  • INS Vikrant, nation's first indigenous aircraft carrier was commissioned into the Indian Navy today. At ThePrint Off The Cuff, Ashley J. Tellis, Senior Fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, told Shekhar Gupta that India needs to decide if its geopolitical objectives are confined to the sea areas around the peninsula or extends beyond, to determine if the country needs aircraft carriers. Andamans &Car Nicobar islands with airbases located on them enables India’s Air power to influence deep into Bay of Bengal and Southeast Asia. So in a limited way the group of these islands serve the same role as an aircraft carrier. What We really need is aircraft carriers in Arabian Sea where both Chinese and Pakistan Navies are active and we are opening our vital trade route to Europe through Iranian ports to Caspian Sea and beyond into Russia and Europe.

The debate of actual requirement of an AC is a continuous process instead of an event. As we have built the 40000T AC, the theory emerges that 65000T AC alone will serve the purpose. If we build the 65000T AC, another theory will emerge to the effect that only the 100000T AC will do. And so on.
All we can visualise is that this 40000T AC is a technology demonstrator to proclaim that we can do the job of building an AC. Graduating from 40000T AC to 65000T AC to 100000T AC will be relatively easy. That is the crux of the matter.
    Good day to all.

India always projected it self as a blue water naval doctrine beyond its current maritime boundary .This started way back when Rajiv Gandhi was PM with the induction of Soviet Tu-142MK-E aircraft from March 1988 to March 2017 (29 years). The aircraft were retired on 27 March 2017 during a ceremony held at the INS Rajali air base. They were replaced with the Boeing P-8 Poseidon aircraft. They had a combat range of 6000 km truelu much more than 1000km what Tellis suggested .
Why India can't build aircraft carriers upto speed like China and no new shipyard for construction .Think we need Nitin Gadkari kind of mentality to speed up production of aircraft carriers and submarines and more budget to Navy and cut some of Army budget on wasteful expense on non military expense like golf course at various cantonments.

@saud India has built its IAC in 13 years, that is by no means slow speed! 10 years is the least ANY nation takes today to build a carrier. Instead our speed is impressive given we had to develop a lot of tech. ourselves.
P8i is no carrier based aircraft. It is a submarine hunter. But, as Tellis said if we have aims beyond 8000 kms of range from coast, then we must have carrier. Tu-142 MK-E or Poseidon does not make us blue water navy as both planes cannot land of any aircraft carrier. Instead these planes are long range hunters but still are NOT an instrument for Blue water navy. ONLY true blue water navy today are
      1. US
      2. France
      3. UK (about to induct the most advanced and 1Lakh tonne Carrier)
Russia, China are not true blue water navies as of today. They can send warships but they cant truly project powers. China will be in next 2-3 years.
What we need is nuclear powered 100000 Ton IAC 3 with Emals. Then only we'll have true ability to project power beyond 8-10000 kms.

An aircraft carrier is a huge floating platform packed with sophisticated arms, ammunition and other force multipliers like aircrafts which are not only capable of attacking the enemy but also more importantly capable of defending itself . It would be a colossal waste of money ,effort and human lives if this humongous piece of machinery is not lethal and powerful enough to simply take care of itself primarily .

    • @rajendrajasathy4356
      @rajendrajasathy4356 Рік тому +1

It can take care, but then it needs assistance. It is huge, its maneuverability is limited in relation to frigates or other small ships, so it needs some guards. Its purpose is not to fight directly but to provide a land base sort of platform to other fighters - frigates, planes, submarines etc. So it can carry humans, ammunition, fuel, a factory to repair weapons.

The navy’s Vice Chief of Staff Vice Admiral SN Ghormade clarified : "It might take another 1 Year for INS Vikrant to be combat ready. By definition, the Carrier will have the galaxy of combat jets which could carry out sorties and the warship will be equipped with surface to air missiles. this would be completed by mid-2023. Also, the deck integration trials of fixed wing aircraft and exploitation of its Aviation Facility Complex (AFC), which is the core of combat capability would commence next year."

Aircraft Carriers, in today’s day and age, will have very limited utility against a powerful and technologically advanced country like China. If anything, it is a giant target that can get obliterated in short order in this age of precision and powerful drones/missiles. Imagine how deflating it would be for the morale if it were to be sunk in the event of a real conflict with such adversaries - much worse than Argentina’s General Belgrano moment in the Falklands war, I would imagine.
It probably will have some utility if the adversary were the failed state on our west.

What will india fly from it's aircraft carriers, when all of india's fighter jets are imported? what is india's anti-submarine warfare capability to send out a $5-$6 billion Vikrant out into the open ocean? What is india's anti-ship missile defense capability? Moskva was taken out by a single precision missile by the Ukrainians. While India needs 3-4 ACs to cover the Indian Ocean against China, the following facts greatly hinder it:
1 - The IAF has a terrible shortage of modern aircraft & needs to be FIXED FIRST _(Russian jets are terrible, we still fly MIG-21s, the Jaguar is literally falling apart & Tejas is underpowered)._ There's no point talking about projecting power beyond 1,000 miles when India cannot protect its borders against the Chinese and Pakistan air forces
2 - The Indian Navy should prioritize large numbers of submarines to keep the Chinese Navy away (far more cheaply than ACs)
3 - The MIG-29s on the current ACs are dreadful, the ACs are too small to be of much use as a fighting force & India simply does not have enough support vessels for its ACs. (The total cost to create a powerful force of ACs is well beyond India's budget at the moment)

Mere $100M modification would be much better than $5B AC. India does not need to act like a power projecting nation i.e. beyond Pakistan and little bit east of andaman nicobar islands we do not need to send plane to engage. Missiles with several thousand km ranges are good enough if needed for long distance hits like North or East China. A n0nsense discussion as usual.
A guest who has no clue about India's current power projection in the high seas or did he choose to be ignorant about it?
Any student who is following current affairs would be aware of the length and breadth of Indian Navy's current activities which literally stretches from Hawaii to Brazil.
And the host as usual sucks at strategic matters.
The librandus and the lefts are unable to digest the fact that India is projecting naval power.
How can this so called 'expert' be so naive about the value and impact of a country's geographical location in naval or maritime power projection??
How can US Navy and Indian Navy have the same doctrine?
US doesn't have any conflict nearshore. But India has.
If the area of influence is from Hawaii to Brazil, then there are dozens of friendly countries for port calls by IN ships. A 7500km range in a single refuel cannot be called insufficient.
The current availability of the Mig-29Ks are between 65%-70% due to the extensive improvements done by HAL and IN. And this expert had no clue about that.

Surely he is not wiser than American foreign policy advisors and the bipartisan support India gets for its role in INDO PACIFIC, besides Indias own IOR security concern. Does he expect India to stay behind is guns on land and watch china dominate India sea lanes and threaten India from everywhere. Is it a deliberate down grading Indias interest and importance or ignorance of the Indo pacific scenario? Even the analysis is poor and Sharon of important considerations.
