I'm kinda late, sorry for that. I'm french and you are on point my friend. This song is a "love" song, it's really melancholic and about a broken heart that want his half soul back. Even if you didn't understand the langage, you got the whole vibe of the song. We are very proud of him, he deserves to be more famous around the world !

After watching several other performances of this song, I guarantee you that this is even better live! He is phenomenal on stage, probably the best singer this year. Love this song, and it's my #3, but honestly it is because of Slimane. If anyone else was singing it, I'm not sure it would be this incredible.
I wasn't moved either way when I saw his Eurovision video and I know I saw the SemiFinal performance, but I don't remember it. Slimane's Finale performance, however, is something I will never forget. I was so incredibly moved, I was in tears. You're quite right, it is a simple melody with a simple and repetitive chord progression. But he delivers it; he bloody well nails it! I too don't understand French, but for his voice to carry the meaning of that song, evoke such passion and to stir the emotions of the audience like he did...bravo, I say. He was my number 1 for that performance. He did rather well too.

I definitely don’t think it’ll win the contest but I see it doing very well with Juries and likely a surprise top 5 at the end (and well deserved!). He’s got such an unexpectedly emotional voice!

@Thunderworks Yes, this is also a live performance.. But I was talking about live he did at some events in front a lot of people .They are better. Like the one he did at Dora, or the one he did to the arc de triomphe for the new year. Just outstanding!

You haven’t noticed that he is also bringing some of his roots from his Algerian grandpa with this typical intonation that is present in arabic singing few times during the performance. A superb vocalist that once won the Voice French contest some years ago apparently.

You should watch any of his recent live performances, he sings a revamped version with a new intrumental track that includes a more fleshed out stringed section, as well as a big acapella part where he sings 2 meters away from the mic (and you can still hear him fine!). I didn't believe much in his chances with the first version (which is already great in itself though) but the new live version is even better imo!

the way he stepped back in the final to project into the mic, it made it stand out and I think that's why it placed so high. But yeah amazing singing. I just wanted to give him a hug during the entire thing haha.
Talking about the emotions, this song never was between my favorites, but I saw him live in Amsterdam, in the preparty, and that was an epic moment for me, it was so passionately delivered, I could feel his emotions, I felt speechless for a moment, and then I thought this is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. Slimane is massive in France.
He won The Voice France 2016, robbing all french hearts from the blind audition onwards.
Since then, he has released 4 albums: they all monopolized the #1 seat in french charts.
All his concerts in the biggest venues are booked immediately.
He is known to be a very skilled vocalist, with an impressive range and a unique tone. But first and foremost an emotional powerhouse that always delivers perfectly live. He can sing acapella in front of large venues and is not shy to perform on the biggest scenes: he sang Mon Amour for new year's eve on the Champs-Elysées, in front of more than 1 million people.
He is also an amazing songwriter: he composed and wrote most of his own songs, and also has produced songs for the greatests of the french music scen (Amel Bent, Kendji Girac, Florent Pagny, Vitaa, ….)
Up to, recently, the great Lara Fabian: he is co-creating and co-composing her latest album with her, she just released the first song "Ta Peine" (Your Sorrow), with a music video recorded on a sicilian beach, close from her home.

I get really annoyed when unknown music teachers or vocal coaches post their super serious, pseudo-professional reactions and points of views about someone who's a mega star. ...as if they were just a student trying to make it. A little humility would go a long way. Yes, Slimane is huge....Does not need introduction or the feedback of run-of-the mill folks.

Austrian here. I was listening to it along with english subtitles. It is a painful song and it is fucking beautiful. The emotion, the powerful voice and so on. Was one of my favourites along with Croatia and Switzerland for me.

I think the newer version of this, which I assume he will perform at Eurovision, is stronger. The bridge section is way more dynamic and he does an incredible acapella line which just emphasises the build into the last chorus even more.
I think this is a definite contender for jury winner and there is a televote audience for a big male power ballad, as we saw with Marco Mengoni last year.
So while you are probably right that it won't win I think it will be very high on the scoreboard at the end of the night and I wouldn't rule out its chances entirely. Probably needs to be late in the running order to have that chance.

The lyrics are beautifully annunciated and easy to hear as a non-native French-speaker. He's imploring an ex-lover to come back to him - choose the location, I will wait for you there, I will do the impossible for you if you want, do you love me or not.

Malheureusement je pense qu’il a raison, il sera bien placé mais il ne gagnera pas. Barbara Pravi était déjà dans le trio de tête à la même époque, lui n’est que 6e pour le moment. Bon, il faut attendre les rehearsals mais je pense que ce ne sera pas encore pour cette année. Malheureusement, car j’adore Slimane, c’est le plus grand et l’unique artiste Français pour moi.
