Thanks for doing the video. Moving to Minneapolis next summer from outside Boston. Lived briefly in Minneapolis 20+ years ago. Used to ride a lot and it is interesting seeing places -generally the same but guessing lots of changes. Isle bun and coffee makes the best cinnamon rolls -it's like what Cinnabon was based off, but gourmet. Kinda like comparing a great coffee store that Starbucks pretends to be. Interesting Hennepin Ave. doesn't have bike lanes. I remember that being my route from downtown to 1st Ave. South.
Yesterday was a great day to be out! I rode my bike all the way down the Luce line trail. So stoked on the air quality returning. Cheers bud! Edit: Sorry I missed you live!
Thank you very much for doing this...i enjoyed every second of it... maybe i come to minneapolis one day and take you and your wife for dinner...have a great day ❤❤❤
I live in Minneapolis. I have not been to that area in about two year or more. What I notice is so many places have closed. For example at the six minute mark, that area used to be hopping but those bars look shut. Sad. It used to have a very live, "yuppie" vibe but so much crime in that area, riots, shootings, carjackings, "activists" burning things, etc obviously drove the businesses out. Notice also all the boarded up or just empty storefronts. There used to be a nice Apple store down there and REI and those places are toast. That McDonalds down there is notorious for fights, guys, etc. I one got off the 5 bus there and the first thing I saw was two guys throwing punches in the parking lot. The entire area has gone way downhill from the news and people I talk to and this video doesn't really change my view.
Very much a cycle. In the 90s this area was grittier iirc and it had a good run. I think it did well during the retail heyday and was already struggling 2015-2020. I worked in the area from 2017-2019 and there were some red flags. Once the pandemic and riots hit it was a brutal blow to the area The city is clearly invested in improvement in the infrastructure here as they are currently working on redoing the streets to make it better for pedestrians in that central uptown area. I hope it works and that someday more retail businesses come back. I do believe there has been an improvement in some of the things you mentioned but there is still work to do. Thank you for your thoughts. Hopefully someday (I think it will be at least a few years) we can look back on this video and can be proud of what the area recovered from!
The Uptown Transit Hub at the 7 minute mark is one of the worst places in the city, constantly in the news for drug overdoses and crime. MetroTransit in Minneapolis is a horribly run public entity and continues to go downhill.
Yeah, I feel that hub has been in bad shape for awhile and has needed a solution for years. It’s been worse since the pandemic and I want to say it was completely closed off during the construction when I walked by recently. I don’t personally blame metro transit and would place it on other city leadership’s choices but that’s a whole other conversation 🤐
As someone who's thinking about moving to Minneapolis, I really appreciate how many walking tour videos you have of this place!
Thank you! Glad they are helpful
