MH1 Rudy: Ewww garbage fire futuresight
Onslaught Rudy: Gorgeous enchantment futuresight
his box vs patreon's box
The art made the difference between each reprint.. i'd love this Onslaught future sight over the later versions for sure
So you have cards called Custody Battle and Aggravated Assault in the set. I feel like there was a designer at wizards that was going through some shit when they were making this set.
And Blatant Thievery
Man getting beat by woman on the card Swat
Sounds like my childhood 😂
Fetchlands? PFFT. They ain't got nothin' on Evolving Wilds, which can fetch any basic land.
Easiest investment of my life.
legacy player, Who want to kill you now
Unless of course you would rather fetch for an Underground Sea...
Remember, they didn't have Evolving wilds and or Terramorphic Expanse back then, it would be about 10 years before that.
"The patron paid $1000 a pack." What a steal!
Onslaught was the set that got me into Magic. I opened one fetch (Polluted Delta) and I'm just glad I didn't trade it for a frickin' Shivan Dragon or something.
Me too. Except I got a Bloodstained Mire and traded it for two Doubtless Ones because I was doing cleric tribal.
I thought taking a damage was horrible to search for a land.
This has to be the peak of card design. My god these cards are gorgeous
Onslaught brings back so many memories, i recognized almost every single card in the box....elf, soldier, goblin decks. i won quite a few games with tribal unity and the heedless one.
"Who drew that, of course rebecca!" When is it never Rebecca.
When its Terese 😏
You can immediately recognize who drew what when they do an amazing job every time... many of these artists set such huge standards yet it usually is just a piece of cake for them
"I liked her hands, she had good finger nails"
*Kira has appeared*
I restarted playing magic about a month ago. This was the last set I played as a kid, and OMG the nostalgia from the arts. I´m in tears. Thanks Rudy
18 years! That makes me feel old. I started playing in Invasion, but only really got into competitive between Onslaught and Mirrodin.
I got into magic in set 8 and that started it all for me, I only bought these cards for the artwork i Love and appreciated all the old artwork. They dont make them like they used to i miss the older frames and artwork style
I have always been pretty horrible at card games but I had bought a few packs in this era as a kid, just for the experience of opening them and looking at the cards.
Really wish they would go back to the old frames and the older way of doing the artwork on the cards. Now it's all done on the pc with adobe illustrator or something similar I wish they would do it by hand again. It might be more work for the artists but I think they would sell more cards. Plus it will look amazing.
@Goomba Jenkins Your right. Very saddening.
Onslaught was a set that had amazing amazing (Timmy) mono coloured legends. Silvos was the green one. Arcanis and Jareth caught my attention back in the day!
Phage the Untouchable is on swat
Still have bunch of these foil lands..just seeing the old art of akroma and phage is stunning
I have foil basics from Invasion also - so gorgeous !!!
Thank you Rudy. I only started MTG a little over a year ago, but your intros through the old boxes made me able to imagine what it would be like going down memory lane with old boxes. I regret not starting MTG all that time ago. (>_
"Invention of the Fetchland"
*angry Mirage noises*
I was 11 when Onslaught block was new and I had just really starting getting into Magic, man I loved the Gustcloaks! I played mono white Soldiers at the time, being able to swing them freely and all the other soldier synergies was so much fun.
Opening GC Runner > Cloudreach Cavalry > GC Harrier > Daru Warchief > GC Savior + Piety Charm or another Warchief + Cavalry was chefs kiss.
Also, Visara must have a really strong neck 🤔🤔🤔
My first deck was the Celestial Assault and it run all of the Gustcloaks. I never found someone who liked the Gustcloak mechanic as well hahaha. I still remember the exact day my dad got me that deck as a gift after I asked so fkn much for some MTG cards. Recently I found someone selling one of those decks sealed and in Portuguese, just like my first deck, but they are charging R$250 (something around US$50) and the total value of the cards get around R$4 (less than a dollar). My inner child is begging me for it, but my adult ass is not pleased with the thought of spending so much money on some low value cards... But nonetheless, Odyssey and Onslaught were awesome blocks with awesome arts/lore and I really wish to play those cards again someday, somehow.
The intro reminds me of Age of Empires 2 intro beside playing MTG for like 20 years ago, and you pulled Visara! 18:37 !
Throught Scion of Darkness also was in Onslaught because he looks like the beast on the booster packs, i know its from Legions.
By the way, good to see old school MTG.
Rudy: *pulls foil island of raw beauty*
Me: *drools*
Onslaught was the first full box I opened when I was a kiddo, thanks for this Rudy as well as the supporter! Pro tip: listen to nu metal for the full experience
i got started with Magic around onslaught, opened a few fetches, a windswept heath foil too ( Straight to binder, because lands was boring back then, so there it rested, it remains untouched this very day) I needed this nostalgia trip.
Rudy this is the set that I started playing as a kid. Thanks so much for the trip down memory lane.
I miss this era of artwork. I started playing during Planer Chaos and this more high fantasy style always strums the heart strings for me.
Oh man, this brings me back. I miss those old card frames.
This was the first really big "TRIBAL" set. Wizards, Elves, Goblins, Zombies, Clerics, etc.
Benjamin Jernigan soldiers and beasts too!!
A foil polluted Delta is $700 on channel snowball
The new artwork has nothing on old school. Watching u open this brings me back so many years. Remember buying boosters from the old blockbuster in town when I was a Timmy. Only place that had tempest and mirage boosters back then. Blows my mind ruby. Thanks for all the fun vids man
Magic wasn’t dying during this period at all, you just didn’t play or collect at that point so I assume that was the same with everyone. That was the period when the pro tour was steadily growing in popularity and coverage. And magic sales were going up. Was when Kai Budde was making a name for himself, hence his card in this set “void mage prodigy”
That time I was a patron, and asked often to buy older sets, and I was repeatedly told "We do not sell older sets beyond theros..." balogona.... Thanks Rudy. Thanks. Took the money and ran.
These old unboxings just really make my day start right
Onslaught was one of the first sets to take really seriously. This brings back great memories.
The onslaught block is my favorite set its really hard to watch you not value the characters from the books like i do 😭
You know Rudy's nostalgic when he talk about playability over financial value !
Go 3.69696969 ! 🥰
So many good cards in this set! T.y. Rudy!
Soo excited for this video! Onslaught was when I started 🤘
Hey! More respect to the Silklash Spider. It saved me a lot on high school mtg, the best format ever hahahaha
anytime theres a music intro i rush to click on that like button asap.
rudy has a 99% success rate on good music in these music intro starts.
I bought a boosterbox with my brother in the day in 2002 for like 200 euros. we got like 3 goblin piledrivers in it, but for me most importantly, a krosan colossus. God i loved that card, it was such a great piece of art. Onslaught block is my favorite one in all of magic. Watching this really wanted that i could go back on time and open that boosterbox again :D allways regretted not having Rorix Bladewing and Blistering Firecat, those artworks were so crazy. Thx for opening the box :D
12:31 No comment on the Prowling Pangolin ? It's a pretty famous animal these days ...
Yes one of my favorite boosters and a classic during my mtg time at school.
Rudy I believe there was 4 different landcycles in Onslaught a common cycling one, a uncommon tribal creature type cycle, a rare tribal creature type cycle, and of course the fetches. Anyways love you man and I hope you have a wonderful day!!!
Always loved the Rudys Entrail Feaster. I loved cracking packs of this set back in the day. Keep it up Rudy!!!
So many memories! Onslaught was the last set I played with my first time I played Magic. I just picked it back up again last year, unfortunately I cannot find any of my old cards :/. Thank you for the trip down memory lane Rudy!
The artwork on old carts is gorgeous. I wish I had a deck full of those cards.
Awesome video! Keep opening old booster boxes please!
If I remember correctly, this was the first set I played back then. Amazing memories^^ I actually cracked a Riptide Entrancer in Foil myself back in those days :D Thanks for sharing! Love this stuff!
Greetings from Germany! Stay safe and healthy!
man, I recently got back into magic and after watching a couple of vids I looked at my old cards and yepp, back in the day I pulled a polluted delta foil !
I was so excited until I saw that for some reason 2 corners are a little bend .... I cannot explain that because I remember that I was really sad about getting a foil land and not a big fat green creature as foil. So I never really played with it but apparently as kid I just liked to look at foily cards -___- and now its condition is basically played :( suuuux
a foil delta is still a foil delta :) and it has your memories. good times
Man this brings me back to binge opening packs of Onslaught.
Each of those Onslaught cards is an lsd-trip into my paradise lost-adolescence... thanks for the show
Hey Rudy the silklash spider is what got me into magic it's art is so cool a huge spider wrapping up a dragon with a semi hurricane attached
Onslaught block. The peak of my Magic experience. This is what really got me in to playing.
Hi Rudy I just wanna say you've inspired me to start selling MTG cards for my self. Working towards being able to buy multiple booster boxes, cause opening them are just a blast. Keep up the great work 👌
Love the Words of Worship artwork!! :O
My favorite mtg art is from onslaught / Odyssey era. I got my first cards - a booster, in 4th grade maybe? when i couldn't even speak english (not native). Loved the darkish realness to the art, to me this is the kind of art that represented fantasy for me along with DND 3,5
Onslaught was when I first got into playing magic at tournaments, rather than just playing during lunch in HS. Such a great time. I left during the last block of Kamigawa. I still just the collect cards for shits and giggles. No time or people to play with like back in the Hs days. Even my LGS’ are lucky to have 10 players.
I can't get into this, to me it seems way to complex for it's own good, but I love watching Rudy opening these
Emkill it’s easier to get into now. Over the years the rules have been changed to make it easier for new players. I can see how it would be intimidating to get into though.
happy birthday to me and cant find anything better then watching magic card openings and i have opened one of the boxes it was a good time
I was walking home with my semi-competitive Yu-Gi-Oh deck in my bag and I decided on a whim that I was going to trade it for some magic. Went into my LGS, and traded my deck for a Booster box of Onslaught, and some random rares that I liked in the case. I had magic cards from previous sets that I got through my brother but Onslaught was my first true Magic set when I jumped in, and it all started with a booster box just like this...good times.
So much memories, i was introduced to Magic with Onslaught!
“What sort of decks should contain a fetchland?”
“Yes.”
I first played in 4th ed era .. but really started playing FNM / Pre releases etc during Onslaught onwards - it was a brilliant time to get into the game. Creature themed decks, bait and switch style combat with Morph creatures. Brings back a lot of memories. Phage & Akroma
I agree with the old school foiling on blue cards, absolute art.
I love this. This was my first set!
Favorite onslaught card is voidmage prodigy. It was the kai budde card
Onslaught was the first booster pack I ever opened, this really takes me back. All these commons are so nostalgic
I cant believe this... Frickin ONSLAUGHT
So awesome I remember opening these as a kid!
The epicly cheesy epic adventure song paired with the beautiful cinematography at the beginning earned this comment + like.
That's some serious nostalgia ladies and gents....my god how many hours playing with this crappy set....i was so young😭thanks Rudy
Also more travelling phone on the beginning it is alwais awesome🤜🤛
I have the factory sealed full set maybe I'll open it.
Thank you Alex M.!!
The only Onslaught will be the one on our wallets. -William Shakespeare. Seriously Rudy, thanks for keeping the videos going. It's a great way to start the morning while eating my cereal out of an old box of Mirage. :)
Onslaught was incredible.. I started playing again when this set was released after having been lured to Yu-Gi-Oh for several years. Coincidentally, these novels were also excellent!
Damn Rudy, how can you not remember Phage the untouchable and Akroma!? See, should have read the novels bro. That shit was off the hook.
You don't remember Ixidor either? even though he's on the front of the box? LOL.
Having read the novels I can give you insight into why there's a lot of big creatures and wizards, this was the age of the pit fights in Dominaria. All the greatest warriors were drawn there to test their mettle and compete for a chance to win fantastic and powerful artifacts leftover from the brothers' war.
I started with the scourge + onslaught + legions block, what a legendary time
Foils are absolutely gorgeous in this set
Wow, this set has a re-print of Syphon Soul! One of the first multi player cards in MTG 🙌
You mentioned not really caring about a creature type (illusions was it?) and I was curious how you feel about slivers :)
😎 going back to a time before corona, youtube, smart cars, selfie sticks, texting while driving, lottery cards, people shoving gerbals in their... Let's just say it was some good times
Eidos interactive? That brings back memories.
I love this style of introduction!!!
Nostalgia! The block I started playing magic with!
Also remember that ice age has like 40 reserve list cards too. With reserve list skyrocketing recently, sealed ice age booster boxes are going up in price.
I don't know about the rest of the world but at that point magic was really popular here in Brazil. It seemed to slow down around the Ravnica Block era but since Zendikar it's been going up and i think now it's more popular than ever.
Yep, I remember when this set came out. Opened a couple boxes. Got all the fetches Still have them.
3 Fetchlands is definitely not the average for Onslaught. This was a MASSIVE set, 2 was the average.
izalith 6 yup, even less potentially, like 1.8ish. He is basing it on new sets like khans I think, cause he didn’t seem too familiar with this set at all
the math works out to about 1.64 (63 repeating)
Very cool set! Thanks for sharing!
Seeing this opened makes my 15 year old self super happy.
I bought a few of Onslaught boxes online when I was a teen for like 50-60 bucks. It was great.
My gahds, the art is so so beautiful.. DAMN!
Was that fear effect for PlayStation!? I have forgotten about that gem.
Wow that seems like alot of foils! I was hoping to see a foil uncommon Blackmail- my favorite card from this set besides Polluted Delta.
Rudy - "This is the first time we have ever experienced fetchlands" - Obviously has never opened a box of Mirage.
First allied...obviously
last block to have the old card style. I was a Junior in High school at the time. I bought a box, did not get one single Fetch land, was so disappointed.
10:48 good to know that even goblins wash their backsides
I don't think he's washing his backside ;)
Malthan he ate too much chipotle and was trying to cool his bunghole down, like cartman
The big problem with the sets during this era was people still remembered how amazing the Urza block was, and how lackluster Masques was in comparison. This was compounded by the legal battle Hasbro faced at the time. So people were still a bit wary even though there were solid cards in Onslaught.
I would love to break into one of Rudy's warehouses and just open packs! that would be so much fun!
big nostalg on this video. this was the first set i played sealed with when i was a kid.
Dude, so nuts that u said people did appreciate these sets till later in there existence. In our old shop it wasn’t till we were past standard that people really started to use onslaught and so on.
That last foil is actually a thing. Copy of that in the pre con foil sliver deck
I appreciated this era, it was the only time I played magic. I think I bought 3 boxes of onslaught trying to get goblin piledrivers
