We need to get this blade heat treated and then lots of grinding to make the Serenity Dagger FLAT! Once we are done with all of that we can move on to making the blood groove, also known as a fuller. We had a lot of fun making this vid with a lot of funny moments.

I asked a question farther down but thought I’d drop
It here too. I’m really curious. Does the steel experience the leidenfrost effect when you quench it? Is that why you move it up and down?
Are you taking any custom orders?
If so, how do we order?
Kyle, your attention to detail blows me away, it's so satisfying. I do all of my crafting in wood, not metal, but the idea is the same: all those little things add up.
A true craftsman like yourself is not afraid to "give away his secrets" because the challenge is actually putting those secrets. Your videos are educational as well as mesmerizing, I fear I won't be able to stop.
Here's a tip to get a cleaner cut when using a ball nose end mill. Tilt the head about 10-15° and the cutting radius scoops out the center of the groove instead of having the center of the ball nose where the SFPM is essentially zero. Of course you'll need to tram the head back to vertical, but it's no big deal with the proper indicator setup.
As long as the depth of cut is less than the radius of the end mill, both starts and stops of the fuller will appear the same.
Just try it side buy side on a piece of aluminum and you'll see the difference. Straight up Vs leaned over.
Definitely a very great tip. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the tip! I definitely want to try it out next time I use a ball end mill, sounds like it would help a lot. -Kyle
When you're dad stepped out of the camera frame at 7:55 and smiled at you. What a good guy and great family working together to make beautiful pieces of art. This is exciting and I can't wait to see how it comes out.
Lmao, the reenactment of changing the speeds on the other older milling machine. Was too darn accurate 🤣. Minus the throwing of tools out of frustration hahaha
that happy father's face at 7.59)He is really proud of you Kyle!
Lmao. The confetti but killed me. Holy cow. The cancer warning in California was perfect
Yes I like watching knife making videos and you are exceptional at it, but it's not the main reason I watch this channel.
It truly is relaxing to watch someone go to such lengths to make something so perfect and exact
When Kyle says "very close" he is working on an entirely different scale than me. When he says it he means "undetectable by the naked eye".
Edit:
"Knifemaker's confetti is known to cause cancer or even death to the state of California". Unintended consequence of that law is that now the warning is so ubiquitous that it is entirely ignored.
Was just about to go to bed. What's another 25 minutes for a fellow kyle
'Blood groove' is a pet peeve of mine.
It's a joy to watch you make these beautiful blades. It also doesn't hurt that you're silly at times!
Lmao "coffee break... resume staring..." cracked me up
You boys are such dorks! I can totally relate! Thank you so much! The world is so much better than the media would have us believe. I appreciate you more than you know. My brain can occasionally go in directions I'd prefer it not go. Watching you guys always brings a smile to my face.
That knifemaker confetti segment was pure gold 🤣🤣
I need one ton of knife makers confetti, please!😂😂😂😂
You guys should do a super edit of just every time you've said "coffee break"
I'd watch the whole thing.
3 legged pooch 🥺 I need to hug the pooch! 🥺🤗☺️
A comedic tutorial! Now that is what I like!
Congrats on the new mill. You and your family really are a treasure to the knife making world. Thanks for taking us along.
3 legged dog walks into a Forge...
"I'm look'n for the man who shot my Paw!!!"
Mrs says I need a case of the confetti, lol much love fellas
I love fullers on every blade! Blood groove!! Hahaha! A buddy and myself joke about that all the time...
I'm always excited for new videos of your builds, the attention to detail is always inspiring
The catchup joke reminded me of dumb n dumber haha classic. And that confetti infomercial was hilarious 😂
Looks like you clamped parralels to your machine table and most likely alligned with a dial gauge. If precicion machines did not change significantly than the T-slots should be parallel to your machine bed (at least it was 47 years ago when I did my apprenticeship as a tool and die maker). It is clearly visible that the inside „walls“ of the slots are ground. You should get a set of blocks that exactly/snuggly fit the with of the slots. That plus a set of narrow (maybe 10 mm) parallels will get your blade perfectly aligned to you machine bed without measuring and fiddling around. The small flat sport just need to be snug to those parallels, a couple of light taps with a copper bar will do this.
Can‘t wait to see the next video.
When you finish a part of the blade like the fuller in this case, but still have a bunch of work to do on the rest of the blade, you can use nail polish to protect the finish of the fuller and then just remove it with some acetone when you’re finally done
*hits pause*
*stares for a bit*
*resumes play*
10:29 Nice shot!
Long, pokey daggers are the best kind of daggers. The kind that can be used as a short sword if necessary. This should turn out to be a very beautiful dagger, though you'll have to be quite careful with your temper and how you grind in the bevels leading to the point to avoid it immediately snapping off when you test it. It'll have to be one of those daggers that isn't actually as thin as it looks.
bro i laughed so hard with the knife maker confetti
knifemakers confetti 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
in addition to your incredibly goo / beautiful craftsmanship, I also enjoy your humor immensely! greetings from The Netherlands
Nice to see what mussolini is doing these days.
whating kyle make knifes only makes me appreciate the BladeSmiths of old even more impressive!
Teh amount of knowledge they must have had, as well as the ability to execute it with flawless execution... amazing
I lost it at the confetti part. It's a good thing I am the only person in the office today, or I would have looked like a fool.
Can I just say how well versed this guy is. He does blacksmithing, machining, content creation, you name it. And he is skilled in it all. It's common to find someone who is skilled in one thing, but rare to find someone who is skilled in many things. Keep up the good work!
The dagger is coming along great. I'm really impressed with the stops you ground in to both ends. Genius.
Go Team Royer!
P.S. Confetti for $9.99 Gotta have it 🤣
This channel has quickly become a favorite of mine. Brilliant!
Great tip with the flexible rod! Hand sanding fullers is always a pain. On the warp, I’ve moved to locking knives in my aluminum plate vice after quenching while it’s still hot. 90% of the time the warp is gone. 👍
Great work as usual. Your video's is always watch of the week for me.
Finally! Another man who knows the best place to store ketchup is in a milling machine.
Always excellent, clever move creating datum points!
Looking awesome! Would love to see you do a damascus plug weld on a blade one of these days 👍
Kyle, tu es un génie !!!!! Merci pour ta bonne humeur qui fait un bien fou !!!!😂😂
Staring and thinking can be the hardest part.
12:42 Help step-pully, I'm stuck!
That thin rod and drill with the paper to sand fullers is very handy to know
Also a commendation on your choice of kiln colours, none of that basic black, sign me up for crazy cat lady purple!
Most talented master smith…. God bless you and your family. Tnx for sharing this Good luck
love this channel and the content you do.
Amazing process!!!
You are a genius.
Amazing talent!
Hi Kyle, you are Picaso in blacksmith! WOW! I saw all of your videos, All of those are Excellent!
I want to subscribe to a monthly subscription to knife maker's confetti.
I made a Fighter Knife and did a hollow grind instead of the flat ground turned out really good. The knife collector was very pleased with it. I did walrus ivory handles on it turned out beautiful. You can do hollow ground on Fighter knives just work slow.
btw, youtube began me at episode 3 of this series and it's looking good.
can't wait for this masterpiece to be finished as well!
I just wanted to let you know that I think you are very talented. You have skill and experience. You are also quite the artist 🎨 as well. I love your art work.
I expected the Starship Enterprise to land in the workshop for a refit !!!!!!!!
Congratulations about your new milling machine kyle!!
Hey thanks Ricardo
Kyle... You are too much sir! As.I sat here watching, & chuckling as you.tossed your newest product in the air? J
Having a milling machine makes things so much easier... I have to mill my groves by hand with Dremel tool and diamond ball bits... Lose focus for even a second and you end with uneven grove :P
Kyle, your work is amazing, but I would love to see you turn your powers to evil. Your stuff looks like the weapons of heroes, but perhaps you should make a villain's weapon sometime???
Love your vid 👍👍
... Hi.
Your blades are among the
Best others!...
Just waiting on my homie to get his forging stuff, then I'm buying that Knifemaker course you've got going. It looks incredibly detailed and thorough based on the video and all of your youtube videos I've seen. I hope there's a baller sale like this going on at that point, though I'm prepared to pay full price for it when the time comes.
Love the videos! I'm not a blacksmith in any way, shape or form and you've made me interested in the craft and a bit excited for my buddy to get his set-up going.
Nice milling machine!!!!!!
15:17 ish but you went in dry! *_you mustn't forget the lube_* um, I mean cutting fluid. lmao.
What an advert in the end 😂
Seeing damascus makes me wonder if there are ancient daggers or swords that have a pattern like this but archaeologists have been too scared to reveal
Amazing 👏
Just wow!
Serenity is like Sting's little sister
might be a stupid idea but what about sand blasting the groove? it would also create a cool "bicolor" pattern, as the groove would be matte and the rest of the blade would be shiny
Don't get me wrong, I'm not against it, but it's funny to hear "hand sanding with a drill" at 17:00.
the master brain make a master dagger 💪🇳🇴
Very informative video, thoroughly enjoyed it 👍. Love your sense of humour, that blade is really looking good. Regards from Down Under.
P.S. I’ll take 2 jars of “Knifemakers Confetti “, please send ASAP 😂.
Ever try putting that oil in the freezer ? Know it won’t freeze but I’m sure it I’ll damn freeze that blade 😂
Love it😂
I'm curious as to the amount of orders you may receive for confetti 🤣
0:58 doggo's leg gone missing. Seems to get along, though!
you are such a strange strange badass, and it's strange even writing that sentence XD
Super job super Boy
France
Muito bom !
You are the best of the best knife maker my friend I have a dream to get one of your peace of art that you made😔
I clicked on this video due to the thumbnail - I was going to slap you around the head for using the term blood groove. I am so glad that I do not need to. The fuller is important to help stiffen such a pointed blade. You may never cut something with this, but you will be able to drive this through many things.
Also the knife makers confetti ad was brilliant- you get a like for that.
You know what I'd love to see...I'd love to see royer take a buck 119 stock model so, 420 HC, and the harbor freight knock off...and do the extreme knife text and comparison...that would be so cool and I would even be willing to use my employee discount to get the 119 to him...
Kyle, your wuite the charmer. It’s really funny and educating at the same time. And can I buy those confetti and have them sent to Denmark?
Looks like I'm not going to sleep just yet😁
I think that was a really cool trick with milling notches on the blade end and tang! Where did you discover that idea? It's neat to see all your tools and machines, too. I hollow grind my blades out on a little 1" X 30" that I've set upside down in a large vise. (Takes awhile, but it's fun!)
18:40 rip billy mays
Does the steel experience the Leidenfrost effect when you quench it in the oil? Is that why you’re moving it up and down?
I’m surprised you didn’t get a dro for your mill, it’s not necessary but certainly a nice to have.
Funny you should say so. Have one since January. Dad hasn’t had time to install it yet because he has been working on his ABS journeyman smith presentation knives. Getting right on it after BLADE Atlanta June 2-4. And a high temp salt heat treat tank and a low… And…
Flame on my friend
Dad
@@KyleRoyerKnives haha, that makes sense! Good luck with your knives and everything else!
I want my 2 Jars of confetti.
Нello from Ukraine. I love to watch your channel, there are a lot of interesting things here. I also do some knife work myself.
Kyle my man, you should lift your whole workshop up at least 30cm to not get chronic back injuries 😅
Did you do anything to the fuller to protect it during the rest of the project? For example painting the inside with nail polish?
I can finally afford one of kyles products!!!!!!!! Please can you send me a glass of knife makers konfetti. That's cooler than a flattened nail from the hardware store
lol
Awesome videos. But gotta ask, where does the money come from that allows you to buy all these tools and afford such a shop?
Have you tried a 1/4" round EDM stone in a drill for sanding the fuller?
Kraton points too,
