- I placed mated queens from Jose @TheCaliforniaBeekeeper and Josh Ray (Bear Creek Apiaries in Florida). I then went back and checked on them a few days later. Check it out!

@brucesbees is a beekeeping channel, a vlog of sorts. Here we discuss apis mellifera, aka the honeybee. We give people a look into our sideliner beekeeping operation. We share successes and failures. We show how we feed bees and treat bees for pests, such as varroa mites, small hive beetles and others. I am not a treatment free beekeeper though at one time I thought I wanted to be. We also discus things that are important to us that I think apply to beginning beekeepers and more seasoned beekeepers alike. We also show the beekeeping techniques we use to manage the bees and harvest our honey and sell our honey. We talk about beekeeping equipment and tools. At times we also catch swarms of bees and have even done a few cutouts, though I usually leave that for the professionals. This is not Beekeeping 101, though hopefully the information here is useful. As my good friend @Mike Barry says, this is not a necessarily a "how to" channel. It's a "how I do" channel. I hope you will continue to join us as we continue to perform hive inspections, discuss important matters in the beekeeping world, meet other beekeepers, perform splits, grow our operation and just continue down the path of this wonderful beekeeping adventure. Let's GO!!! - Розваги
Good looking queen's 👍 Hope you have 💯 take. Thanks Bruce good health and God bless
Thanks. So far they are looking pretty good. Not 💯 take. Probably due to beekeeper error. But very high percentage.
Nice looking queens. It’s been a really windy year here this spring.
Y’all have had a rough one this year. I am amazed that bees can survive up there. Maybe the cold is about to be behind you for awhile.
Bruce , Love this video, all the way from Australia, always good to see how you do beekeeping in USA cheers Keith 🙂💝
Thanks Keith. It always amazes me when people watch these videos on the other side of the world.
Those are some gorgeous queens Bruce! Pretty awesome to see your splits doing well!
Peeked in them today and they’re re looking great for the most part. Added some supers on them. Will see how things go.
Bruce, ty so much for sharing you time keeping bees, I actually have learnt a good deal from your videos over the last 6mp I've been watching. Ty, Blessed Days...
Thanks DC. That means a lot to me.
Hey Bruce how are you God bless. NYC. 100 plus Hives. Good work that will keep you busy
Thanks for checking in!
Lookin good!
Really nice Queen's well done Bruce
I will clip them after 2 weeks 👌😉
Will see how they do but so far I am pleased.
Good stuff Bruce! I have 10 coming next month from Jose. I can’t wait!
Awesome. Hopefully they will work out well for you.
Looking good Bruce. Keep us posted on how those Queens are doing.
👍
Great looking queens!
Hi Bruce, man I would love to have the chance to get some of them queens from Jose I watch all his vlogs and he is definitely doing something right with his queen rearing, only a big massive pond in the way I don’t think they would survive the journey over here too the UK 🇬🇧. Keep us updated on these colonies Bruce mate.
Yes that is a big pond!!! Thanks for checking in!
Not sure is Sebastian from Beekeeping Gardening sells queens but he lives in the UK.
These are beautiful queens! you're getting up there in colony numbers, gal for you its working out :)
Yes. Almost too many. I really do enjoy it though. I am probably getting close to maxing out what I can manage.
I believe I see one at 7.05 on the brood.
great stuff Bruce
Thanks!!!
queen at 7:05 on back side of frame right center
Beat me to it. I saw the same thing. Good eye!
Hey Bruce I just pay a dollar more and have the breeder mark them because I need to find them quick when we're doing splits
Yeah not a bad idea.
Why did you buy in new queens when you had emergency queen cells that were viable?
I want the genetics of these queens.
She was on the 3rd frame around the 7:06 mark
Bruce are you RE-QUEENING? What add a new queen to the boxes in April? I'm confused what you were doing.
Introducing queens to new splits.
Where did you get the new world carnies from California thx bryon
These California queens came from Jose Uribe aka The California Beekeeper on UA-cam. The other queens came from Josh Ray at Bear Creek Apiaries in Florida.
Looks like Queen 705 but its so fast who knows. Blonde
3rd box 3frame think you had a queen, she was moving from bottom to top right? 7:05
I think you’re right. Thanks for checking in!
frame 3 queen spotted 7:04
Yep. Thanks!
New queens are exciting... but I am a first year keeper and attached to my one and only Queen (Harriet!) - I am happy to keep her for her second season. What did you use to mark your Queen?
Painters marker from Walmart
@@brucesbees - ahh, ok - I will have to look that up to see what we have in New Zealand that is equivalent (we don't have Walmart).
I think Posca Pens are the most common ones that people use. They are available on Amazon. If you Google “queen marking pens” some different options will come up.
Do you change queens yearly?
Not all of them but trying to lower average age of queens.
Where do you get your outer covers with the ability to feed them?
If you are referring to the lids we just use a 2 3/4” hole saw
It is the right size for a mason jar lid.
What about the outer cover, do you make these?
I am not sure what you mean by outer cover. I don’t use inner covers or outer covers typically. Just lids.
I am referring to the top cover of your hive. The lid.
tip 7:04 gold mid right
making feed shims today on dads ol table saw
I have started putting my old boxes that I am taking out of production aside and plan to cut them down to use as shims in the future.
@@brucesbees ive considered this also, thanks bruce,
I think that’s what Mike Barry does. Makes a lot of sense.
Why not let the splits create/grow their own new queen? Why add a new queen instead?
If you add a mated queen the idea is she will get right to work and it also takes away some of the risk of having the bees make their own.
@@brucesbees Good to know. Thank you.
@@brucesbees Also curious about how far above the ground the hives are. I ready they should be at least 2 feet off the ground but yours look lower. Is that correct and if so why?
No they don’t have to be 2 feet off the ground. In theory it is good I think because it can keep predators like skunks etc away. But in reality they can sit on the ground without problems. Most of my bees are on pallets with entrances probably 4 ot 5 inches off the ground.
@@brucesbees thank you. 👍
The virgins will hatch and kill your laying queens if they're in there. A laying/mated queen won't destroy queen cells.
Yep. I think the hives with cells had already eliminated the new queens because no eggs and didn’t see the queens. Very few were in this situation though. Almost all were accepted and laying. I did the best I could that night but it was getting dark. The ones with cells were the ones I had introduced later in the evening. I just have to do the best I can with the situation I have been given. Wish I could have gotten out there earlier and spent more time introducing them. But a vast majority seem to be in great shape and the rest should just go ahead and take care of their situation. Thanks for the input.
@brucesbees not talking down on your work, I'm the same, do the best I can with the time I have, just sharing my experiences. Keep at it, you're doing exactly what I had intended with almond pollination I just don't have time working a full time job as well as trying to manage roughly 300 colonies. Hope your splits turn out strong.
Yeah I didn’t take it that way. I understand exactly what you are talking about. Beginning to think a little bit about almond pollination. I have enjoyed it and may continue to do it but a I am beginning to wonder if it is worth the effort. By the time you figure equipment and labor not sure the pay out is worth it. Will see how things look going into next year. It’s a lot of work to get them ready in time to send them. Thanks for checking in. I am always learning and have just recently learned what kind of assassins new virgin queens can be. I guess I always thought the laying queen would kill a virgin but have since leaned that the opposite is more likely to be true.
