the bent booster made me scream inside my head D:
Last time I came this early, I ended up with 18 years of child support
Sad giggety noises
Thats a RIP
giggety
You too huh
Dropping the "Ancient Ooze" eh
Scourge was a trash set but imho it's one of those Magic sets that hits the Aesthetic-tingle perfectly for me. The cards just SCREAM Magic: the Gathering. The old border, the traditional art styles. Everything. The Onslaught block in general is what Magic should look like to me. It's the pinnacle of that MTG aesthetic that we've lost with all of these garbage border updates, font changes, and mass-digitization of the art process.
Scourge has also some of the most brilliant/best looking foil cards out there. They're just blinding.
MakeUA-camGreatAgain well said! Unfortunately in these days we’ve completely lost that kind of art direction due to flashy shitcards! But we all know when WOTC hits something good in MTG they have to destroy that as soon as they can. They’re a bunch ofidiots. Now the art and layout of cards is just a politically correct meltin’ pot of Pokémon/Yugioh/ForceofWill/Transformers/MyLittlePony. I wish some of the old designer to be back at WOTC
Yeah, I just can't enjoy the game anymore. I literally still think of anything post 8th Ed. as "new" lol.
I gave up after mirrodin. New design and bannd cards again...i loved the game
Amen. Premodern magic forever
100 percent. Onslaught block was peak magic. After darksteel, everything went downhill.
0:49 The aftermath of Rudy finding out how bad the release of Commander 2020 was going to be.
"Wizards played it conservatively." Meanwhile Wizards: Let's print Mind's Desire. Instant bann.
Svetoslav Ivanov; fallowed up with Arcbound Ravager 2 sets later. I remember type 2 being all infinity until they banned it.
I think Rudy missed the point that most of those high casting cost cards were usually cycled for a secondary effect, and were rarely cast for their main casting cost. Or, they had a broken interaction with Storm, making them playable very quickly.
Scientists have still not managed to figure out how large Rudy's garbage piles are
He uses trash as staircase to reach higher shelfs and boxes.
If only there were websites listing the current market prices of cards.....it would make Rudy's life so much easier
Love your stuff Rudy. Been out of the magic stage for a long time. Thank you for the memorable days. Your comedy is truly funny. Thank you
Wouldn't mind seeing an unhinged, unglued, or one of those off kilter fun sets ripped. Thank you again Rudy
Hey Rudy, any chance we could get a series of videos starting with Alpha and Beta and showing a sealed item of each and every set? I think it would be awesome to see how the packs and art has changed over the years. Maybe break it up by year. Not asking you to open anything. :)
Good to see Scourge again, a wonderful set. If I recall, Scourge's themes was high casting cost, dragons, storm and landcycling; it also continued the Onslaught block's tribal theme for soldiers, birds, wizards, illusions, clerics, zombies, goblins, beasts, and elves. (might have missed one)
Just bogut a binder full of foils from this entire block. Really great artwork from this era!!
My oldest memory of opening packs was scourge. I had cards before that and maybe I had opened older boosters before that, but Scourge is what I vividly remember. Nostalgia trip this video
"This is Rudy in the middle of the night"
LMAO
Rudy - love procrastinating with you. You have a passion for MTG that appeals to the collector in all of us. I have not played since the 90"s, and yet find myself relating to your passion and totally jealous of your life choices. Every pack you tear open takes me back to that feeling where that hard spend lawn mowing money went into competition with friends as to who had the best random pick of the box. Throw it down in shock my friend. Absolute craziness is what I watch for.
I had to stop at 1:30 before we got any further and say, man Rudy, that was nice intro. It was cool, appreciate the extra artistic effort d,^-^
“Does Triple X exist?” Vin Diesel would like a word with you...
What a nostalgic stroll down memory lane. The Invasion, Odyssey and Onslaught blocks were my second favourite era of magic next to old Theros.
Sometimes i wonder if they toned down the set because the theme was so popular.
@@adolphus28 Yea, looking at it now, Invasion, Odyssey and Onslaught blocks were quite weak, but I don't know, standard just felt way more fun back then. Thank god for Commander because standard is a complete disaster right now.
The onslaught block is my favorite and when i played the most mtg and its a good nostalgia hit for me.
Today is May 5 2020 and TCGplayer median on those Pemmin's Aura is $12.99 USD. Median for foils is $25.75.
You were not crazy Rudy! Those blue uncommons are all hits! And the Undead Warchief was a hit as well!
Such a nostalgia trip! This was the first set I completed. I believe this was the last set before they changed the look of the cards
Love hearing the Rudy strategies for all these cards.
I'm starting to just come here just to see the edited intros alone
Same, and the uplifting message at the end of each video lol
There actually pretty good
Fun fact, Clerics with Skullclamp was a legitimate deck. That was a crazy standard and some of the most fun I had. Affinity /w Skullclamp, Disciple of the Vault, and Artifact Lands, Tooth and Nail (Elf and Nail), Goblins and all sorts of great stuff. I love the nostalgia.
Dude i played this deck befote clamp got banned. It was so broken. It was like a lightning fast suicide deck.
Just so you know - about the X in the casting cost question - look up Astral Cornucopia. It is a commander product card with a mana cost of triple (X) to add X charge counters to it. Sadly it is a mana rock that is...just not very good unless you add more of the counters later which would...not be difficult to do in certain decks?
Also the cards worth over 5$ in this set; Sliver Overlord; Decree of Silence; Pemmin's Aura (yes it is worth ~13 mid price on tcgplayer); Decree of Annihilation; Brain Freeze; Stifle
that call to the grace artwork is AWESOME. Way better than the reprint version
Rudy: 'look at those casting costs!'
Ramp decks: 'Hold my beer'
For future reference Rudy Undead Warchief is super highly sought after being about 5-6 bucks a copy, so you may wanna make a mental note of it
Yeah, this box pulled like, $60 worth of warchiefs lol.
The opening!! A triumph of the cinematic arts!! BRAVO!!
great memories, I lived that era from ounslaught to kamigawa. Respect mtg
Love the old frame and old artworks. The new ones simply can't compare.
I think I ordered one of these back in the day when I was still in high school. My friend bought an Onslaught box with MAIL ORDER CASH (don't do this), and there was a long shipping time and his mother complained and he got second a second box. And there's how I ended up with a set of original fetches which I no longer have.
This set introduced storm and changed magic forever
Triple X cost does exist in Astral Cornucopia.
"It's not like these are crazy, overpowered cards..."
...drops Mind's Desire without even reading it.
I still have my cleric deck!
Edit: omg I'm old!
The dramatic camera angles gets me everytime 😎 satisfaction guarenteed, thanks Rudy
Why on a Wednesday morning? What do you do Tuesday night?
This was a great block. IPA-OLS was the best time to play magic. No planeswalkers bs, damage still on the stack.
it was a great set. I was in high school still and it was the last set before the change of the borders. After that it was 8th edition. Real cool thing about Scourge, it was a set that had no reprints in it.
this era of magic was my heyday. Rudy says this wasn't a popular time for magic but I think lots of people from the pokemon-mtg pipeline have strong memories of these sets
💀💀💀💜
Really great art and shine on that first foil card was incredible!!!
Holy SHIT Scourge was a cool set looking back on it. I wasn't into Magic when it came out, but it sure has some neato cards when seeing them now.
Great video, brings back so many memory and moment from when i was young...thanks Rudy
Undead Warchief is a staple of old school zombie decks. Two of those in a deck is giving all zombies +4/+2 and reduces generic mana casting cost by two. It’s still a $5-6 card. Scourge is one of those sets where the uncommons are almost better than the rares.
Astral Cornucopia is XXX cost... kinda why at my LGS it was nicknamed the pornucopia
Current Price of Near Mint Undead Warchief is at 4-5 bucks non foil Yes they are a thing Rudy. LP's are going for about 2.Foil is a 10 dollar card.
23:42 Back when magic was about actual strategy and not OTK's.
Onslaught block was peak magic. All colors were so well balanced. I remember having epic games running blue white control against mono red goblins. Black green cemetery, red white slide, blue white control, mono black clerics, black white control. Man. How you went right through that Decree of justice without acknowledging what it was. That card was the muscle in all blue white decks. If bw resolved justice, it was game. That card, along with eternal dragon, and goblin piledriver, defined onslaught block.
The high casting cost made the game fun. If you wanted to cast big spells the game made you work for it. I remember running blue white control you had to actually control the board. I remember sweating in tournaments trying to keep goblins at Bay with one life left. Matches would last 45 minutes and then finally that decree of Justice would drop where that Eternal Dragon would drop and it would be game. Now you have huge creatures with crazy abilities and they're just a 5 drop. With all the Mana ramping now of course games are going to go super fast. And that's one of the biggest complaints about standard now.
After onslaught mtg went downhill with too many gimmicks. I played into mirrodin and darksteel and noticed the change. The mechanics became way to over reaching, creatures became way to OP making so many sorceries and spells obsolete, reprinting and replacing epic cards like wrath of god.
I tried to get back into magic just last month and its just shit now. Apparently theres fking spiderman, racecars, and lord of the rings in mtg now. What the actual F🤦♂️
What have these kids allowed to happen to the game that i once loved?
this is the set i remember as a kid starting mtg with. has a huge place in my heart. nostalgia city lol thx for the video. what does a box of these go for?
Nathan Rodriguez Rudy sells them for five floppy tacos a lock of your hair and a few pubes. You also have to agree to play magic the yuglioing in his parents basement 2 nights a week
About 350- 400 USD give or take
300-400 bucks a box
Damn I’m not as funny as I thought I was press f for lavaclaw reach around
Back in the days, as a Kid with 9, i started to play Magic before Pokemon in EU.
What is the song that plays in the beginning on the video? The sound is awesome!
"OnomonopoeaNefashupoopoopeeyaa". Yup. That is a word folks and Rudy coined it.
One of my favorite sets! Also, the only set that I’ve ever completed a master set for!
*looks at key piece to Shadowborn Apostles deck* "Are people building cleric decks?!"
Card quality was so much better back then. Notice the quality of the inking and the consistency and smoothness of the corners.
How do people get boxes like this off Rudy? I need some tenth edition ✌
As of June 13th, Decree of Silence, Sliver Overlord and Pemmin’s Aura are the top 3 cards of this set.
hey rudy. just wanted to say i love watching these unboxing videos. i love the feeling of when an amazing card is pulled because you can really feel the amazement when it happens. while i am going to college for a business management degree and love the lectures you give here for running a business, i started watching for that pack opening feeling and also love seeing older cards because i started mtg in 2011. there are so many good cards i don't know about like dragonstorm. just had to buy a copy after seeing this video and put it into my dragon golos deck.
Onslaught,Legions, scourge. My favorite block, because thats when i started playing :)
Scourge was my first set. Good times.
24:05 Fun fact - The first sighting of Rudy’s Lighthouse is in the background of the art of Uncontrolled Infestation.
Ps You can’t spell Uncontrolled with Trolled, lol😄
Love the old school foils, wizards needs to do more retro judge foils. Pure art.
Oh man, Decree of Justice. I ran a cheesy Mirari/Mirari's Wake Green White mess with that card as my kill condition. Bunch of elf mana accel and absorbing tons of damage which I healed up through Wellwisher while I set up, then dropped 20 5/5 flying angels (or beefed them to 8/8 flying tramplers with Overrun)
Wasn't making a killing, but it was a fun deck for FNM when I didn't feel like playing U/G Madness
For anyone wondering about actual triple X cards, astral cornucopia is probably the most common one, but I don't know how many there are in total.
Hey comments/youtube community, I'm new to Alpha Investment's channel and my friends are fans of him as well, but we were wondering if he sells any of the boxes we see he has so many of. We were also wondering if that's what happens when he opens them: I.E. someone buys a box from him, he opens it for content, then sends the cards to the person. Alpha Investments?
yeah, the last one that's an enchantment is in the top 10 most valuable cards in the set. The zombie you mentioned is also decent, as is the tendrils and dragonspeaker shaman
Pretty sure Rudy could ham every card in Magic with "There's Rudy in the corner", "Old man Rudy", "Rudy on Reddit", and I still giggle like an infatuated school girl... stop being so adorable.
Just invested in some kaladesh, amonkhet and hour of devastation packs. Hopefully some innovation and masterpieces incoming
interesting how rudy was so hyped about form of the dragon in a previous mystery box video and when he pulls the OG form of the dragon it looks like as if he thinks this is a baaaad card... and then bladewing the risen... I remember the days when Bladewing was one of the most played around decks because he was such a powerhouse in a dragon controlled meta xD
Pemmin's Aura ... I . am . SUPERMAN!
The 1st cards set with a big emphasis on dragons. I loved collecting/playing with this set.
Oh man, this brings back memories. Good old times of quality non-Pringled foils!
Killin' it with the humor today Rudy!!!
Yooooo i was just wishing you would do a scourge open soon! I won 2 boxes of this set at a ptq when i was 13. My mtg career highlight.
that one pack had 3 playable cards, tendrils, temple and xantid swarm
wow this art is nuts long live the scourge lab
You know Rudy is from Florida when he has random ass lawn ornaments in his storage.
12:54 The first time Ruby reads something correctly he gets demonetized. On the bright side he is very rich.
I have 2 booster boxes sealed of Scourge
They were Thrulls, not Thralls back in the day - like Thrull Retainer
Love this set. Guilty Conscience put on a Stuffy Doll = instant death. Was hoping to see a Stifle.
I want to hear the story behind the damaged Throne and Spark boxes !
Found some scourge italian sealed box for 114 euro each plus 22% taxes, worth buying or not? Let me know everyone please, thank you all
Imo if Italians your thing sure. You're buying at about 30% of what the English version might go for but i'm not sure whether the demand for this in Italy (or anywhere else) is strong (or will ne strong) atm.
I started magic when this set came out. First deck I made was a goblin deck
Luis Cordero back the I remember clickslither saw play in type 2 goblin decks. Piledriver’s, warchiefs, siege gang commanders. Was a lot of fun.
how much for the literally snapped in half Eldraine packs?
Rudy: "You ever think they're gonna bring Thrulls back, like from Fallen Empires?" (9:08)
Every Ravnica set and Time Spiral block: *glares intently*
Red Wildrider didn’t they have some in war of the spark, my favorite artist Seb has a thrull in Spark.
Decree of Justice brings back good memories of Rift Slide decks.
Astral cornucopia is triple x casting cost.
I've had Pemmin's Aura in an EDH deck for like 8 years. It's used in infinite combos and I always thought I should've bought more...
Scourge was when I started. Was fun
God the foiling of older cards are awesome.
Hey hey ruddy do I look like a hushpuppy! Keep being a carot brother!! Hahaha
Rudy, I'm shamefully not a patron but I would love to get ahold of you about some boxes and pricing of such boxes to purchase. How would I be able to reach out? On here? An email? Someone let me know. Thanks in advance
Yeah he's probably not going to do that. You would have to be lucky to find a patron willing to help you out and be legit to you. Good luck on the search. This is coming from a patron myself.
You can start ny searching sold listings on Ebay.
*Triple X*
The one I know of is Astral Cornucopia, an artifact that enters with X counters. I feel like there's at least one more.
Hell yea I love Form of the Dragon, turns you into a fucking 5/5 flying dragon!
Yes I know it's not a good card, but it's a badass card design that I built a casual UWR control deck around, my friend asked what my win-con was right before I got it out and I giddily responded with "Me" 🤣🤣
Pay F for respects to that bent pack, our fallen bretheren.
1:08 RIP Oko inside that pack... That pack didnt stand a chance.
Any set with a card named Goblin Psychopath is okay in my book👍👹👍
What playmat is that??
