Thanks for posting this clip. What memories. Like being in a time machine. Now 77 years old, I am the photographer (then only 28) running backwards and shooting in the first 14 seconds. When the production company decided that the non-pro photographer/extras over-dramatised, I was one of about 9 professional photographers hired to bring some authenticity to the pit scenes, When that opening scene was shot, I'd arrived on set from London, virtually half an hour before and been slotted straight into the scene by the director, Lee Katzin, still wearing the clothes I had been travelling in. I came to hate that outfit, especially that snake-skin belt because, for continuity, I then had to wear the same clothes for the next three months. Mind you, I shouldn't complain. We were very well-paid with liberal expenses (in cash in USD) and by keeping my cameras loaded, I still earn money from my photographs on that movie, to this very day.

For most auto racing fans of this type of racing cars...in fact, just about any auto racing...this is a real classic. It's "simple" ads of 50 years ago on cars & racing uniforms was just that - simple compared to the past 30 - 40 years that auto racing has been literally advertising and somewhat less on drivers and teams. Now, that's my opinion.
The late, great Steve McQueen was 40 years old when he did this movie back in '70. It was released in the theaters during 1971. I, for some reason, never went to see it in a theater. I waited some years to see it before it showed on TV. I was very impressed with his driving. Though there seems to be little dialogue in the movie, if I remember, it did have car action.
The centering on one of auto racing's best known motor products - Porsche - is great. Those cars - racing types & consumer type - have tops in the history of car manufactures. I take it that McQueen really enjoyed this movie. It's a shame that he was cast in some part in the 1966 "Grand Prix" movie with Jim Garner.

    • @rotorhd2
      @rotorhd2 4 роки тому

I was 15 when I saw this in the theater, I think I went back at least 5 times to watch it from the front row. Years later it was on TV, didn't look good. It was the sound, too! This movie is one of the few that affected my life...who cares about the story, but , I admit, Johann Ritter's wife was my first crush lol.

Garner mentions that McQueen was pretty choked about Garner putting "The Checkered Flag" together as a jump from McQ. plans to do a grand prix film. But McQueens EGO is the size of Brazil, so I really don't have that much sympathy for him!

Just watched this, not much said, great footage and that was about it! I thought my tv was bust earlier losing sound but that was part of the film lol. I still enjoyed it, great to see Le Mans how I remembered it as a kid in the 70’s. Didn’t appreciate all the access to the pits, hanging out with the drivers who knew my father who worked in the industry back then.

1970 when this film came in I drove at my first endurance race. It was a 4-Hour race at some point West Virginia. I drove a Corvette and we finished quite well. From that race I fell in love with endurance racing. This movie along with Grand Prix were my inspirations. The following year I get involved with IMSA and the Camel GT series. Nothing like the 24-hour but they were good clean competition. My lifelong dream was to drive at LeMans. U00nfortunately I never made it. I found out what it cost to do that and that didn't fit in my reality

Their mistake was to make this as dramatic Hollywood film. They should have made it as a 90 minute racing documentory. This is why the film flopped at the box office. Steve did a great job, as he always does.Steve McQueen had that natural charisma, you either have or you don't. The film only works for die hard racing fans.

In real time the 1970 le Mans race was won by jonkheer Gijs van Lennep (NL) and doctor Helmut Marco (D) with such a Porsche - this record stand for 35 years - in 2005 Audi was able to break this record...

The iconic Gulf liveried 917 never won Le Mans except in the Steve McQueen film. Helmut Marko of Red Bull fame won Le Mans in a Porsche 917.

I crashed out watching Joe Rogan.. 😂😂😂😂 It looked a hell of a lot more dangerous the drivers all running like that to the cars then straight into the battle for positions.... Have you seen the new Ford vs Ferrari ?? I've only seen some UA-cam clips so far but it looks a great movie....

*Le Mans 1969:* Belgian driver *Jacky Ickx,* of all people, is the one person/driver who put an end to the running starts of the Le Mans 24hr race, protesting the dangerous tradition simply walking across the track while everyone else ran to their cars (there is not only famous photos of this event, but video as well).
Ickx's regards on the matter was easily proven:
      1) not long after the start a privateer in a 917, John Wolfe, managed to get himself killed (from not fastening a seatbelt) in a crash during the start lap.
      2) *Ickx on the other hand, gave the modified GT40 it's last victory in a mere 100 meters* in front of the 2nd place car, the factory Porsche 908 driven by Hans Herman (who would win the event the following year in a 917).
      3) Ford vs Ferrari is nothing more than a mere gear-head fantasy that is full of falsehoods and dubious fables. Making Ken Miles out as if he was some sort of incredible Jim Clark type of driver - of which he was far from - was a serious mistake produced by anyone who was involved in that nonsense storyline BS contributed in that movie.
*There was only ONE Jim Clark in those days.* Mechanical failure not withstanding, he was regarded as almost invincible - in F1 racing, Indianapolis, Tasman Series and so on.
*Ken Miles was NO Jim Clark; that's it and that's that.*
