I received this printer from one of my customers who bought cartridges from me as well that were third party. HP occasionally updates their Officejet printers firmware at random times to prevent the use of Non Hp cartridges. Another thing to note is that if you purchase a new officejet printer it is set to default to update the firmware automatically once connected to internet.
After some research I was able to find some older firmware updates that would downgrade the printer so that the cartridges could be used again.

I was using the instant ink program, and had bought an official HP ink Black cartridge a year ago to cover a situation where I might have a large print job and run out of ink. Sure enough, this happened last Thursday and when I installed the replacement cartridge, the printer refused to use it as it was an older cartridge and no longer supported. I was furious. I cancelled my instant ink subscription, and started shopping around for a new printer without ink DRM. Because of the chip shortage, there are none in stock right now, so I decided to dive deep and try to get the one I had to work with aftermarket ink. Your video really saved my day, and has freed me from the tyranny of HP DRM.

Hi Martin, can you tell me how you installed the new file into your printer? My HP 7730 doesn't have a USB port so I am not sure how to transfer the downgrade file. Any help would be most appreciated.
Awesome job, worked perfectly on my 7740, i flashed the firmware with an usb key and it worked as intended, i can use my stock of 1 year old cartridges again (dont be surprised when the printer says that you already had the last driver, try your cartridges and you'll see that it work)
The last update of Septembre 2022 was the issue (make sure to disable the notification of the possible upgrade on your printer because like me, you can press the button ok for the upgrade without even really noticing it....)
You do not understand how much I appreciate that you made this video! I was about to throw out this Officejet 6962 because of HP locking it down. I can use third party cartridges again!

You're the best! I can't believe this worked. I unpacked the two files and placed them together on an empty flash drive, plugged it into my 7740, and it prompted me to update the firmware with the flash drive. immediately after the install, it started priming my new ink and finished printing my job.
You saved my work! I have already printed my first page after 2 hours of trying to fix this crazy machine! I got really angry and then your video appeard! I am so thankful! Downgrading and switching off the automatic upgrades helped.
Dude, thank you. You saved me some good on this. Thank you for that firmware file linked. Copied the firmware to a USB drive and plugged it into my HP Officejet pro 7740 and it resolved the issue. Turned off auto-update for now as well.
Ow, thanks! I tried several times using USB cable and the downgrade software, but it keep running until timeout. This is the only way that works for me, and is the easy way to do it. For every one, the firmware is located inside the downgrade (update) software package, if you get the EXE version, unzip it and get the firmware file inside (.ful ou .ful2 extesion with about 63MB), copy it to a USB drive, insert on the printer, select update from USB, sit, wait and voilà!

Working on iMac, and not finding a solution through files for iMac, I have been able, thanks to you, install the old firmware using a Windows 10 PC. THANK YOUUUUUUU!! I TRIED FOR TWO DAYS to get my firmware uninstalled, do a workaround, try different programs, try hp smart app, tried the hp jetadmin app, power off/on, reinstall, install... and THIS WORKED!!

Thank you - these firmware downgrades still work in Aug 2022. I downgraded the firmware in 2 HP printers (7740 and a 8710). You are a ifesaver - I had many sets of remanufactured cartridges that were no longer working. Now the HP printers work like a charm.
I couldn't get it to work on my 8710. Did you have to do anything else to it? My download only has the .ful, but his blog post shows a .exe and some other stuff as well.
Not quite... I'm right now trying to make the downgrade to a 7720, but the software does not detect the printer... Do I require to install the HP driver from the page, or the built-in driver should sufice? I receive an active error that the printer recognizes the cartridge as a "Non-HP chip" and that the firmware refuses to use non genuine cartridges...
Ok think I got it. You need to install the full driver to be able to downgrade the printer. The basic built-in driver provided by Microsoft is not enough!

Thanks a lot! I got an 8720pro free and auto-update locked out 3rd party carts I recently bought, now it's back in business.
I downloaded the 95x zip file for my HP OfficeJetPro 7720 and used 7-Zip to extract the .rar files. I found an .exe for my Win11 that I executed. The 1851A verison firmware installed using the wireless connection from computer to printer. All problems are now fixed. Awesome!
If any one coudnt downgrade by this way … its because you disabled updates from the printer by service menu.. you need to enable the update first then use this file .. then disable the update firmware again… not from the app no but from the printer itself.. not the automatic updates..search for disable/ enable updates firmware for your printer at UA-cam you will find the way … thank God then this guy .. after long search I downgraded from 2336b to this old version 🎉

Hi thanks for the upload. I have connected my 7740 to my laptop via usb cable but when opening the update firmware it cannot find my printer so I cannot select it to update. Do you have a fix for this?? Any help much appreciated.
The rollback seems to have worked for my 7740. Unzipped the folder you specified on my comp, followed your PDF instructions.
I wonder if there are any printer manufacturers that don't try to force you to use their products?

Thank you very much for your info! I almost throw away my printer. My case was a little bit different. After I downgraded the firmware, I had to use the 3rd party cartridge. If I use the original one, I would get the same error.
No problem, HP is trying it's best even at its own detriment to block consumers to not have the freedom to choose how they use what they own.

thank you very much - you save us a lot of money! just to share my experience: when the printer was connected by USB the driver setup did not recognize the printer. when connecting through ethernet the driver setup immediately find the printer

At the moment no, I am from a caribbean island named Trinidad and Tobago. So for the while I mainly sell locally, if the demand is there I will try to expand but since the pandemic, restrictions has made it a bit difficult to receive ink and ship stuff.

Unfortunately I did this in the past (last year) but my printer updated to a newer version by mistake. HP installed a new firmware and with this one there is no way to rollback. The rollback procedure simply stay there forever...

Have you seen this error >>> Older Generation Cartridge >>> The indicated cartridge is an older generation cartridge that does not work in your printer. It can still be used with some older printer models.
That's the error I am now getting, and it makes no sense. I purchased these cartridges a while ago, but they are the exact same ones that I just removed and now that I install the 'new' ones I'm being told they're for an older printer. Very frustrating.
The unfortunate part is I bought the printer and replacement cartridges at the same store and they have a no return policy on cartridges. Their solution was to sell me new cartridges again with a no return policy.

The firmware update you currently have in the machine is disregarding any cartridge with a warranty/expiry date of 2020 and before. You have to purchase a cartridge with a date 2021 and beyond.
I see that you had software for the office jet 9010 on the video but it is not in the folder. Do you still have it for that printer?

Before the firmware update I could strink A3 to A4 it's been removed by the update the icon disappeared on the HP 8740 office jet pro, I always used HP original cartridges, HP sent me new cartridge replacement asked me send pictures of the cartridge expire dates and also pictures of errors on the Lcd screen, the original HP failed bought from Amazon, Thanks i gone to printer maintenance and disabled updates and also found option to factory reset,

I managed to get around the 'locked' setting simply by doing a factory reset on my 7720.
is there something similar for hp deskjet 1510 as it gives error of older generation cartridge installed and doesn't work ?
Thank you very much for your videos. I can't get in to disable updates. The printer is "locked up" with the message "This printer is not designed to use continuous ink systems. To resume printing remove the continuous ink system and install Original HP (or compatible) ink cartridges." I cannot access the printer menu. the printer, I have updated to firmware 1849 and still with the same message.

The error of not using continuous ink cartridges is related to the printhead or sometimes the printer recognising you swapping cartridges for that particular color multiple times. I have mixed results for solving this issue one was to get a cartridge from another person's machine that is recognized and putting it in your machine. The other is changing the printhead unfortunately.
Go to Setting > Printer maintenance > Restore > Restore Factory Defaults > Continue
when it's done, go to Setting > Printer maintenance > Upgrade the printer > Printer updated option & choose "off"

Looks like HP has blocked the firmware update. I have the 9010 and when I run the executable it runs for 10 minutes or so and then fails. The printer screen stays stuck on "checking for printer updates" and I have to reboot it.
Gutted. I am going to throw away the printer.

Hello friend, I wanted to know if the error is that the imoresion head appears to be missing, it does not detect or it was installed incorrectly.
what should I do
If you are getting printhead is missing, the board on the back of the printhead is damaged. I have not found any solution other than replacing the printhead completely.

Nice tut my man! the only struggle Im facing rn is the lack of a front USB port in the 7720 series. It does have a back USB entrance but the square type, not for a regular usb key. Please anyone advise on how to transfer downloaded firmware to the printer. I can't seem to do it via wifi or whatever...? Thnkssss!!!!!!

Unfortunately I dont know how to do it via the mac, also the .ful way seems to mainly work with the 7740 model. Can you see if you can borrow a windows laptop to try the downgrade with the exe file provided in the description above.

Sorry for the late reply Unfortunately I dont have firmware for older machines, but if you are gettting that error, try and see if you can get another cartridge to know if the cartridge is faulty. If it is still giving that error it could be the board or the printhead contacts where the cartridge is inserted that is giving you the error.

i have two printers 7740 but one is with the firmware 1828A and the other is with 1849A is the same printers system, the printer with the firmware 1828A works good but the other one dont recognize the cartridges
@@miguel_arq_13gp75 I want you to check the expiry date on the cartridges you have installed in that printer. If they are saying 2020 they may not work or if they are third party and have a chip before hp's recent update they may not work.

If you replace a cartridge while others are empty you can cause your printer to give a system supply error.
Problem incompatible Cartridge with this Printer. Any solution?
Are the Cartridges original or compatible, also see if the manufacturer date before 2020. The firmware if it hasn't been downgraded that error could come up.

Im sorry for the late response but I dont have the firmware for the 8600 series, but they stopped doing firmware cartridge prevention on those printers for a while now.
@@simplybs9311 don't worry. The problem was in the cartridge, not in the firmware. Because the printer was used on different computer and the previous user locked the black ink cartridge. So I couldn't use it on another laptop. I've solved the problem with the new replacement cartridge. I've cleaned the printing head with alcohol and the printer works now like a new one.

@@alanstclair8040 Mine is a 7740 model. I'm not sure how it differs from the 7730 model. You don't need a USB port to accomplish this. Just work with your machine's setting and go through each step as listed in the video. Can be intimitading at first, but it does work. HP should be castrated for doing this to people.

Sorry for the late response but I dont have the firmware for the 8600 series, but HP hasnt been doing updates as such to affect the use of 3rd party cartridges for this model.

@@TouchMe35 Well I would say try another cartridge first if you have a spare. The printhead contacts inside for that specific cartridge maybe faulty as well. Its replaceable but you would have to get another head.

And you have tried using the .rfu files to do the downgrade? The busy issue happened to me once and I was unable to do the downgrade as well but that was doing while connected to a computer. Sorry for the late reply.
