to kerosene is that it's not flammable and doesn't smell. It's readily available in the US and Canada (I think), but I'm not sure about other parts of the world.
    Great video otherwise! I've been looking at various products, but keep coming back to simple old-school gear oil as it's easy to find, affordable and still seems better than anything else.

    Just FYI and money saving: I have yamaha fz 2009 and changed my chain set after 22500 kms. I went to showroom first to get estimate for same which was given Rs 3500 appx. As most companies uses Rolon or D.I.D chains and I inquired from market and both were readily available in around 950 bucks (complete chain set) . I opted for D.I.D chain set and paid Rs 100 for labour and whole chain set change costs me around 1050 bucks. Same applies to chain clean and lubing. Clean with kerosene and lube with SAE 90 or 120 lube oil. Ordered half litre gulfstar lube oil from amazon which costed around 115 bucks and due to small quantity needed to be applied I think I can manage 3-4 yrs with same oil. For bike wash I prefer to wash it at home only for sole purpose of satisfaction . Use black sunsilk pouch which car washers and bike washers use.

Since, a mechanic suggested me and guess what... I won't say it restored my old chain but the gear oil far better then anything else.. The dirt that stick due to my previous chain lube used to be hard when its get dry but now at least when the dirt do attach they come up easily and the sound of my chain has been reduced drastically ? I must tell you GEAR OIL are good even better in some case cuz if you don't clean properly and then use chain lube and that too on rainy days and dirt roads it only going to ruin you chain and both of the sprockets.
