  • Italy's entry for Eurovision 2022 sees a return of Mahmood, this time teaming up with Blanco to perform Brividi. Whilst "reactions" are a big form of content for those who follow Eurovision, MTR takes a music teacher analysis approach on a first listening to this song performed at the San Remo Festival, 2022.

    The first verse introduces Mahmood. The music is slow and delicate as to describe a character that is peaceful. Mahmood words are more abstract and poetic when compared to the words of the second character as we'll see later in the song ("I dreamt about flying with you on a diamond bike"). Mahmood is mature and passionate. But there's something's wrong and we hear the music going up and down. We get the first clue: this is the story of a toxic relationship and as we'll learn later, this is consuming Mahmood ("to hear 'I love you' I mixed drugs and tears"). In fact, the very first sound we hear at the beginning of the song is the sound of an out of tune guitar as to indicate that something is broken. The first verse ends in a chorus that is Mahmood's declaration of love.
    The second verse is about Blanco and here we have the introduction of the drums. The song gains pace as to describe the personality of someone younger and more instinctive. Blanco's words are simpler than Mahmood's and they describe the relationship from a carnal point of view: "You wake me up in the morning, you spill wine on the bed, you bite my skin". The two character interpret love in two completely different ways and so the music between the two verses changes dramatically. Then, we get to the second chorus that is Blanco's 'I love you'.
    In the third verse we get to the break up. The lovers yell at each other as the drums take over. It's a fight, there's no singing anymore, it's rapping. The fight ends. Strings still there, the tension is still there. No drums anymore and the words are broken into pieces as the characters start crying. Blanco yells: "Que-e-sto-o vele-no-o che ci sputiamo ogni giorno io non lo voglio più addosso"- that roughly translates to "Thi-i-is poi-so-on that we spit to each other, I don't want it on me"-followed by Mahmood broken voice "Lo ve-di-i? Sono qui-i! S'una bi-ci di diamanti, uno fra tanti"-roughly "Can't you see-e? I am he-ere! On a diamond bicycle, one among the others". The two characters then remember why they love each other and the third verse ends in the most beautiful chorus.
    This song is a piece of art. The more you listen to it, the more you discover. It's like watching a movie: the music guides the listener, it describes the characters and the situations.

      And not only regarding the composition, but the relation of composition and lyrics, which are both interpretated so exellent by those two singers in this performance.
      I am astounded and surprised, havn't expected it it, when I watched it the first time. And found more in it ever since I watched it, listened to it. Complex and deep.

    I think, even melodically, Mahmood represent the mature one and Blanco is the young: same accords, same vibes but 2 very distinct way to show the same sentiment. Mahmood's fraseggio is the complex one, Blanco's music writing is more semplicistic. The song is about the struggle two different men have with their sentiments, ten years apart one from the other. And I think is brilliant that Mahmood verse are the most complicated one because his struggle is not the same of a 18years old. But, the feeling of the younger are not less valuable only because they are less complex.
    I hope I made sense 😉

    Mahmood and Blanco said, more than once, that the song is about the same struggle (not only in love, but in life in general... a struggle to express themselves, to feel adequate) as seen from their two personal and different point of view.
    What I love about the song is that they delivered the message through the music, not the lyrics: the lyrics are all about this feeling, this struggle. They don't say, ever in the song, "we are different, but we feel the same". They sing different melodies in the verses, each of them with his own style and sensibility, and then they come together, in unison and harmonizing perfectly (sometimes you can't understand who is singing what) in the chorus. And this is the whole song, for me: two people, standing in front of each other, being vulnerable, each in their own unique way, thinking they are the only ones who feel that way and discovering that we all do (and we, as an audience, discover it with them).
    Our experience can be different, we can see things differently, we can express things differently, but deep down, in our core, we are really much the same, we all feel the same. .
    I think this is why this song is so powerful, at least for me: there are no filters. It's the music and the voices that carries the whole message. And, as a singer myself, I also love how they don't try to out - perform each other, but they feed off each other's performance, making the song even more powerful.
    It doesn't have to make sense.
    You just have to feel it.

      You cannot judge ESC songs without looking at the lyrics - it all makes sense. It is not an instrumental song, it does have a text that belongs to it.

    The main fact to focus when you approach to a song from Italy to ESC, is that never the song is written for Eurovision. It’s the song that wins SanRemo Festival which is the most important historical national competition. The artists must to be already established or winner of some previous contests or with a huge hit behind. Mahmood and Blanco are very talented and with a huge fan base and in this song they bring their own style melted so well that to me sounds as a contemporary ballad, very unexpected and genius. If you check some songs from their own discography you’ll suddenly understand this song and why sounds like this. And last but not least, if you don’t understand lirics, you lose 50% of it. Always interesting to see how abroad is the first reaction and especially from you, always honest. Can I hope to see some reaction to Mahmood ( Rapide, Talata, Inuyasha) and Blanco ( notti in bianco acoustic version or blu celeste underwater session?)😅🤗🇮🇹

    The song is about these 2 boys 👬 who find it difficult to love, because they are afraid of making mistakes. I find it very beautiful in the way they are different from each other, and in the voice. This diversity is felt in the song. 👨‍⚕️Mahmood speaks of an Idyllic, Poetic love (I dreamed of flying with you/what s your fear? A deep sea where you con't touch) While 🤷Blanco speaks of a more instinctive part (You who dirty my bed with wine/You who bites my skin) these 2 contrasts are elegant and beautiful to see and listen. 💘

    I'm not a composer whatsoever and I appreciate your analysis very much. My thoughts: I think it's just different styles by two different artists combined together, nothing to be bothered by. Pretty much every song starts slow, let alone a ballad (Piano and voice. Done), so that gave Mahmood space to do his thing. He likes playing with melodies, it's not the first time and won't be the last. Blanco, on the other hand, had his verse when all the instruments joined in so it sounded fuller and he doesn't have the same flow as Mahmood so yes, they sounded different for obvious reasons to me. One thing to keep in mind while listening to this: they're telling us a story by two different points of view so I guess this can explain a little bit why they chose to have a different approach in the verses. Then the bridge, which always sounds a lot different from the rest of the song because that is what it is: a transition, a contrasting section. Again I appreciate your analysis because it made me think about the composition 🙂

    • @TheMuserResolute
      @TheMuserResolute  2 роки тому +6

      Thank you! I was taken aback by the bridge at the time, which of course should always be contrasting. It has already grown on me through listening to it during editing this video - which kinda annoys me because I’m always discovering new things on a second listening 😆 I’ve also definitely realised now that this is a mix of Mahmood and Blanco’s styles.
      Thanks so much for your comment and I appreciate the further explanations considering I don’t know much about Mahmood (apart from Soldi 😆) and know anything about Blanco!,

    So I absolutely love it and got chills the first time I heard it. As a songwriter myself I actually really like the fact that they don't have a "basic structure" like the two verses are completely different and then that the bridge goes into this whole other section. It creates contrast and keeps the song interesting. You mention Zitti e Buoni which also kinda does that in the second verse and I really like that they do it this way. So yea this to me is a potential winner and my in my opinions this is second only to Greece :)

    • @TheMuserResolute
      @TheMuserResolute  2 роки тому +6

      Thank you for this. Yup I thought
      That about Zitti E Buoni too (considering it’s so rhythmically different in the second verse). What both verses share though is the same vocal timbre (Damiano), quick rhythms, and and overall small melodic range, which brividi contrasts in all aspects.
      But when looking at the meaning behind the song (as many have helped me understand), it makes so much sense. My worry is - will that communicate with non Italian ESC audiences who are voting based on one listening?
      It doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things though - they won San Remo, it’s a beautiful song

    I am not a musician but a simple lover of music that listens and has listened to every genre (Opera, jazz, pop, rock, rap, ...) in its 60 years of life. I followed the Sanremo Festival and when the three of them appeared (the pianist is actually the co-author of this piece, also of Blanco's pieces and now he also works with Mahmood) with this piece at the first listen they "took" me, captured and transported me away gradually in the different moments, among other things, even though I am Italian I was not hearing the words at all, only the music and those voices. I found the song innovative, from my humble point of view as a non-expert it seems to me that they have been able to modernize the so-called Italian melodic song, creating a piece that is not at all trivial and not at all boring.
    In the comments here, someone mentioned Elisa, a singer and author whom I admire very much but I found her piece boring about her, not up to her, not at all expressive of her fine singing skills. I found Irama's song splendid but definitely the three performances by Mahmood and Blanco were of another impact, with small differences and some imperfections that made us understand how much they were really interpreting and not just performing the song. The Sanremo orchestra certainly adds an extra atmosphere not only to this but also to all the songs, but also the piece of the video seems to me well supported in the instrumental part. I didn't know either artist, a little Mahmood and only for MONEY. After Sanremo I then listened to their works and between the two what won me over was Blanco, especially with Blu Celeste, especially in the acoustic version.
    I apologize for my prolixity.

    It’s asimmetrically nice 😄. I think there’s something weird in the first verse, the change of speed taken by itself sounds almost kitsch, and also the rap bridge sounds weird in a ballad. But the whole thing works! It’s strange and interesting because it sounds courageously diverse and impredictable. Also the chorus starts as a sudden break and develops impredictably and you feel the order and the simmetry of it only in its end. It sounds new and original

    • @TheMuserResolute
      @TheMuserResolute  2 роки тому

      You’re right! It does make it interesting. My issue is that melodically, there were absolutely no similarities, which makes this confusing.
      I can see though that it’s intentionally done from a storytelling perspective. This works very well compositionally and emotionally ESC aside. My critiques were very based on how it would perform in the ESC as a result (for non Italian audiences who haven’t heard it before the one shot performance the song has in the finals)

  • @alexwtf80
    @alexwtf80 2 роки тому +4

    I think the presence of two different melody lines reflects the fact that the song tell two different stories. Each singer is singing about its own (failing) love story. I'm not a trained musician but I don't hear that steep contrast that you feel between the first and second verse. They are different but it doesn't give me an uneasy feeling while listening to it. Also lyrics are a big part of the composition and takes you to a place if you let them sink in.
    I have too mixed feelings about this song but it definetely grew on me over time

    • @TheMuserResolute
      @TheMuserResolute  2 роки тому

      Thank you 😊 I think the more I look into this, the more it makes sense lyrically and the story which is being conveyed. It’s certainly a genius piece of writing which is an overall grower over time.
      But with its complexity, I worry it may not be able to connect enough with non Italian audiences who see and hear this for the first time only in the finals.

      @@TheMuserResolute well you shouldn't worry, because we don't care much :)
      The point is showing off what we like in music, not going for the win every time.
      I had the "composition mess" sensation with two songs this year. Israel seems to be a zombie song, made out of 4 different ones butchered and patched together. Key changes, melody changes, there is everything it shouldn't be in that song. The other one is Azerbaijan. Probably someone else may have already explained it but i heard other songs from Blanco and his fav composer Michelangelo (that has written brividi too). there is another song from them, its a duet too, and his parts and the other singer parts are slighly different in style, to differenciate their unique takes and styles, so i think its just their way to make duets (honestly i think more interesting) but you as a composer i might understand why it feels random or without reason.
    Also in an interview the singers said they wrote their parts by themselves without talking to each other, then michelangelo came in and armonized them together making it one complete song.
    I'm italian i hope i explained correctly

    I'm personally not troubled by the differnce between the intro and the following (but I tend to like songs that have "two dueling souls" anyway: entertained by Bohemian Rhapsody, liking Paranoid Android, etc; risky in a much shorter 3 minutes song, tho...);
    I have more problems with the "rhythmic part" sung by Blanco later on, but it probably sticks out to me more just because of the context with arcs, etc. ;
    in particular, I find the intro maybe imperfect, but sophisticated in feeling (Alessandro tends to gravitate to that; and so his lyrics);
    I do agree tho that they took a big gamble with so much "complexity" at the beginning, because - I agree - it takes multiple listenings to fully "bloom" to its beauty. Being a 3 minutes song that is supposed to convince people at first listening to win, I see why you say "curious about why so high". for the public, it really will depend on how many listenings they will get these weeks before the finals. I'm skeptical about the final win;
    of the songs I've listened tho, it's still one of my faves, and it's not because it has "my" flag. I think that it's true that the general intention of italy is - given its Big-Five status and therefore not having to compete to go to the final) is to bring something interesting, worthy and somehow "genuine" (whatever it means) and not necessarily win. Even tho, it would be very fun to host again; we'd be happy about it more than the win itself.
    out of Sanremo, they were second in my preferences, barely surpassed by Elisa ("O forse sei tu") that you'd probably find much more cohesive in composition (and she's an awesome singer and producer, but that's another topic)

      Thanks for this! I can say this has already started growing on me; and you’re right that it is a gamble considering they only have 3 minutes. It all depends on how much of the Eurovision fandom still only hear these songs for the first time on the show.
      No doubt it’ll do well. These are two incredible performers with undeniable chemistry. I’m hoping they do go with the orchestral arrangement from San Remo (I believe it’s different from the studio version?) for the performance.

    The opening of the song it's typical Mahamood style, he call his music "Morocco pop" (even if his father is from Egypt), so you can clearly hear influence of arabic/morrocan melodies in it. Because the song is about two friends talking each other about their struggle to express love ( Mahamood is 29 yo gay, Blanco 19 yo straight) it make sense that in the beginning there 's a sort of clashing feeeling in the melody, two still different "voices". While they open up to each other expressing universal feelings and struggles about love, they became one statement through the perfect armonization of the two voices and their chemistry on stage. This is why I love this song!

    Here’s a performer that I would really like to get your reaction to. As a background, Angelina Jordan (16) began singing at 1 ½ and making several studio recordings at 6. She’s a self-taught child prodigy, who grew up listening to jazz and the blues. At 7 years old, little barefoot Angelina auditioned for Norway’s Got Talent. Angelina arranged her music and delivered spot-on performances of jazz classics that stunned everyone. She was so young you can even watch her permanent teeth filling in from her first and last performance. The outcome, Angelina swept aside the other finalists and won as a newly turned 8 year-old.
    The first piece is her ‘black and white studio performance’ of "I Put a Spell on You" (Screamin' Jay Hawkins, 1956). At 9 years and 2 weeks old, Angelina had arranged the music for the band, her lyrics, and gave a performance that shouldn't be possible for a 9 year old girl. Many have said she has a very old soul when it comes to music.
    The second piece I would love to get your reaction to is Angelina’s (13) audition for America's Got Talent the Champions. Angelina, as is her way, sang her own unique arrangement of "Bohemian Rhapsody" (Queen, 1975). Not only did she receive a golden buzzer, advancing her to the finals, she got a tweet from Queen for her rendition. Here are the links:

    ***Angelina Jordan is known as "the Barefoot Princess" or "the Barfoot Princess of Jazz". Here's the background on why she goes barefoot whenever she performs on stage or while making a studio recording:
    The story is that when living in the Middle East, at age 6, she came across an orphaned girl earning money by weighing people in the street with a bathroom scale. She noticed how cold it was and that the 6-7 year old girl was not only barefoot, but had scars on her feet. So 6 year old Angelina took off her own shoes, shoes that she loved, and gave them to the girl. Angelina decided she wouldn't wear shoes in her performances to remind her of all the children in the world who had no parents, proper clothes, or shoes. Hence, you will hear her called the "Barefoot Princess", or the "Barefoot Princess of Jazz". Of the encounter, little 6 year old Angelina wrote in her diary: “The world is very strange. Right then and there I felt as if a door in my heart opened up, and it was filled with lots of lights. It was as if there was, from Earth to Heaven, a staircase. I climbed the stairs. To be able to do something for another human - it was such a big thing…hard to describe really.” In 2015, at 9 years of age, Angelina wrote a book about the encounter, making her the youngest published author in Norway. The book and the attire Angelina wore for her AGTC audition were designed by her grandmother who was a child prodigy in art.

    I get what you mean. For me it's wonderful to have different melodies in the verses, it matches so well with the lyrics. In the verses they sing their own stories, but these stories come down to the same feeling in the chorus. I think that's the idea behind it and for me that work beautifully.

    I do not know much about music, my score at school in the subject has been always a solid "F" .
    As I see it, It can be totally wrong, is that this song is built in a way that does not offer "grip" to takle it.
    It provides two "stories" the Mahmood's one in the first verse and Blanco's one in the second.
    As there are two different stories experienced by two different people they might be similar, at points overlapping but remain still two different stories experienced by two different people.
    I don't know up to which point is intentional or not, I think that the music further highlight the similarities between the two stories by providing familiarity, smootness and recurring constructions while still stressing the differences with sudden changes in construction, pace, voice tones, stresses.
    Also the fact that they sing separately, except from the chorus, keeps a clear distinction "that's my story- that's yours" while, in the last phase the melody seems to bring the two narrations togather and, with no "grip" feel like "slipping" into a common narration.
    Another aspect that an Italian speaker would surely pick, which unfortunately gets lost with cc lyrics, is the distress that the two singers transfer when they sing and the contrast the sharpness of the words, spoken with infinite love and sensitivity, at the beginning and love shouts at the end.

    Hey mate!
    I dunno if Mahmood and Blanco actually made a statement as to why we have such dynamic verses during the song, but what I made my mind up with is, as the song tells about a story of two guys who shares their insecurities when it comes about love, at the same time they also wanted to tell it their own way not just with the wording but tone and dynamism.
    Cheers :)

    About Italy in ESC 2016: Michielin was 2° in Sanremo, the winner was Stadio, but the band refused esc becouse they had a tour in the same days and didn't want cancel any date.
    Michielin was pretty young and someone had the bad idea of making a mix of Italian and English for the text.
    in Sanremo 21 she sang with Fedez finishing second behind the Maneskin. in Sanremo 22 she was conductor for Emma's song, she also sang with her in the evening of homage to the song, the one dedicated to the covers.
    the conductor is an important part in the success of a song, usually he/she proposes some orchestrations of the piece to the singer, with the presence of the minimum, medium or massive orchestral part. And the orchestra is also a jury that votes.

    I'm a classical composer and singer and I can assure you that they did a great job with doing two different verses, otherwise it would be too repetitive and simple. Mahmood's verse is actually better than Blanco's as it's more complex and original. You say it doesn't make sense but it DOES. Composition is not about "not making sense". There are no definite rules. There are suggestions that can make a song more memorable but at the same time it would make it boring. This song would be 100 times worse if Blanco's melodic verse was repeated by Mahmood in the beginning. The melody is beautiful when it moves around and brings you to New places.

    • @TheMuserResolute
      @TheMuserResolute  2 роки тому +1

      Heya! Thanks for this. Mahmood’s verse is certainly more complex. I do approach my Eurovision stuff a lot more different to the others I do here on the channel as I look at it from the perspective of the impression it’ll make from 1 listening only (as Italy has one chance to get votes from those, the majority of people who watch Eurovision, that only hear the songs the first time they’re performed).
      I absolutely acknowledge that this is great compositionally. Hopefully it’s enough to connect with audiences from a first listening.
      But you know as a composer that simple doesn’t always equal bad/boring. Absolutely if Mahmood and Blanco’s verses were the same (as Blanco’s), this would be very simple as Blanco’s verse barely moves melodically.
      Either way, as anticipated, this song has grown on me!

    On reflection, this was the best song of the competition. The problem is that they really had to lean into the sort of narrative that the song is about their relationship in their performance to communicate the meaning of the song to people who can’t understand Italian. But of course, the song isn’t actually about their relationship so it’s a bit messy and it’s hard to get the song across to the audience on a first listen.

    It drives me crazy that people need to specify that Mahmood is gay and Blanco is straight, like this would make any difference in their performance. They're two artists with different singing style and background who met at the producer studio (Michelangelo the one playing the piano in this performance) and while he was trying some music decided to share their experiences and do something together. They went home and each of them came out with a verse that then elaborated together with Michelangelo. Obviously they each brought their own style that is appropriate to the song that is a dialogue between two people who are in.a love relationship where one of the two is unable to show his feelings and ends up hurting the other who eventually voice out all his frustration. It makes sense in my opinion that the singers each perform with a different style as they're interpreting a dialogue. The song is written with quite poetic lyrics and is left without specifying the sexual orientation of the couple as the topic is universal and common to any kind of love relationship, Mahmood and Blanco are simply interpreting the song it shouldn't matter their sexual orientation in real life. By the way my cousin is a music teacher, I made her listen to "Rapide" by Mahmood and she told me he sounds so different from any other Italian artist because he applys the Arabic scale, now this means nothing to me but maybe to you makes sense. If you are interested I suggest that you check on UA-cam for "Ghettolimpo full album", is the playlist containing all 15 tracks of Mahmood latest slbum, very peculiar and very modern.

    • @TheMuserResolute
      @TheMuserResolute  2 роки тому +1

      Of course. This is a beautiful piece, don’t get me wrong. My issues are how it’s conveyed on a first listening. I actually think a song like this has much more replayability over the generic pop ones, however, I’m looking at this through a first time listening lens.
      Listening to this for a first time, I knew for a fact it would grow on me (which it’s has), but we want to go to reactions which fulfill our confirmation bias, especially if we’ve already listened to it those many more times (enough time to really completely grasp the meaning and composition). Italy, every year, doesn’t have the luxury of a semi final performance. They only have one chance to grip the listener.
      This song is complex, compositionally.

    7:16 "but there is so much going on melodically, that its hard to connect with and follow" - that is basically the meaning of the words if you look into analyzing the lyrics - so it makes sense again :) The persona does not understand what is going on, why their love doesn't work...

  • @TheSawjones
    @TheSawjones Рік тому

    The melody is beautiful and I do like the storytelling - it sounds like a conversation, back and forth. But I feel like the vocals are too high. At several points, the singers seem to be struggling to hit those high notes. Blanco has such a beautiful, textured voice when he's singing with chest voice, and I think those colors get lost in a falsetto that doesn't work very well with his style. Mahmood also has a beautiful tenor voice, but even he strains in the chorus (also, at 5:13). I wish they had gone down and soft, instead of all the way up when singing "brividi", though that just may be personal preference. I don't enjoy high-pitched vocals.
    I thought that starting at 4:58 Blanco's verse sounded exactly like a trap song, so I googled him (didn't know him beforehand) and found out that he's a rapper/trapper, so that makes sense. It sounds out of place in a ballad, but it makes for an interesting, if a little jarring, contrast.

    It captivated me right a way. But if you have the live performance with lyrics (and you can easily find such video, ua-cam.com/video/4MgMhzfUmiA/v-deo.html ) the composition makes sense. The choices of chords the descending melody, the jumps and delaying/voidance of resolution all make sense. Also the fast rapping part. Try listening to it and reading the lyrics while listening. It grabbed me right a way but I liked it more understanding the lyrics.

      Unfortunately, most people watching Eurovision will only get one listening of this song before voting. Italy has one chance. I don’t think this song lends to it being a mind blowing listening experience on a first listening, which will be to its detriment.
      But two listenings of this already, and it’s definitely growing on me. Whether it wins or not, it’s still a great song 🙂

    Same as judging a song just for its musical composition without listening to the words too, imo.

    • @TheMuserResolute
      @TheMuserResolute  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you. The words are very important, of course. This has already grown on me since, and my worries are how it comes across as a first time listening. For ESC fans who only watch and listen to these songs the first time they’re performed, Italy only has one shot to impress them. This is my worry, that both because of the composition, being watched by those who do not understand Italian, it may struggle to connect.
      It absolutely sucks that English is the most universal language, and as a result, English songs will always have an advantage in ESC, lyrically. Imo, the composition is all the more important when the song is not in English.
      This is why in the last decade, Zitti E Buoni and Amar Pelos Dois could pull off a win - from strong, but easy to digest compositions.
      Can you imagine if Toy by Netta or Heroes by Måns were in their native language?
      I think this will do well because the composition is strong. The performers are emotive, and they’re objectively amazing vocalists. Juries will understand this. But it may not be enough to get them across for the casual ESC fan, whom let’s face it, probably makes up most of the voting.
      I also don’t believe this song should be in English. It’s perfect in Italian.

    I've heard this a few times this far, but it hasn't grown on me yet, and probably won't. It's easy to see why it's one of the fan favourites though, with high quality vocals and interesting melodies.
    I like the theme of the song too, but the English translation doesn't really touch me, which is sometimes an issue with these more poetic Italian songs. Some of the phrases work ok in English too, but some just sound weird, and my Italian isn't nearly strong enough to paint the right pictures.
    My main issue with this song comes down to personal taste though. I just don't enjoy high vocals, however well sung.
