For those unfamiliar with _Honkai Impact 3rd_ , a quick run-down of the parallels, specifically with the similarly advanced, ancient civilization of Mu from Earth's Previous Era, 50,000 years prior to the start of the game's story:
When the ordinary days of Mu's citizens were disrupted by the onslaught of attacks by the Honkai, humanity struggled to find a way to respond because conventional weapons were completely ineffective. In addition, the energy emitted by the Honkai could kill normal humans, transforming them into Honkai Beasts or Zombies, which would then attack survivors. There were so few humans left in this era, in fact, that they stopped using surnames entirely, so everyone of consequence was known only by their given names.
The Firemoth Organization became the primary means of resistance, developing Honkai-powered weapons and the means with which to resist Honkai infection. Once just ordinary people living their day-to-day with their own dreams, certain individuals stepped in to fill roles only suited for war with the Honkai. You had scientists like Dr. MEI, Dr. Mobius, and VILL-V, and you also had warriors like Kevin, Kalpas, and Sakura. The scientists developed technologies like battlesuits, Stigma (to resist Honkai infection while also being compatible for using Honkai energy to fight), and equally importantly, the Divine Key series of weapons.
Each Divine Key was made from the core of one of the Herrschers defeated by the Firemoth's warriors. Herrschers were often chosen from among humanity by the Coccoon of Finality to lead the destruction against humanity. They had sovereignty over a conceptual force, and as shown in _Kyoden_ , the weapons made from their defeated cores had the same abilities. But each victory came at a high cost, with Firemoth losing many of their augmented MANTIS soldiers and elite warriors. The Tragedy of Binding while fightng the Herrscher of Binding was particularly costly, as it left the Moths with only twelve warrior-members who could defend the three remaining human cities.
In one samsara cycle, there were thirteen warriors, and one of them brought them all together into one group, heroes and outcasts feared for their destructive power alike. Elysia created the Flame-Chasers to be humanity's best, last hope, but they never really fought together, and since they were still dying one by one in battle, they never really got the chance. Their simulations in the quantum computer of the Golden Courtyard carried their memories, experiences, and techniques for an eventual successor, however.
Mu was not just dependent on its warriors to fight the Honkai. Dr. MEI had developed a multiple-stepped plan to answer the threat: Project SAVE, consisting of the compenents Stigma, Ark, Veruka, and Ember -- plus a hidden one, Sanctuary.
Project Stigma was to force humanity's evolution to a species that could naturally resist the Honkai infection, and it had several different iterations, but the most basic one was also the most desperate: exposing humans to Honkai radiation en masse, sacrificing the majority for the majority who could develop their own Stigma.
Project Sanctuary was in place in case the administrator of Project Stigma ever went too far to carry it out. This was to stop him before he destroyed humanity in his actions.
Project Ark was to send some of humanity on ships to the far reaches of space, hoping they could find a place out of the Honkai's reach. Unfortunately, the Firemoths lost contact with the Ark Fleet shortly after departure, and they were considered lost.
Project Veruka consisted of the psychic Su using the Divine Key _Cosmic Juggernaut_ , which is very similar to the Astral Express, to look into the multiiverse for a world that had defeated the Honkai, and bring their methods back. Su didn't find anything decisive, which seems to mean that if he saw Izumo, it was in an early state, or after the amount of destruction meant it was too far gone anyway.
Finally, Project Ember was for some members to carry the knowledge, technologies, and experiences for fighting the Honkai personally into the future. This plan was for after the Herrscher of the End razed humanity from the Earth. Those carrying out Project Ember would be put into cryosleep in bunkers, awakening after one of the other Divine Keys terraformed Earth so life could emerge again sooner, only 50,000 years later.
The Firemoths and the Flame-Chasers ultimately lost to the Herrscher of the End, casting their hopes for defeating the Honkai into the future, hoping the humanity of the Current Era could do what the Previous Era could not...
This thing is too long, I'm gonna continue in another post.

As brilliant as people like Dr. MEI were, they did not understand the Honkai well. For example, similar to Izumo and the Kami, they did not understand their motivations for attacking. But more immediately, they did not know that the more advanced civilization became, the stronger the Honkai would become. As a result, Kevin, Su, and Hua, who were the ones primarily carrying out Project Ember in the Current Era's ancient days, decided to stop sharing Previous Era tech, and find new ways to carry out their missions.
Fast forwarding to the late stage in Part 1's story, Raiden Mei joined Kevin's organization, World Serpent, to find a way to save Kiana Kaslana from being killed by the Honkai corruption she was suffering from having multiple Herrscher cores. Mei had also come to find answers about the past, and in response, Kevin had her go down into the headquarters basement where the quantum supercomputer, the Elysian Realm, was housed, and take the successor's test of the simulations of the Flame-Chasers, and learn the secrets of the past in the process.
Also by that time, a rapid sequence of Herrschers had both come out and been defeated. Because the advanced AI PROMETHEUS had hacked the Cocoon of Finality in the Previous Era, setting the rules for the number and sequence by which the Herrschers could manifest in a given age, Kevin knew exactly which Herrschers to expect next, the final two. The Herrscher of Corruption appeared right in the Elysian Realm, leaving only the Herrsher of the End afterwards.
So Kevin stole the Authority of Finality, preventing one from manifesting, and then waited for the Herrschers of Humanity, a special wrinkle created by Elysia, to come to him. So he could show them what strength was necessary to wield the Authority on the level of Finality directly from the Cocoon. Which is what, after their exhaustive two year journey, Kiana Kaslana, Raiden Mei, and Bronya Zaychik answered him.
Now, contrast to Earth, Izumo also forged the 12 Sentinels from defeated Kami, and although they all took the form of swords, they were all highly effective. So much so that at one point, recognizing the end of the war, Izumo broke down all the Sentinels. They later resumed the fighting when they needed to, reforging the broken blades into _Origin_ , wielded by Mei, and _End_ .
First it's fascinating that Mei here is a warrior, not a scientist. It is uncertain what role Izumo's Kevin played, but given _HI3_ 's version of him was originally a happy-go-lucky himbo of a jock high school student, imagining him as a scientist in MEI's place makes me laugh. Anyway, Izumo's Kevin, like his counterpart, steals the Authority of the Kami of the End, and becomes one with the sword called _End_ . He then waits for Mei with _Origin_ to come defeat him, and as a result both blades are broken. At this point, Izumo has actually succeeded at defeating the Kami, unlike ancient Mu, although at heavy price.
But now Mei turns her blade against the threat she senses from IX. She uses her own power to reforge the broken _Origin_ as _Life_ , and slashes. But IX cannot be slashed. It swallows up everything that was Izumo, including its long history of conflict with the Kami, and its victories. And Mei is changed by her encounter with IX, into Acheron, with _Life_ being altered into _Naught_ .
But still, Acheron journeys, seeking Life and Finality. Despite everything, she still seems to have hope, and she puts in a lot more effort, for example trying to convince Ifrit and Sam not to fight her, than would seem to be indicated for a Self-Annihilator following IX.
