Nice video. That has a lot of connectivity options. I recently did a storage upgrade. It gets expensive fast. Right now I use a pair of QNAP TR-004 DAS devices to hold 4x 10TB and 4x 14TB. They are pretty convenient and simple. I also have a TS-431K that I'm trying to setup as a video and photo ingest server. Their one click backup feature is functionally limited, so I'm trying to figure out if I can write scripts or something to make it work how I want it to work.
I wish their NAS products weren't so expensive. I have been looking to buy one of their products for a while, mainly for bulk storage, media serving, and their security camera software since they don't gouge you for the IP camera support like Synology.
Please test the AppleSilicon iMac once it comes out next year. I would be really interested in such a machine, but won't buy before I see performance tests in image editing.
still on hard disck or SSD? edit from the M2 memory ... NAS is cheaper but I just don't like harddrive dying every 2-3 years. the good NAS vs the cheap one actually is the recovery in case drives dies.... need to be hotswap available with multi drive failure at the same time and how long is the recover time. .
Good day! I need an expert opinion! We have a small film production. We have an office and 4 Mac Studio in it. We want to install a NAS in the studio so that we can edit from it IN PARALLEL on all 4 computers, accessing the same volumes/files from several editing stations at the same time. We plan to make a local 10G network. I want to buy QNAP TVS-h1688X-W1250-32G for this purpose. But some sellers in stores assure me that this is an amateur level device and it will not allow mounting simultaneously from several mounting stations, and advise me to buy QSAN XCubeNAS XN8012R which in my opinion will not justify its money because it has weaker characteristics (we also do not have a server rack now). What do you advise in this case? I want to find the best solution for my money and not let my fellow editors down so that they don't suffer from bugs later.
My opinion is based on my couple of years experience on QNAP. Don't buy it. Buy something more stable. QNAP software is crap and will give you outages and outages over and over again. For example recent firmware update done by system and after firmware update, can't login. Means can't access anything because of encrypted storage. QNAP responded after 2 days and their instructions didn't fix the issue still. No response for last 24 hours and I'm still waiting after 4 days of complete outage. Hoping that eventually at least it gets fixed without any data loss. It has been a disaster situation so far. Time I have spent on QNAP issues working with them again and again every now and then is really just too much too handle when I have already too much work going on.
@@binli3217 Still don't know. Didn't reserach current market conditions. Many vendors have entered market lately. Need to research all reviews and feedbacks. QNAP is going to push QTS 5 soon ahead, another set of disasters waiting. From experience they can't miss the opportunity to stuff things up.
If your NAS supports LACP or has at least a 2.5GbE port, then if your router has 802.1ax support, then with a WiFi adapter such as the Intel AX200, you get a real world throughput of around 1.5Gbit/s (around 187-200MB/s).
@@Razor2048 that'd be a pretty decent setup, but my NAS is homebuilt with a repurposed old HP Z420 motherboard and that goes gigabit ethernet to my router which is AC, plus my desktop (and NAS) could get a better networking card I suppose, but currently have an old N450 wifi card, but there'll be other limitations with the older hardware that I'm using that doesn't make it worth it. I straight gigabit ethernet connection would be nice is all, I suppose
@@TheJunky228 In cases like that, you are largely stuck going with used dual NIC Ethernet adapters (to keep costs as low as possible, and use LACP to get 2 gigabit for the NAS build, or find a cheap 2.5GBE adapter, as well as a switch that supports that PHY rate (often in the $20-30 range).
@@Razor2048 I'm just physically too far away from my NAS (in its current placement) for a wired connection to make sense. Thanks for the tips and suggestions though, I've saved those to keep in mind for later just in case I decide to change my setup a bit

Google "Raid 5 is obsolete". With large drives it's a really bad idea to use Raid 5, it has been replaced by Raid 6.

Wish I could direct wire my NAS to my pc, I'm stuck with transferring everything over our wifi lmao
