- Chromecast with Google TV is one of those things that’s just been … around … for what seems like forever. And now it’s been replaced by the Walmart Onn 4K Pro Streaming Device.

Yes, really. Chromecast with Google TV is actually closing in on its fourth birthday, and it’s never really had much competition, especially when it comes to price. But Walmart just ended that with the Onn 4K Pro Streaming Device.
That’s a bad name for what basically is a Walmart-branded Chromecast. But the name on the box is the only place you’ll actually see any Walmart creep happening. Boot it up, and you’ll feel like you’re using a Chromecast - only this one lacks the lag that we’ve had to put up with for years in Google’s hardware. And what’s more is that Onn’s has a built-in speaker and microphone array, which basically makes it a Google TV version of the Amazon Fire TV Cube, and at less than half the price.
So we’re in a pretty intriguing place. Google shows no signs of replacing the Chromecast anytime soon. Walmart has something with an even better experience, for just $50. The only hard part is being able to find one, as it’s sold out pretty quickly.

How long until walmart flips that advertisement switch...
Yes. I would want to know what the privacy policy is on this and if there is an opted out for any tracking.
@@bhgeminiYou can install a launcher over it
That's my fear.
@@bhgeminiI touched on this in the written review and a little here. There’s no visible anything from Walmart. Not TOS. No nothing. Looks and feels completely stock. Nvidia Shield has more cruft than this.
@@PhilNickinson I am pretty sure this is an actual Google brand device rebadged for WM. Every house brand piece of electronics is always a major brand behind it. They launched this at WM as a test bed device for a combo Google tv + Home.
Phil Nickinson is a straight OG in the android game. Glad to see him on this channel even tho it's only every once in a while. Good video!
Great video! Definitely want to get one of these. The lack of ads is a big reason, especially since Roku is putting video ads into its UI, so I think I'll be tossing my Roku overboard now.
Is Walmart putting this on sale for memorial weekend? And, I DEF want the updated remote. Love backlighting! 😎
Got the $20 4k box (no ethernet or usb-a), and it runs pretty dang well. The addition of usb means it could possibly make a good Retro Arch console.
Phil! Good to see you back.
Question on not opting into the Google Assistant features on this Onn 4k Pro. I have the classic GCCTV 4k and when I disable the Google Assistant feature and use the Apps Only mode I get spammed in the middle of watching something that pauses my video saying something to the effect of "Google Assistant is not enabled". It's like it randomly thinks I'm trying to use the Google Assistant features even though I'm not doing anything other than watching something. It's super annoying happens almost every day at some point. I'm wondering if you have ever seen that since you are experienced reviewer of all things Google TV.
Cheers.
Nice picking one up today! I've been looking for another option. Because it's so slow and because of the remote is horrible
This sounds like what has been teased for the next generation Chromecast. Makes a person wonder either Walmart's Onn liked the idea that they ran with it, or Google decided to let them release their version first before Google releases their flagship version later.
Wouldn't surprise me at all to see Google do something new this fall. Question is *what* that will be.
@PhilNickinson , have you had any with the volume fluctuating on the built in speaker? I'm able to lower the volume with the remote as long as I have the buttons setup to control the box and not the TV. If I switch the buttons back to controlling the TV, the next time I go to use the voice commands, the built in speaker is crazy loud. Also, it won't turn the built in speaker volume down by voice. Says I have to turn on the TV. This is only real issue I'm having. I'm considering turning off the built in speaker and using a Google Home Mini I have instead, but that kind of negates one of the advantages this device has. I'm hoping maybe I'm doing something wrong, or it can be addressed in a future firmware upgrade.
@@TheJamminjj57 I think you're maybe trying to use it in a way that's not intended, and running into something weird because of it.
@@PhilNickinson isn't there an updated Chromecast coming out this year, that'll act as a Google home hub? I bet there's some new AI integrations coming with that as well since Google is all in on AI now. This ON device will be outdated soon.
@@Sirvibin86 Maybe! Possibly! Probably! No idea what or when, though. And pricing should be interesting. No reason Google can’t compete (or undercut) this thing.
I have a couple of the Onn 4K Streaming devices, and I've been happy with them. They don't support Dolby Vision, but the TVs they are on don't need that feature. They've been getting software updates, and they have a much better remote than the Chromecast.
I may pick one of these up also.
What do you mean it doesn't support Dolby visión? It's says it does right on the box.
@@eddyrsportz the "Onn 4k Streaming Devices" are a different product. They are the $20 boxes.
The device from this video that I said I may pick up is the "Onn 4k Pro Google TV Streaming Device." Yes it does support Dolby Vision
He is talking about the previous version that didn't have Dolby. The new Pro version does.
To think that I nearly RETURNED it last night. Reached Walmart too late, then gave it another try. Onn 4K is a dream come true. At last, I can use a comfortable remote to reach my custom launcher and favorite apps with one click.
do you have the pro or non pro?

Thanks! And yeah, I wouldn't throw out a perfectly working Chromecast.
After watching your review I went and bought one yesterday. It is all set up and so far Im impressed. Don't miss all of Amazons ads when using the firestick! Thanks for the great review!!
Wow I’m actually surprised to see modern dad again. I thought he just stop doing this stuff. Good to see him back
fantasic device super snappy excellent build works great as a smart speaker! replaced my 1st gen firestick max. and couldn't be happier only negative i have is i wish the hands free played audio with the tv off
So its basically perfect. Does it support ultrawide monitors?
Do you think this cd be used as an audio dongle lets say attached to a soundbar?
Thanks for getting an answer from Walmart about the backlit remote issue!
It's so crazy! And there's still something odd about it. Almost felt like what they told me was backwards. But we'll just have to see.
When did you purchase your device that it came with the non-backlit remote?
@@TCintheClutch May 7.
@@PhilNickinson oh ok, quite a while ago. Thanks.
You're right saying that wireless or ethernet connector support almost all sources. For those who want the highest resolution stream buy a $20 usb dongle to add 1 MB ethernet.
Are the UI text and elements constantly in 4k? Or is it the same low reso 1080p for slow processors where 4k is only reserved for videos?
First, 1080p ain’t low-res. But I know what you mean. I haven’t had any problems with the text. You might find the occasional app icon or something that doesn’t look great. That’s very hit and miss, though. And if you’re using your own photos as screensavers, well, that’s on you. (I have some that didn’t render well.)
@@PhilNickinson Sorry I meant lower* resolution. Do you think the video processing of the ONN 4k Pro can compete with the native video processing of say, Tizen OS on Samsung 4K TVs? Im very satisifed with the video playback of my Samsung TV, it's just that it has blurry texts and icons. I tried the Mi Box 4K and the UI is clear and high resolution enough to not bother me, what bothers me is its video playback, while it's sharp and clear and all, it's just not as good as the native playback from Tizen OS. It's 9/10 vs 10/10 good. How about the Apple TV, do you think it'll have a better video playback than Tizen OS?
@@PhilNickinson Also do you think, I can get the same high quality UI and video playback from the ONN 4k Pro with the regular ONN 4K NON-PRO streaming device?
@@PhilNickinson that's semantics. No, it's not low res at face value, but in context, it's very low res. 1440p phones have been a thing for an entire decade now. By definition, 1080p is laughably outdated, but like h264, it still has many legitimate real world purposes since it's way better than "good enough". So, in a phone, 1080p is low res when it's been found on budget 100 dollar phones for about 5 years (yet people love to forget this when they accept paying 800+ dollars for a screen resolution from 2012).
Tldr: I overall agree, but tech moves on. 1080p is low res in 2024 and it's silly to argue otherwise. However, like 1080p, there are plenty of outdated things that are very useful and relevant (you can definately argue that paper books are outdated, but there are tons of reasons to want to keep books around and to read them).
I say all of this as someone who strongly feels that the word "outdated" has had its meaning change dramatically over the past decade. My 6 year old LG V40 can do things that your "modern" phone cannot do, and can do some things much faster due to the way Android used to be designed. I would be downgrading by phone if I got a newer one due to the way I use a phone. My phone is not "outdated" in the same way it would be if it from 2010 and 6 years old (although, ironically, a 6 year old Windows Mobile phone was able to do way way more than the first few iPhones could... I need to shut up before I erode my own argument haha). A similar thing has happened to 1080p. It's outdated by definition, but it has a new purpose in today's hyper connected video sharing world and with modern codecs.

Does this support TrueHD Atmos? (uncompressed atmos) - the Shield is still the best for that if not.
The shield is approaching ten years old real quick
@@JeskidoYTAnd it's still the best! It's bizarre really
I bought the Onn puck about a year ago and totally love it.
As soon as the 4K Pro showed up on the Walmart website I pounced on it.
I haven’t set it up yet, but I’m sure I’m going to be very pleased with it.
I got it for the expanded Ram and Storage as well as the built in 3.0 USB port.
The Ethernet is a nice touch, but at 10/100 I’m probably going to use a USB hub with and Gigabit Ethernet port in it.
There are actually 3 versions of the remote.
The one with the Live TV not backlit.
One without the Live TV not backlit.
And the backlit version.
I just got the one without the Live TV not backlit.
Wait WUT?!?!?!?!
@@PhilNickinson what are you asking, man?
can i use gigabyte ethernet port in it ?
@@daraqadir1421 sure, just don’t expect gigabit speeds.
@@daraqadir1421 yes. I have one on my Onn puck and I’m going to put one on my Onn 4K Pro.
What about DTS, DTS-HD, DTS-X, TrueHD and audio passthrough?
Do logins carry over to the new device or are apps just preloaded and sign ins are needed?
It depends on the app. Netflix still uses that API correctly. Most others don't. But a lot of them make it pretty easy to sign back in.
I've just realized that a Fire TV remote can be used with an Onn device, which makes navigation much easier in some areas.
I have a Sony A95J with google tv and the lag during streaming even with a great connection is frustrating to say the least.
Does it support OS version 12+ so it would support Playstation Remote? Would the controller connect via BT?
The only thing i can see that might be missing is DTS:x. Just like the older 4k box. As atmos was just added in a firmware update a few weeks ago.
Actually considering getting one. Because my Smart TV is running out space and this allows expanding the Storage
That's a big reason to get one!
How did you find out you were low on storage?
Same here, my Samsung smart tv is running slow and lagging.
Would be great if we could clone our old streaming device to the new one to speed setup. Setting up a new device is a PIA.
Totally. ... Apple still rules that one. (Though you still have to log in to most individual services there, too.)
I have both as the Google product keeps itself updated regularly. Both are good devices though as long as you go in and strict them.
Been trying to find one in Canada for 2 weeks. No luck so far.
Question: Would they be updating the device?( OS updates/ Security updates)
Yes, these things get updates all the time, even my old Onn $15 streaming stick is still getting updates
This video quality is even better than Caleb's review videos. Kudos to the team DT for such eye candy video quality!
BRB. Telling my wife I'm eye candy. ;)
I think they filmed in DILFby Vision.
@@PhilNickinson lol, what was her response?
I actually really like and appreciate the generic name because it just says what it does. there’s nothing to guess about it. I like the straightforwardness of it.
It's better than some weird arse named Chinese Android box.
The model numbers that end with 09 and later have the "new," intended to be standard remote.
Are you sure you didn't get really lucky with QC? Almost any Onn brand product I or a friend has purchased would have something wrong with it more often than not.
Still holding my breath that NVidia will come out with a new Shield. I use my current one daily, but would be nice to have something newer and faster.
Compare specs with Homatics Box R 4K. It beats the Shield in almost every soeand for $50 less.
@@renesonse5794that’s actually not true
The Shield Pro is only beaten by Apple
That's great to hear. I've always liked Google TV, but never bought one because of the lag. So maybe this version could be the one that I get. Has anyone pair it with other Google speakers? I want to group my tv with Google Speakers to play music throughout my house. I know this is possible with Google's Google TV, but I'm not sure if the Onn device can do this.
I've had a 4k firestick for about 5 yrs now and have been looking to upgrade but didn't feel like getting an Nvidia shield or fire cube if I just want to watch TV. I had to "jailbreak" my firestick so that it could read external USB storage as well as add "3rd party apps" not found on any legal playstores...
Not to mention that Amazon likes to throw software upgrades to disable most customizations on their devices so I think it's time to move on and I'm really leaning towards this device. 🤔
My Chromecast with Google TV had no lag until last week when I unplugged it and it did an update and now lag like crazy, even UA-cam waiting for thumbnails sometimes to display, and then while video playing the video motion stops and just playing audio, what a pain. Hope they have another update to fix soon!
Same.
same
How
I'm not in the market for a streaming box but this sounds like it'd make a great little cheap emulation box
Is Amazon going to offer a better deal on its Fire TV lineup?
If it does not on time for Prime Day, I will most certainly opt for this device.
From the shots I saw, the Fire TV 4k (2nd Gen) and 4k Max (1st and 2nd Gen) and the Fire TV Cube (2nd and 3rd Gen) are the only ones which (a) support Dolby Vision, and (b) have a fluid interface experience.
But all of the Fire TV models mentioned all cost more than the Onn. 4K Pro Google TV. On the case of the Cube, double.
Hence, Amazon has to respond in a big way!
Not only in terms of price, but also in terms of specifications.
Am I able to cast Media content from my phone to the Onn device?
That's the main reason I'm interested in purchasing a Chromecast device.
I'm really surprised my brand new more expensive than my old old old Sony Bravia TV doesn't have Google Chromecast built-in but instead it has casting built-in for Apple, so it's forcing me to have to purchase a separate casting device.
Is the Google Chromecast or Walmart Onn casting device going to be better for me?
You can
There's a version with no ports and the remote is a lot simpler for $20. I've had it for a couple months now and it's great
Both old and new are great
I trust Walmart to listen to everything in my house, unfiltered. They have my best interest in mind.
Good thing Google and Amazon requires a mute switch for any of their devices that uses Alexa or Google Assistant.
Absolutely!
Yeah right
Still forget some of the most important is how does it look the audio video quality look and perform
I swear, every time Caleb goes on vacation he comes back looking brand new. Nice tan though.
Literally younger. :p (I think.)
Will this work in the UK
This is all great info..😊
..short story Short.. i can ditch firestick, use oon and all my channels/apps etc from the Stick.. will be transferred ( WITH 4K) to onn.. along with other channels that are uploaded in the box... ?? 😊
Will this improve picture quality over Chromecast? That's the only thing i care about
You think Onn 4K Pro is a bad name? Did you forget the proper name for the "Google ChromeCast with Google TV 4K"? 🤢🤢
Walmart wins this round, IMO 😄
Still waiting for the Kirkland 4K MAX Stick +.
Interesting that there is no mention of the different remote debacle as part of this review. All future models will come with free tv button and backlight. Pays not to be an early adopter.
2:20 the exact reason to put it in a media cabinet or such. That’s super creepy
I’m cautious optimistic of the physical switch. I would like to see a teardown to make sure it’s actually capable of disabling the microphone.
People need to stop using the ‘’ if you know, you know’’ it’s very annoying to someone new viewing something.
If you live in Canada, it’s a lot more expensive and harder to get
Yeah but you get healthcare. And more holidays. :p
@@PhilNickinsonPhil, if our “universal” healthcare was as wonderful as y’all seem to think it is, our $.70 dollar might almost be worth it…..

You can't get it from Walmart. It'll be from some reseller. I'm almost thinking about heading the Falls on the Buffalo side or get an Amerifriend to send it over.
Only downside is Nest cameras will only steam to a genuine Google device now... I just made a super fast m.2 drive and used a USB hub on the Chromecast and put ALL apps on that. The Chromecast doesn't lag when there's no apps on it. Seems to mostly be an issue when the on board storage is being used. I'm suspecting inadequate cooling as plastic isn't the best conductor. I'm considering taking it apart and putting heat sinks just to see if that would make a difference. If so, I might make my own box with access to the USB hub, built in m.2 storage and a better cooling solution. But, my main thing was being able to stream my Nest Cam to the TV so my wife can keep an eye on the kids in the back yard while folding laundry etc... and it's way less laggy than the built in Sony Google TV experience.
What are the cons?
10 dollar have voice assistant in remote and is it Universal remote can work on samsung tv as well?
For people who like voice command devices, they typically already have those in their homes. So, in my opinion, i think they kind of screwed the pooch with that. They could have put that money elsewhere, such as a better chip, to make it complete a bit more with the Shield.
Great, it's already ready sold out! 😤 Thanks for promoting it! 😂
Weird. I have a really old 4K curved Samsung TV that isn't a smart TV and I have a Chromecast with Google TV on there and I don't have lag either. I bet this device is better but there's no need for me to buy one if I'm not experiencing any issues personally
My AVR is in an open cabinet. Would it work (like my Chromecast)? Is it RF or IR? I don't want to use an HDMI extension because it can cause problems.
It's IR. The only problem is that it doesn't have a huge library of remote codes. I can only control the volume of my older Sony1040 but my newer Denon works fine.
@@alfmeister13, good to know. Thanks for the info. I am concerned for the 'line of sight' because, as I said, using an HDMI extension caused me problems with the Chromecast (not needed in the end because it is RF and, therefor, can be located behind my AVR). About the remote codes, no issue for me because I don't mind using a second remote (Logitech Harmony).
I wonder if Walmart will rebrand onn stuff with the Vizio name
Was chromecast even a thing? Tried their first generation dongle and it was horrible although it was cheaper than others. Just go with nvidia shield pro or firecube...apple tv is one may be good but less user configurations.
Can you cast to it, though, like a regular chromecast?
Yes
Not available at Walmart Canada. Have not been across the border as it requires a passport now. Wally USA might mail you one but only to the border. Odd though that the Canadian stores get ONN TVs, tablets, and accessories but not the streamers. We never got the Xiaomi Mi boxes either...
Can it play youtube music without turning on the tv?
Can you do full control by voice without the remote like the Fire Cube? Like move left/right/up/down and select?
If you have working arms I can't see any reason for wanting to even use that or voice comands in general. Faster to use a remote in most cases. Atleast if you have a Logitech

Could you address a question. I'm a fan of the original no remote Chromecasts. Recommended them to friends, family, and clients. They were cheap. They were great for what they were. When the Chromecast with the Remote came out I replaced all three of my originals. And HAAAATED them. The constantly being advertised to. Recommendations for services I didn't subscribe too was exhausting. They're collecting dust now. I used them for maybe a month before retiring them. Is this device the same Google TV with all the recommendations for services you don't subscribe too as the Chromecast with Google TV?
To be clear, I connected my Netflix, UA-cam, Prime and Plex. But 70% of my recommendations were for Disney, Crave, Hulu, and a half dozen others. It felt like I bought an advertisement machine.

That's concerning that you weren't willing to hold up your remote to your eyeball and check and see if it was backlit. Do you mean to tell me that a media personality for Digital Trends knows so little about button backlighting that they can't immediately tell if it's even possible for it be be backlit by looking at it closely for a few seconds? I really hope this was laziness and not ignorance. Both reflect poorly on Digital Trends, though.
I hope a UK company rebrands this. Why hasn't Google thought of adding a Smartspeaker to their Chromecast.
