We had a 70% tax on the very richest way back in the 50's. Interestingly enough, this was also a period when we had the least amount of wealth disparity in history.
The country came out of a world war. War is a huge stimulus to the economy. Record employment because you need people making guns and munitions. The country is going to take all the money it can from everyone, the rich included and the rich willing, if your whole way of life is under threat. World War 2 was that scenario. Today is not yesterday.
Chulo.. just an fyi.. at the time of the stock market crash of 1928 the highest tax rate on the wealthiest of this country was only 20% (virtually the same as it is today go figure) and this was the beginning of the great depression. When Franklin Delanor Roosevelt took office during the first year or so of the depression he and Congress raised the highest tax rate on the wealthy to over 40%. So by no means was it that WWII was the beginning of taxing the super wealthy. However at time of the USA involvement in WWII was when Congress raised that highest tax rate yet again to 90% and it stayed that high for nearly 40 years until Reagan and Congress in early 1980's began the first round of lowering it.. and it has with help of Trump/Ryan/McConnell and the rest of the Republican party now returned it right back to near 20% just as it was at the stock market crash of 1928. My point was simply that we don't need "war" to increase taxes on they wealthy! Nor do we need "war" to build a strong middle class!
@@VKingMD unemployment at the start of the great depression was even lower than today and the highest tax rate on the wealthy was similar as today at only 20%. Trump has fixed nothing for working class and certainly has not stabilized the economy for the long haul. One bandaid fix after another for decades is what we've seen. The question that many of us will soon realize is just how long we can go... just how much financial inequality can happen before we find ourselves into another recession worse than 2008 or even worse! Perhaps a depression! Like a tornado certain ingredients are needed within a storm to produce one. Any one of the key ingredients not there then it don't happen. Today in 2019 we have so little unemployment, more debt to Americans than ever before, more financial inequality between the upper and lower classes than ever before, a nation with more debt than ever before. With all but 3% of America "working" yet we are nowhere near turning our own debt around yet alone the national debt! We've seen banks "too big to fail" do just that! Like 1929 the year of the stock market crash triggering the great depression we had banks that should be maintaining a stable economy mixing with investment banking which proved to be catastrophic when debt could no longer get repaid. This was seen and realized only afterwards but was resolved by the "Glass Steagall" bill in the 1930 to prevent this risky behavior from the worlds largest banks. Unfortunately this bill was repealed in the 1980's so yet again banks were right back to the same old shit. .. and 2008 it came crashing down!!! And it will again!... maybe not today.. maybe not tomorrow.. but rest assured the ingredients like 1929 are there yet again due to but not limited to policies of Reagan and now Trump. ..cheers!

Without both of them, my life would be very hard and I wouldn't be able to do many things I do. Back when the tax rates were 80 and 90% people like Ford, Dupont, and Carnegie discovered ways to reduce their income that were both good for the country and brilliant. They realised that if you spend the money on the right things, it is no longer income, it is an expense and a deduction. They paid their employees more, and went on to expand and build new factories, they funded hospitals and libraries, and they planned their business not so much for short term profits but for growth. The taxes on the wealthy did not impoverish them (there was graft and scheming lawyers even back then) but rather it did allow our government to do things in the public interest that was previously impossible. Think of the Panama Canal or the Interstate Highway System, our Public School System, medical research, and Universities. There were abuses but there was also a spreading prosperity. Given time the wealthy could still accumulate vast wealth but, the high income tax served to shake the tree so the wealth would shower down on a healthy and growing forest rather than grudgingly trickle down to briefly moisten the soil before being sucked up again to feed the greedy trees. As Mr Trump has said "You gotta take care of the forest floor." Our current tax laws only feeds the damn trees!
GoB: Basically good observations, but the Federal Government isn't responsible for the Public School System or Public Colleges/Univetsities. Those expenditures and decisions are left to the States since they are not specifically powers afforded the Federal Government by The Constitution of the United States of America. Only limited and well-defined purposes exist for Federal Aid to public schools, such as enforcement of the Equal Rights Act, including Title IX.

@@Ciabo69 Actually, tax cuts have not, and never have resulted in significant job creation. Most of the money goes to corporate bonuses, increased stock dividends, etc. Business only create more jobs when they can further profit from it, otherwise they keep the tax break for themselves. This is why the American middle class has shrunk so drastically. We once had the largest middle class in the world, but lost that distinction a few years ago. If the top 10% paid their employees $25.00 an hour, it would reduce crime, more would be more spent on education in small towns, and most people could get out of poverty. Jeff Bezo couldn’t spend that 144 BILLION in 10 lifetimes. That is greed
If employees would make $25 an hour, people would be ready to pay higher prices to get what they want, so prices would go up and no one would be any richer than now. You sound like a violent communist radical/revolutionary. Liberals view a nation's wealth as though it were a pie of a certain size, that is unevenly divided. That is a very incorrect way of looking at it. Wealth is created and when you're hard-working and smart enough, there is no limit as to how much you can make. Someone else getting rich takes absolutely nothing away from you or anybody else, and usually provides better products at cheaper price and a livelihood for more and more people. Much wealth of the rich is put into research and expanding business, resulting in more people being employed. Socialism is a proven failure and just means an equal sharing of poverty.
Are you a total idiot ??? They have been molding your mind with bull shit and you're too stupid to know it??? Your Clinton News Network, Certainly Not News, Communist News Network or whatever else you want to call it is the fake news Marxist Propaganda Station. According to a study done by Yale University they spend 93% of their time bashing Trump. That ain't news. That's propaganda. And what they don't bother to tell you is even worse than what they twist, distort and lie about. For instance, did they ever tell you that Trump wiped out ISIS and retrieved our victory in Iraq that Obama had given away within the 1st year of his presidency. There is also a video on UA-cam that someone secretly took at a CNN board meeting with the program supervisor saying that "That Russian collusion thing is all bull shit, but it sure is good for ratings" . Hannity said "living in excess--I thought that was the American dream." (2:05) Then Brian says "hoarding tens of millions of dollars of wealth," (2:11) but then he adds "and refusing to pay a fair share." When did Hannity say something about avoiding taxes? That part was added by Brian; it's despicable! I don't see honesty and integrity there. I'm not defending Hannity; I'm exposing Brian. One more thing, in order to close the income inequality gap, wouldn't you say poor people must dream about getting richer? This is the land of opportunity, why would Brian take away my dreams of becoming a millionaire?
@@jamescooper3571 first of all, I'm trying to help you (not you specifically, people in general). Listen closely. Brian makes it seem like rich people are despicable. However, financial advisors and motivational speakers warn you about having negative attitudes towards money because then it will be harder to accomplish your financial goals. In addition, everyone (rich or poor) has the right to fight for their very last earned penny. Moreover, you can't blame the government or the rich for not having an extra $400; it's actually your own actions that have caused that. As flawed as it is, our system does allow anyone to move up the ladder, but it's a lot of work! Going back to my original point, Brian is somehow encouraging his audience to remain poor (virtuous and deserving all the help). I rather listen to the guy promoting positive beliefs towards becoming a millionaire. I never said it was taxation that stole my dreams of becoming wealthy. But even if I had said that, and I had to answer your question, then I would say it removes the incentive to work harder.
PJ 18 Tires, I appreciate your civil tone-rare these days. I don’t hear from Brian a message that rich folks are despicable. And I don’t think that many people think rich people are despicable. I’m rich myself, and my beloved uncle is way richer than I am. Where my uncle and I would both disagree with you is in your assessment on climbing the ladder. It’s indescribably more difficult for some people to climb it than for others. We believe that in a country as rich as America, any adult willing to work his or her ass off for 40 hours a week or more should live a comfortable life. But untold millions work their asses off and have inadequate housing, healthcare, drive unsafe cars. Where my uncle and I agree with Brian is that if you’re making $10 million a year, you’ve got some nerve whining about a higher tax on income above $10 million. Our nation makes your wealth possible. You aren’t going to be making $10 million+ if you live in Bangladesh. You owe, and you owe plenty, to the great nation that made your wealth possible. Taxes as a disincentive to work harder? Do you not see a bit of a problem with a system in which I make more money sitting on my ass doing nothing than I do from my job, which is more of a hobby? Finally, Brian isn’t talking about millionaires. He’s talking about the 18,000 super rich. To their credit, many of the super rich get it, and never whine about their taxes. But many are also just overwhelmed with greed, and a lack of appreciation for our nation and responsibility to ensure at least a semblance of equal OPPORTUNITY for everyone. If you think your chances of getting ahead are or ever were remotely the same as mine, then you are naive. In sum: if I have to pay more in taxes so some hard working guy or mom has a better chance to get ahead, I’m all for it, so long as that’s the case for everyone in my position.
@@jamescooper3571 1. you're welcome--same to you, too. 2. sarcastically calling them forgotten millionaires who would have no seat at the table (0:44) and beloved tenants (1:24), not showing appreciation for the taxes they are already paying (1:02), straight up saying they refuse to pay a fair share (2:11), being in favor of calling billionaires a policy failure (3:18), and insinuating they don't care about other who cannot get by (4:08)… all that coming from Brian sounds negative. 3. by rich I meant over 10 million a year. 4. you and I don't disagree; everyone has an opportunity. How easy or how hard...? that I don't know (maybe I am naïve), so I'm not going to discuss it. Also, I wish things were better for all Americans--like you and your uncle. Here's the status quo in health care: My spouse passed out at work many years ago. She came to when an ambulance showed up, and she took their advice and went to the ER next door, "just as a precaution," on her own power. They took her vital signs and, seeing no obvious signs of distress, gave her a pregnancy test (negative result) and discharged her. She didn't have her insurance card yet because we had just gotten married. Our total bill from that day's visit was over $1,000.00. For a pregnancy test, that can be bought 2 for $10.00 at any drug store. And as to my mother's recent experience, she suffered a heart attack and needed a triple bypass surgery. TO STAY ALIVE!!! She spent a week in the hospital and was treated to a bill of nearly $400k before her insurance kicked in. This is the system people are defending, people!!! Seriously?!? All of us contributing to a system that will benefit all of us, and prevent people from going bankrupt over a medical emergency is antithetical to the American Dream? Let that swirl around for a bit.

Trump cut taxes for the rich and unemployment is the lowest it's been since 1969.
Chulo.. just an fyi.. at the time of the stock market crash of 1928 the highest tax rate on the wealthiest of this country was only 20% (virtually the same as it is today go figure) and this was the beginning of the great depression.
And it will again!... maybe not today.. maybe not tomorrow.. but rest assured the ingredients like 1929 are there yet again due to but not limited to policies of Reagan and now Trump.
..cheers!

I can only speak for myself, but I certainly don't see myself being any happier for having vastly more money than I'd know what to do with. At some point, the only uses for money are to either buy land, buildings and companies to make you *even more* money, or to buy ridiculously overpriced things created (or just branded) specifically for people who have more money than they know what to do with. It's not easy to be happy with little or no money to one's name, but there definitely comes a point where raising your standard of living further really just becomes a hamster wheel you build for yourself; "Yeah, these marble floors are okay, but I really want some special Himalayan marble floors." I mean, really? Why teach ourselves not to be content with more than enough? Why demand so much while leaving so little for those who have literally nothing?
Feels like much of the US (and the world, quite probably) needs to binge-watch some of the more heartwarming christmas movies. Or hanukkah movies, or ramadan movies, if they have those. Whatever, but people need to warm back up to their fellow human beings and the world we all live in, before we all end up cold and alone in a world destroyed by the power of combined selfishness.
So yeah, I wouldn't mind giving away anything over even one million dollars a year. Not sure what one would even do with that much, except giving it to charity.
"If they're gonna tax income over ten million at 70%, nobody's gonna wanna work." Really? If that's the case I guess an average earner would have to cut their hours back to 9,615 hrs per week to avoid that tax.
If somebody is making 10 million dollars a year, it's not from work-related income. They have stock options, they have interest on their income. But it's not the average Joe going down to the corner office, and working an eight-hour day.

The miracle of tv preachers still going on in 2020. I am curious when this society will grow out of the Middle Ages.
The middle ages features masses of peasants depending on the government for everything. In case your forgot.

Sean Hannity, the blistering pimple on humanity.
They are deep state shadow government apparatchiks and they have been molding your mind with bull shit and you're too stupid to know it. One more thing, in order to close the income inequality gap,
wouldn't you say poor people must dream about getting richer?
This is the land of opportunity, why would Brian take away my dreams of becoming a millionaire?
PJ 18 Tires How on earth does a steep tax on income over $10 million per year destroy your dreams of becoming a millionaire?

Lindsey Summers - I swirled around it. I am an American who has lived in a Scandinavian country for 25 years. To this day I can't understand why so many of my fellow Americans living in "the most powerful country in the world" don't want to invest in a health care system for ALL. I hope all is well with you and your family.
@@aetl100 Thank you so much for your kind thoughts. It matters more than you know!! Enjoy your Saturday!!
Well done Brian! Love it when people stand up to Mr Propaganda Hannity and also highlight Alexandria’s leadership!
I hate our healthcare system. I found out that hospitals are charging $100 for just a bag of IV water that only costs 10cents to make.. and all that money and nurse pay is pathetically low for all the work they do.
Hannity I wish you were earning 5 bucks an hour and living in a ghetto so you would have an idea of how the "American Dream" would feel to you.
Losers always blame others. Winners always find a way to succeed. Play the victim.
@ So Trumps a loser.. GOOD TO KNOW. He has never taken responsibility for anything!
When will the American electorate stop voting against their interests. No working person who depends on a paycheck should be voting republican. That is idiotic. Democratic policies have built the middle class and benefit working people. Republican policies benefit the corporations and the wealthy. It's as simple as that.
P M Which democratic policies “built the middle class?”
Butch Garst exactly. These people are being brainwashed. Any inner city which nearly all are ran by democrats... is proof.
Butch Garst Awesome! Semper Fi!
@@marinecorps3269 -- What stupidity! Every freaking red state in America is close to and some even surpass Third-World status. I am sure you can read...read the United Nation's report of poverty in America bozo. """80%""" of Americans are living paycheck-to-paycheck...well over 50 million live in absolute poverty. Did your hearing go out also...they said in the video that 3 rather rich assholes in America controls so much wealth that equal 50% of American people. Wage suppression in America 'for all workers' have been going on for 'three decades.' And minimum wages not raised since the 90s is making it far worse....literally tens of millions of cannot even afford basic living cost. THAT HAS BEEN PLANNED BY THE ULTRA-RICH FOR DECADES NOW. And why do people vote for the very people that ass rapes them daily...........hate and fear.
Oh...and while doing volunteer work for a Hospice and freaking Food Pantries....I comfort and help just as many Republicans die because they either did not have enough healthcare or had none. Most of them sold everything they had AND STILL DIED. America is about as stupid of a nation out of all industrial countries in the world. I knew this freaking country would fall as far back as the 70s when I was just a teenager. I was hoping you freaking stupid, nut bag people would just wait at least 10 to 15 more years....that way I can have my cig and single malt Scotch on the rocks and watch it all burn to the ground.
I can really give a shit now...oh, I have mind...and live comfortable...but I still go out and volunteer to help the very people you can give a damn about.
Oh...also...you did not feel the rather large dildo being jammed up all of our asses with the tax cuts. I'D GET YOUR BUTT CHECK UP...WHILE YOU CAN STILL AFFORD HEALTHCARE.
Marine Corps , You can thank Democrats for a 40 hour work week, Social Security, and the end of child labor for US industry.
Love it!!! Thats my girl!!! #AOC2028
@John Hillman and she doesn't need you either. Obviously 😁

We have a progressive, proportional tax system here in Australia, a decent minimum wage (but needs to increase), public healthcare and no silly tipping at bars & restaurants. The Republicans in the USA are on another planet.
According to most trumpets, we live under a socialist government 😂😂😂
