Except for the Ondsel Assembly workbench and cloud storage, these tools are the default in the .22 Dev branch and is going to be default in the next stable release. Same with the transparent panels.
This isn't to say Ondsel hasn't had a profound influence on FreeCAD in a very short time - it's unlikely any of the new features would be available without them. Good thing await FreeCAD in the near and longer term future.
That's some really valuable information. Thank you!
Thanks for the summary, that was exactly the type of information I was looking for. Assembly workbench is already a big improvement, to me it was the only really missed feature from FreeCAD compared to other CAD software
I Hope Ondsel does to Freecad what Blender Foundation does to Blender. In recent years Freecad's development had been pretty stagnant. Hopefully, if there is a company behind, it will help revitalize this amazing software and one day, not so far into the future, we will finally see Freecad 1.0.
That would be great!
The fact that Ondsel is backed by a company, which means that you soon have to pay for using it.
@@fglatzel well, maybe for Ondsel. But Freecad will always remain Freecad, free and open source, it's in the license, if I'm not mistaken.
@@designfreedom3651
That's why I will never use Ondsel but rather stick with FreeCAD.
I don't like cloud storage.. I like to keep my stuff on my computer.. PRIVATE !!!! not for some company to scan and possibly steal my ideas..
That's understandable!
The cloud storage aspect is entirely optional anyway. Unlike Onshape and F360.
You could write your own CAD APPLICATION that offers no cloud storage, only local. Once complete you can share it by freely allowing downloads of your open source code. Now this is a great idea
As another commented, most of the improvements will be in next FreeCAD release. I found the assembly to not be to my liking. A2+ is better and more intuitive. Though with all assembly modules I have never understood the use of edges as mating constraints. Can't think of a real world app where one would mate edges of physical objects, so why do it in the virtual world.
Additionally, I was mislead by an Ondsel promotional video, perhaps my hope, that it addressed the TPN issue. It doesn't.
Lastly, it still defaults to the ancient Win 3.0 toolbar layout with the annoying pulldown to switch WBs menu, and the ModernUI WB, which I exclusively use in FreeCAD, doesn't behave well in Ondsel.
Thanks for the feedback! There is still work to do indeed.
Of course you can have an edge of an object touch something in the real world....
There are uses for edge mating. Especially if trying things out quickly. If you want to rotate something around an edge you put the edge mate + an angle constraint. Finished.
@@martinsvensson6884 Touching edges is not mating. Please, provide a real world example of two edges mating together. I can think of faces mating as sliding over one another but to do an edge I cannot think of anything. I'm not trying to be obtuse, just can't think of any real world example where an edge is mated. But you have, so I'd like to know where you've seen this.
@@jwatkins672012 So you have never placed something on its edge every? :) Try lean any board against a wall and then look...
As I said.. its also practical if you just want to try something out and see how it fits. A swinging door without having to create any fastenings for example.
Is ondsel and freecad the same?
Ondsel is an engineering suite running on FreeCAD. The CAD software is free, but you have paid options to use their Lens software (cloud storage). A good thing about this is that development can reach goals quicker.
@@AllVisuals4U so should i download freecad first before downloading ondsel?
No you can start with Ondsel! It's a stand alone from FreeCAD running on it.
@@AllVisuals4U oh thanks, will my created mode be uploaded on public or not? As for free version
Not sure about that. I think not.
The workflow is so smooth in ondsel i try it the last days. And it make so much fun. The ui looks also insane.
I hope ondsel will make freecad more accessible for more users. And that they pass on their developments.
Yes I agree with you!
It's terrible! I will never buy or even try any software that you have to rent by the month or year!
The day Apple or Microsoft starts renting me an operating system rather than selling it to me is the day I quit using their operating system. The same goes for software I run on top of those operating systems such as my CAD/CAM program.
For now the CAD suite is completely free. Of course there is a chance that this can change, but for me it's definitely a try!
@@AllVisuals4U there is NO CHANCE - it's free and will be free. Only part that require subscription is cloud service that just a plugin. Before filming reviews it's good to educate yourself first...
The video says that the CAD suite is free.
As far as I know you do not buy neither Apple, nor MS sw, you actually rent those. A quote from OS-X EULA: "Apple and/or Apple’s licensors retain ownership of the Apple Software itself and reserve all rights not expressly granted to you."
Idrsther buy solidworks then rent this
The CAD suite is for free. Only the online services are paid.
I rather use FreeCAD than paying a single cent for CAD and why would you want something that doesn't run properly on Linux?
