This article will explore the then and now of the Little Rascals, focusing on the actors' lives and the lasting impact of the series. Back then, the Little Rascals was groundbreaking for its time. The series featured children from various ethnic and social backgrounds, breaking racial barriers and stereotypes. Notable characters included Billie "Buckwheat" Thomas, George "Spanky" McFarland, Matthew "Stymie" Beard, Billy "Froggy" Laughlin, Eugene "Porky" Lee, and Carl "Alfalfa" Switzer, among others. These actors made a significant impact on viewers, and their performances have become iconic.
After leaving the show, many of the actors pursued different career paths. Some, like Sidney Kibrick and Eugene Lee, left Hollywood and sought more traditional lives, while others continued their acting careers in various capacities. Tragically, several cast members met untimely deaths, such as Carl Switzer and Billy Laughlin. Some actors, like Matthew Beard, faced personal struggles but ultimately turned their lives around, using their experiences to help others.
In the years since the Little Rascals series ended, the show has retained its popularity and nostalgic charm. The characters and their antics continue to be celebrated through fan conventions, reunions, and tribute events. The series has also inspired modern adaptations, like the 1994 film "The Little Rascals," which introduced the characters to a new generation.
Today, the Little Rascals remains a beloved part of American culture, cherished for its heartwarming stories and the talented young actors who brought the characters to life. As one of the last surviving cast members, Sidney Kibrick serves as a reminder of the enduring impact the series has had on audiences for nearly a century.

Buck wheat nd al f
My favorite kids were Froggy,Darla, Stymie, Buckwheat,Spanky and Porky
Buckwheat otay!😅
I like the liberal way in which you worked in Buckwheats “transition” from girl to boy (sarcasm).
Porkey who in real life was Gordon Lee was not only a good friend but was my high school History teacher for two years
Very interesting, thank you so much for sharing your life story! Glad to know that you're good friends with Gordon. Be safe and have a great weekend ❤❤
So you were at Broomfield High when he was the teacher? That's awesome!
Hard to imagine Porky as a history teacher
Cool!!!
@@JeanmarieRod It's easier than imagining him as an English teacher!
I watched them in the 60s and 70s. They used to show them before the main movies would start, as shorts. Then, in the 70s, they would show them on saturday mornings. I LOVED those shows. They were some of the best comedy I have ever watched. THEY WERE ICONS!!
Absolutely, we feel the same way! Thank you for sharing your sentiments and for watching our content. Who is your favorite cast?
@@FactsVerse I really enjoyed ALL of them for the comedy they brought to the table. If I had to pick just one, it would be Spanky.. He basically grew up on "The Little Rascals" and on "Our Gang".
The Little Rascals were also on Saturday morning in the late 50’, early 60’s….I told my mother about them and she told me all about how she used to see them at the Saturday movies when she was a kid. She was born in November of 1925. Those fantastic Our Gang/Little Rascals have been entertaining children for one heck of a long time! I still love them and I am 75 now!
@@nancycurtis488 Yes they are....:-))
One great thing about growing up in the 70's is we were exposed to all these classic shows. We watched the Little Rascals, Tarzan, Laurel and Hardy, Abbot and Costello and of course the Three Stooges! As I recall Saturday's were for cartoons and Sunday's were for all these incredible shows, loved growing up in the 70's!
Remember when you couldn't get breakfast at McDonald's after 10:30 am? After 11 am you couldn't get a good cartoon back in the 70s either.
Tarzan played by Ron Ely was an awesome show.
Impossible to pick just one favorite. They were an ensemble team and worked perfectly together.
Just what I was thinking.
I AGREE ! I BELIEVE THST THEY WERE THE BEST, YOUNGEST COMBINED BEST ACTORS IN THE HISTORY OF FILM !!!
We watched the little rascals for years as children & adults and loved them all. It's a loss that they're not aired any more on tv. Such a shame to lose that special part of history!
Alfalfa: "Where for art thou my Juliet?"
Buckwheat: "Here I is!"
Now we have cam Newton carrying on his hair legacy!
One of my favorite lines.
Alfalfa: 🎶"Hear the echo, yooo hooo" 🎶The frog: "Ribbit, Ribbit."🎶
@@gpwcowboy That was Alfalfas "personality." 😎

Growing up as a kid I loved the little rascals I only wish they would put them on during the holidays for a marathon I have all their DVDs they were the best no racial profiling back then it was good clean fun I miss it so much
True. The show was remarkably progressive for its time. The main black kids - Stymie and Buckwheat - were treated as equals among their peers. They were not condescended to or talked down to. In fact, I recall they were often leaders among the group.
We're happy to know that you love the show. In your opinion, what is its best episode?
Agreed. Wholesomely honest & none of the political correctness running rampant nowadays.
What are you complaining about? At least today we have "Baby Shark".
@@tomsmith2013
You know, it took me until yesterday - after God-knows how long of incessant torture - to finally get that song out of my head. Now it's back.
Thanks, Tom - thanks a f*ckin' lot.
All of them are my favorites.
Use to watch these as a kid in the 60's and 70's....and will watch them again any chance I get.
Still brings out laughs, even after watching them way over 100 times.

The International Silver String Submarine Band !!
my favorite episode featured Miss Crabtree and the boy who felt the pangs of guilt at being expelled and told himself, "Learn that Poem, Learn that poem." that was the most emotional of any of the episodes and i remember it with tearful heartfelt joy.
I remember when I was in kindergarten and Darla and Jackie Cooper came to my school. They showed us a few episodes of "our gang" and, us kids had a great time! I wish we could do that for our kids nowadays. I ended up naming my daughter Darla ❤.
My late mother's name was Darla, and when my sister and I were little we convinced ourselves that she was the Darla in "Little Rascals".She was the right age and there actually was a resemblance!Mom played along with it for a while, but we eventually realized the truth.
@@debra1363 that's an adorable story. 🙏🏼❤️ . We kinda did that same thing lol! When I was around 12-13 years old, my mom was a waitress and I looked like "Tommy" from that show "Alice" . We had people believing that I was actually the kid who played "Tommy" on the show lol.
I remember watching The Little Rascals . Back in the 50s and 60s . Wish they had them now . Would be a good show . For little kids to watch . I would even watch them now . At 75 years old . Liked all the cast members .😊
in the early 2000's I had the honor to get to know Jerry Schatz (Tucker) while we were fishing off the southern shore of Long Island on a party boat out of Captree State Park. Jerry and a few of his friends, all veterans of WWII, were regular guys and Jerry in particular I came to know as a good hearted, kind and friendly man, the kind you enjoy meeting on a fishing trip. His wife Myra would often send along a cake for us all to share and I always looked forward to seeing Jerry and his pals when I was out for a day of fishing. Jerry had lived a good life, an American life, he was the kind of man my dad would have loved to meet as they both had similar professional interests and both loved fishing. The acting role I remember Jerry for the most was the new, rich kid in the neighborhood with the fancy red fire engine. That and the young boy riding on the foot of a wooden soldier in Babes in Toyland with Laurel and Hardy, my dad's favorite movie as a young teenager. I kept in touch with Jerry for a few years after he stopped coming out to fish but as he progressed in years we were unable to continue that friendship. The one thing I remember about Jerry was that he was deeply in love with his wife Myra. Later on as her illness progressed you could see the pain in Jerry's eyes if someone asked about her. I don't remember Jerry ever saying an unkind word about anyone. You are missed Jerry, I pray that you and Myra are together in each other's love and that your spirit goes on in your children. Thank you for bringing a smile to my life.
Love this show to this day. Good old fashioned comedy! Thank you for the great upload! 😊
I loved Buckwheat.

Buckwheat and loved the black children.
As MGM retained the rights to the Our Gang trademark after buying the series, the Roach-produced sound Our Gang films were re-released to theaters and syndicated for television under the title The Little Rascals. So they were “Our Gang” in theaters, and “The Little Rascals” on TV.

Fun trivia: apparently, the kid who played Alfalfa was wondering why they were always having him sing songs on the show when, even he knew, he couldn't actually sing. The boy who played Butch told him it wasn't his singing - it was the faces he made while he was singing.
I always liked that story - it rings true.
Very interesting, thank you so much for sharing this trivia! Be safe and have a great weekend ♥
The fact was that he had a very good voice and he and his brother had a professional singing act before he became a little rascal. It was just funnier when he sang off key.
Oh promise me!! 🎵
Alfalfa was my favorite next to Spanky❤️
@@emmitstewart1921
As I recall, the story was related by Butch himself in an interview many decades after the show.
Also, I suspect that Alfalfa's "singing" act had as much to do with his faces and his enthusiasm more than his "talent."
Watched them everyday before and after school. Still remember most of their iconic , funny lines like " come on Algebra, this is no place for you! .And Norman who was totally enamored by Miss Crabtree. " OH Miss Crabtree. You lay heavy on my heart". And " learn that poem"!. Some things you just never forget.
"Miss Crabtree you're even prettier than Miss Mcgillicuty." 😎
The Little Rascals/Our Gang one of the greatest programs on re-run tv in the early 1960's that I watched as pre-teen!

I got Spanky’s autograph in the 80’s when he was at Tower Records in NYC.

My favorite rascal was Stymie. I especially enjoyed the episode where he was baking a birthday cake with surprises inside. A hairbrush , mousetrap, hot water bottle and suspenders. Hilarious!
Jerome Schatz lived in Copaigue NY. Had the great pleasure to meet him in his home. Jerry was a spry guy when I met him in 2014. I never thought in my wildest imagination I would meet a Little Rascal in his own home. He signed the same photo shown in your video. Thanks.

I loved them all & i think they were some of the greatest actors & actresses ever! Their timing & chemistry was flawless! Even though racism was more prominent in those days,I didn’t see it in the way the kids got a long with each other which confirms the fact that racism isn’t something one is born with, but instead, it’s a learned behavior. Stymie later played Otis Little John on Sanford and Son,one of my favorite episodes is A little extra security, where Grady thinks he's is trouble when a man from the IRS comes to the house,so he fakes a respiratory condition and has Otis pretend to be his doctor who listens to his lungs, but when the man is only there to present Grady with a check his condition miraculously improves, Otis..what about my fifteen dollars?Grady...what fifteen dollars? I auditioned for the part of Little Ricky Riccardo, I Love Lucy as seen in my profile picture taken by Olen Mills studio in Philly. The part couldn't be filled by Desi Arnes Jr, Lucille Ball said NO and that was it. Although Keith Tibidouex was hired for the role he told me stories of his visits to the Ball/Arnes mansion being filled with arguments and turmoil as Lucy and Desi didn't live in the same part of the house! Keith Tibidouex aka Little Ricky was a phenomenal drummer that is one (major) reason I wasn't going forward with a possible career. A couple of Department store clothing ads (Holidays were shoo-in) your pay was the clothing you wore for the ad and a little bragging right around the neighborhood. Retired in Florida, not surprised.

The sad part about the teasing people did about Buckwheat's so-called "speech impediment" - particularly the famous Eddie Murphy sketch was that his character only stumbled with words when he was very little and would pal around with Porky because they looked to be about the same young age! In later episodes of the 1940s Our Gang titled shorts he spoke just as well as the other kids!
We absolutely agree! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. Be safe and have a great weekend!
Oh-tay
Alot of little kids stumble with words. Nothing unusual and totally not "racist". The entire program was not racist. Blacks hung around with whites, all had odd quirks and were equals
That Eddie Murphy sketch was entertaining to say the least. I don't think it would go over with younger audiences today, though.
And his appearance was as many deep south blacks looked. At least they put shoes on him as many deep south blacks, and whites for that matter, went barefoot. Funny how no one considers the portrayal of hillbillies as controversial.
The most unique character had to be "Froggy" ... it didn't matter what he said just the sound of that voice coming from a little kid made me laugh out loud. It always hurt my throat trying to copy that gravelly tone but I can do it easily now.🐸
It's a shame that he died really really young 16 years old from a car accident of all things😢 He really never got a chance to live his life to the fullest
So sad that most died young. My favorite was Spanky. And my favorite episode was the one when the gang helps a boy make a cake to sell so that he can buy a dress for his neglected mom. The cake makes the hilarious sound, "Weet Whoa! Weet Whoa!" from all the junky ingredients the kids put in it. And the dress the boy his mom buys is out of style, but she wears it anyway, much to the chagrin of her horribly unappreciative, unloving husband. I'd love to see that episode again.
And one kid finds a comb in that hot mess of a cake and combs his hair with it. 😅
I was born in 1946. In the 50s different parts of the country had children's television local shows. In Atlanta we had one that was called The Clubhouse Gang headed by "Officer" Don Kennedy who went on to be a well thought of person in television history in Atlanta. It lasted for a couple of years showing Our Gang videos. Children from around the area would send in requests to be on the show and due to its popularity the waiting list was over a year long. I am believing the reason they didn't continue the program past that time was it infringed on the rights of the company who owned the tapes or the asking price to broadcast them became too high. At that time The Clubhouse Gang show was changed to The Popeye Club for around ten more years. Many of us grew up watching the show and have so many good memories of it.
This is phucking phantastic! Thanks so much for posting this!
Loved the Rascals!!!💫
Spanky was my favorite. I'll always remember the one where he's just a little feller and his Mom was calling him to come and eat. He doesn't answer. So she finds him in another room in their home. She says Spanky what are you doing? He has a tiny pop gun, where the cork pops out, but a string helps Spanky not lose it. Mom, "Spanky, what are you doing?", And he says "big hunting". He was killing roaches on the wall.
"Oh gee medicine oil time again? Oh I gave it to the worms." 😂

You missed Margaret Kerry the other surviving member. She is best known as Disney's original Tinker Bell and her work on The Andy Griffith Show. At 94 years old Margaret is still active celebrating her 90th continuous year in show biz. It all started for her as a Little Rascal.
I did not have a favorite. I loved all of them. they enchanted me and entertained me as a teen with the reruns on weekends. I probably saw just about all of them.
They were shown in the morning on Saturday on a local station. I had seen some here and there growing up but, this was the first time I could see all of the shorts and I loved it.
My mother was an occasional actress on the little rascals. She was the harassed skinny freckle face girl in the school classroom with the big glasses and pigtails. She is a redhead but that doesn't show in the series. Today she is 87. Lots of pictures in her photo albums. Later she played in the black and white movie, "Tomorrow The World". James Drury the lead actor of "The Virginian" proposed to her but she declined. She had 3 children but raised 7 through her last marriage.
In the late 1970's in Los Angeles California I was living in an apartment building on Poinsettia near Sunset Blvd. An elderly woman neighbor I talked to on occasions mentioned that she had been married until his death to the second Chubby the one with the black non-curly hair.

Nice to hear that several eventually joined the military when they grew up. Thanks for serving, brothers! (I'm a Navy vet myself) ⚓
Thank you for your service, God Bless 🙏
@@Dasettabrook I'm glad that I was able to. Most of the males in my family have served in the military since at least 1916.
Great subject thanks❤.
You forgot Farina! She was a little older than Buckwheat. My favorite character is all of them but if I had to choose one, it would be Petey, their dog! You forgot him too. 😉❤❤❤
