The opinions presented do not necessarily reflect the opinions of FOBBV.
Both Jackie and Shadow visit the nest this evening, ahead of the impeding storm.
Although unclear, it looks like Shadow accidentally stepped on one of the eggs and may have breached it.
At 4:00 in the video, Jackie consumes the contents of at least one of the remaining eggs. No development is visible inside: only yellow yolk sac, viscous liquid (albumen) and membranes, no blood vessels on the membranes.
The last (third) egg may or may not still remain in the nest. Jackie and Shadow have been aerating vigorously around the eggs and deepened the bowl considerably. They both visited the nest tonight and were seen together on the SDS.
This chapter of Jackie and Shadow’s story is ending and soon a new one will begin. Their eggs will sustain various forms of life as nature continues to take care of nature.
One egg was broken on 4/11 and disappeared (possibly disintegrated) in the bowl. It is unclear if there was any development inside
Video of the events: • FOBBV🦅Nature Takes Car...
🥚Jackie and Shadow are letting go of their unhatched eggs and continue their incubation withdrawal process. Jackie was last seen incubating on 4/8, Shadow - on 4/11.
We have no way of knowing why the egg did not hatch. It could be environmental, such as temperatures, humidity percentages, oxygen levels at high altitude, etc. It could be biological with something just being off at the time the eggs were created. It is very unlikely that either Jackie or Shadow are infertile since they have already had 2 sets of chicks together - in 2019 and 2022.
ℹResident Bald Eagle male: Shadow (unbanded) since May 2018. Estimated hatch year: 2014
ℹResident Bald Eagle female: Jackie (unbanded) since September 2016. Estimated hatch year: 2012

Not judging her…..she’s doing what mama eagles do to make sure no one else can eat her babies. It just wasn’t even in my thought wheel house, but neither was the care she gave to providing cover.
This is my first experience watching eagles period. Nonetheless, incubating eggs.
What I do know is she has proven to be an exceptional mother as has Shadow the dad in being extra vigilant in keeping the eggs warm and protective against such extreme weather, that what she is doing now I have no doubt is her instinct to keep eggs from being eaten by predators and to leave her eggs consumed by her. I’m sure she might be doing this to help Shadow grief.
What a wonderful and heartbreaking journey we have been allowed to watch!

Even though this is the latest development for Jackie and Shadow, I am relieved that all of us are moving forward. When she buried the eggs the other day, I was confused, but it was her way of saying "It's time to move on." Animals have emotion. They have small souls, but still feel deeply like we do. By her ingesting the eggs or egg, she is clearing a path to a brighter future. Shadow has had a hard time these last 2 years. He is younger than Jackie, but is more sensitive. They have been mating, so maybe we might have another clutch. Don't get me wrong, I am deeply saddened by what has happened and we all can grieve for them and with them. They are young and I am praying for them, for all of us in this crazy world. When we watch them, life is so much simpler and we realize that none of us are meant to suffer. In God's World, we are meant to thrive. They are young and healthy and we should be happy just for those very reasons. God Bless Us, Everyone.❤❤❤❤

The eggs could be unfertilized. Eagles are not humans and they don't have the same thoughts and feelings as humans. That doesn't mean they have _no_ feelings, but they are not the same as humans. For example, In another nest, an inexperienced eagle father unfortunately killed and ate the eaglet when the mother left for a little while. When she came back she never looked for her baby, she never looked distraught, she calmly sat and incubated the egg that was left. Don't you think a mother would look for her baby at least? She fed it just a few hours earlier, and then she comes back and it's gone! She showed no signs that she even remembered she had that baby. That's what people mean when they say eagles dont feel like humans. Eagle mothers will also ignore a small eaglet and even allow it to be pushed out of the nest. Eagles will allow a larger baby to bonk a smaller baby to death. Human mothers don't do that. Eaglets that have survived falling from a nest will be ignored as they scream for food. Their mom and dad will fly right past them. I watch an eagle rescue group and they have saved eaglets that were pushed out of the nest. Again, eagles don't feel like humans. They havefeelings, as all animals do, but some people go too far and imagine things that aren't within the realm of reality about them. Then they are shocked when an eagle eats his baby or they starve one to death. That's why it isn't a good idea to pretend that eagles are no different than humans. Thry are very very different. They are wild animals and they do not feel like humans do.

They do what they do because that's what Mother Nature has taught them. These eggs were NEVER unborn creatures. They were merely omelette ingredients that never developed. There's no need for eagle therapy or "moving-on"; next year they'll probably try again. In the meantime, they'll work on the nest, feast on the fauna and get busy on the roosting tree. The nest has at lteast 12 years of sticks and fluff compacted there. I actually doubt the eggs froze. Their brood patch temp is around 98 degrees and snow is an insulator. Eggs are mostly water until a chick develops and water has a high thermal capacity. They don't freeze instantly and most days the temps weren't that cold. I, too, worry about Jackie - but not because her eggs didn’t hatch. It’s because it looks like she really needed this meal.
With a big storm rolling in, she may have had difficulty spotting fish to catch in the lake. Her crop isn’t bulging like Shadow’s always is - and I fear that arthritic claw of hers makes for difficult fishing.
Shadow never seems to be in want of fish - he’s eaten himself to the brim - to the point where he arrives with a healthy uneaten flank of fish that he gives to Jackie so as to not have the portion go to waste.
The day after this video, Shadow brought a fish to the nest - and Jackie followed him there. She took it from him before he did his usual bow and “passing it over to her” - which smacks of being so hungry she dispensed with the pleasantries. Even after Jackie ate the fish, she looked like she could have benefitted from a few more carp.
There were also a few times over the past month when Jackie was on the nest and making her “food wail” sounds - which to me was an indication she was calling to Shadow to bring her a fresh catch.
Or she may have seen Shadow with a fish and was desperately begging for a share of it. 🥺

You know, who are we as humans to "judge" what animals/birds do? Nature takes care of it's own I think and, they have been nothing but a devoted pair to these eggs... Still, a sad ending, but they are young and have many years (I hope) to try again... Blue skies to Jackie and Shadow stay healthy and we will all be looking forward to next year's clutch... Thank you Cali and all the other FOBBV volunteers for sharing this journey with us...

So much to learn about nature, seeing Jackie do this in order to clear the nest of unviable eggs. I'm so glad to see it was not a formed chick. There was another story I read about at another nest (I think it was in West Virginia) where a father killed and ate an eaglet that had already hatched, I'm not saying this to be morose, but want to learn, is this something that ever happens in the natures cycle in the eagle world, Cali Condor? I've never heard of such a thing. 😢 I hope that for Jackie and Shadow they can move on and stay healthy and thrive, with full hope for a safe Summer and promise to try again for eaglets next year. ❤

    • @mygirldarby
      @mygirldarby Місяць тому +1

There were two nests where male eagles killed and ate their babies this season in nests with cameras. People say it's rare, but two is a lot, considering there aren't that many nests with cameras. How many other nests did it happen that we don't know about? There was a hawk nest where the male killed his baby too this season. There was also a really heartbreaking nest where the parents allowed an aggressive bigger eaglet bonk the smaller one and push him/her away when food came. Thr parents ultimately starved the baby to death. It was horrifying. These animals aren't humans and they do not feel the way humans do. Many people don't understand this.
