    I faced this weather when I was at navy, and I loved it!
    In Brazilian Navy we have this saying "good weather does not make a good sailor!"
    I believe that the most secure vehicle on earth is a boat.

    teal peoples who haven't been through a cyclone / hurricane don't understand that its not just the speed of the wind but is how it is like a hammer as each gusts just gets a little stronger and then the next etc - this is what destroys the houses drags anchors etc - it is a unique feeling and why do they always seem to happen at night ? - glad all the cruisers were safe / so some good anchors and lots of chain and rode - well done all from rear armchair admiral (retired) jim

    Emma that's funny, tattoos. I was scared for you folks. It was all your little Mother could do to stand against the wind. Enjoyed hearing you play the violin. Beautiful. Thank you Emma. Thank you for sharing possibly one of the scariest part of your journey with me/us. Compass even tried helping. He knew something was up. Have a wonderful week Teal, Lihn, Emma, & Compass. i'm so thankful you didn't have to go through Hurricane Michael. I don't remember the max wind but downtown gust were recorded to 202 miles per hour. We didn't loose much as other people and glad our manufactured home did really well although we did not stay. Most people stayed thinking it would be a minimal hurricane. When we got home we got miss put because the destruction was so bad. Could not tell where i was at. I had a sailboat that i sold two years earlier and it would have been lost. All the boats at the marina were lost. You are blessed. Thanks for sharing with us.

    wow, quite some wind
    Did not even know that part of the world got Typhoons, thought it was the wrong side of the Ocean for that.... the wind being what it was, I am really pleasantly surprised there was no damage to anything you could not take down... weather netting and such.
    also, just to say, that anchorage looked astoundingly beautiful

    My first hurricane was when I was 3-4 in the early 60s when I was on vacation with Mom and Dad in Daytona Beach. The storm was forecast to make landfall in Daytona so we had to leave our small beachfront hotel. I still remember getting up early in the morning and Mom was stuffing us with all the food in the kitchenette that would spoil. All the while the radio was telling people to leave and fill up their gas tanks. We left for Orlando to find a motel there. I still remember going to a store where we got some things and Mom let me get a toy. That night the lightening was so bright and constant that when the power went out, Mom could still see to read her book. The storm actually hit further north in St Augustine but when we returned to our hotel in Daytona, the ground and lawn up to 10 feet behind the seawall was washed away. Almost 60 years ago and I still remember. I wish Emma at least 60 years to remember her first hurricane! 👍☺️

    In conditions like that, I put 2 bridles on with one taking the initial load during lulls, but both working in the gusts. Plus you have a back up if one explodes.

    Just watched your video with interest. The whole debate re one or two anchors is interesting. in the old days, they used to talk about two anchors but with modern anchors I think one is just fine-- and you guys proved it. I'm a Excel fan myself-- won't own a boat without one-- survived 60 knots at anchor in NZ that swung 170 degs.. Interestingly I did actually put a second anchor at before it all started, the main lesson I walked away with was that all the second anchor did was tangle up in the first one! BTW, who designed your cat? It looks interesting. Phil

    You where pretty lucky. When I was 13 school just started. Hurricane FRAN was close to my state they thought it was going to hit Florida. Then SC. It was a category 3. It hit my state. At Topsail beach many beach houses, sailboats ended in the salt marsh, or where just destroyed. I was at school when it was right at my doorstep. It rained, wind got worse during school.
    My granddaddy picked me up he took me to get ice cream after school. The clouds where very low to the ground. When I got home. I watched the weather channel, and the news as I did my homework. They said a tornado was near some land that NC State owns.
    Mom was trying to do a meeting for work. She canceled it. She drove her friend to her house and home when the storm was getting worse. She said trash cans where in the streets. By 7:00 after supper we could see power lines snapping. Our little Yorkie did not like it because she had to go to the bathroom when it was raining. She hated getting wet. By midnight we lost power. Next morning we saw trees every where. A mall was flooded. We did not get power till about a week later.

    Teals awesome little cat that could..compass must be jealous.. great prep drills.. glad this was only the followup but I was still biting my fingernails watching you without life preservers on.. basik and you all rode that out like riders on the storm.. sure glad Linh didn't slip off there with no life preserver on.. Linh promise me forever as sure footed as you are no acrobatics next time without a life preserver.. and learn how to swim still...... That could have turned out much different than it looked from the circumstances of your anchorage placements.. a lesson learned from basik taming that storm...what an astonishing safe and beautiful boat capable and able to hold it's own even in 70 mph wind.. simply a remarkable job rebuilding that boat teal....

    A storm is force 10, wind speed 48-55 knots
    A hurricane is force 12, wind speed 64-71 knots. 😂
    I’ve been caught out in a hurricane, my first trip to sea. Crossing from the U.K. to Canada. Carrying iron ore. The ship was all aft accommodation. Fully loaded, you couldn’t see the deck at all at times. It was like we was following the fo'c'sle 😂

    Sheesh and you're right on the outer _edge_ of the storm! I can't even imagine how much worse it is for those trapped closer to the eye!! Can you imagine being a sailor back in the days before GPS and even before radio, where something like this could take you completely off-guard and unprepared?! No wonder sailing back then was _so_ deadly for _so_ many sailors! It's still _really_ dangerous now, but a whole lot less thanks to the wonders of modern technology that allows forewarning and proper preparation and the ability to seek safe habour. You lovely peeps took the storm like absolute champs, Emma included - which is very impressive for one as young as her! :) Earned yourself a new subscriber, and I shall now proceed to totally binge-watch all your uploads 😁

    Glad to see the crew of Basik pull through another adventure safely.
    Good prep work to begin with- paid dividends later for the boat & crew.
    Compass helps out knowing something big is headed his way- priceless.
    Emma your violin playing is getter better I must say- impressive.
    Nervous eating habits- Linh & Emma chow down, Teal passes on nourishments.
    Sometimes cruising is fun- sometimes it's not, from one extreme to another.
    Thumbs up to all who anchored and survived this experience.
    I have survived a few hurricanes in my day - Agnes was 30 days, not 30 hour's worth.
    Safe travels ahead now that the worst part is over with for the crew of Basik.

    • @OnboardLifestyle
      @OnboardLifestyle  2 роки тому +5

      The Monohulls did surf back and forth much more then I ever expected in the stiffer winds. We faced the wind with our wide stance much better. The down side was that when we saw a quick burst of a 50-60 knots, we could feel basik lift until the ground tackle could pull us back down.

    Having recently moved to the Southwest of the US, I follow all the weather. I was watching Kay form and head your way. Glad to see everything went well. We were originally in the cone of Ian (far enough in that it would have been a tropical storm) but it kept wiggling a little south and then east. We saw none of it. Although, my apartment complex sent out notices that we were to evacuate if told too. They didn't want anyone trying to ride it out in our apartments. I taught myself to read the radar and to track the weather when I moved here. I am shocked at how few people do track these storms from the coast of Africa.

    I was surprised at how stable Basic was even in the height of the storm. Your prep work, emergency preparedness drills and storm tracking were textbook for any sailor to learn from. I once rode out a typhoon in open water on a ship, But it was an aircraft carrier and we had all the aircraft triple chained down and it was the only time I ever felt the USS Kitty Hawk move side to side. the only thing you ever really feal on a ship that big is the rise and fall of the bow. But as the video unfolds, she is right in the midst of mom and dad methodically bagging sails, securing and backing up rigging, setting anchors and resetting anchors, stowing boards and generally showing calm, planned out steps to prep. Even cooking meals ahead. Not a problem - these folks have been here before, even if she hasn't. Good job to one and all!

    Thanks for another great video and sharing your experience with us. For us sailing nerds, I appreciate the info on your anchor. Can you tell us how much scope you had out, all chain or chain and nylon, the max/min tide during the storm, max wind, etc? Cheers!

      We saw wind speeds in the low to mid 60 knot range (69-75 mph). Basik road it out with 150' of chain, 10' of rode & bridal, in 10-18' of water. Puerto Don Juan is very shallow on the SE corner and we were anchored right on the shelf. The core of the bay is 40-50' deep were most of the other boats were anchored with 2-3 times the chain payed out.

    I was on a boat (Nauticat 36F) although I was in a very safe harbor but there were several times I was scared for my life all night! Tomorrow morning, when the storm was almost over, about ten big boats (on land) were seriously damaged! It was a very scary experience that I hope never to happen again.

    • @OnboardLifestyle
      @OnboardLifestyle  2 роки тому +2

      There is always that risk. Sometimes we feel being at anchor during a storm is almost safer than on a dock due to damage from the pilings, or other boats not safely secured whereas at anchor, you are spaced out. Stay safe out there!

    I may have missed it in the commentary, but what were the peak wind gusts recorded? All boats will drag at some point. Yours was well secured and you had decent back up plans in case a gust dislodged you. Still, all boats will drag at some point. It looked like you could have handled considerably more if needed.

    I wonder how a full keel mono-hull boat (like a Westsail 32) rides at anchor during a hurricane versus a catboat like Basic? Any pros or cons. I was very impressed with how to cat rode at anchor. Great video, as always.

    • @OnboardLifestyle
      @OnboardLifestyle  2 роки тому +4

      There are pros and cons to every boat but in this case the edge went to the multihulls. The monohulls at anchor would drift back and forth letting their beam hit the wind at 90 degrees and then heal over drastically. At times I wondered how much load was on their anchors and if they would hold. The catamarans in Don Juan did much better with their wider stance. They tended to point directly into the wind with their ground tackle bridal 25' apart.
