    My first hurricane was when I was 3-4 in the early 60s when I was on vacation with Mom and Dad in Daytona Beach. The storm was forecast to make landfall in Daytona so we had to leave our small beachfront hotel. I still remember getting up early in the morning and Mom was stuffing us with all the food in the kitchenette that would spoil. All the while the radio was telling people to leave and fill up their gas tanks. We left for Orlando to find a motel there. I still remember going to a store where we got some things and Mom let me get a toy. That night the lightening was so bright and constant that when the power went out, Mom could still see to read her book. The storm actually hit further north in St Augustine but when we returned to our hotel in Daytona, the ground and lawn up to 10 feet behind the seawall was washed away. Almost 60 years ago and I still remember. I wish Emma at least 60 years to remember her first hurricane! 👍☺️

    Being a Florida native, people just can't understand the power of hurricane winds. Next time your driving 74mph put your arm out of the window... and that's the start of a Catagory1 hurricane.
    Cat1 = 95
    Cat2 = 110
    Cat3 = 129
    Cat4 = 156
    Cat5 = 157+

    i'm so thankful you didn't have to go through Hurricane Michael. I don't remember the max wind but downtown gust were recorded to 202 miles per hour. We didn't loose much as other people and glad our manufactured home did really well although we did not stay. Most people stayed thinking it would be a minimal hurricane. When we got home we got miss put because the destruction was so bad. Could not tell where i was at. I had a sailboat that i sold two years earlier and it would have been lost. All the boats at the marina were lost. You are blessed. Thanks for sharing with us.

But as the video unfolds, she is right in the midst of mom and dad methodically bagging sails, securing and backing up rigging, setting anchors and resetting anchors, stowing boards and generally showing calm, planned out steps to prep. Even cooking meals ahead. Not a problem - these folks have been here before, even if she hasn't. Good job to one and all!

    I forgot how to read that instrument on your cabin wall. Could you explain it. What was the strongest winds that you saw and what was that little sail on the running back stays of the two mono hulls for?

    • @OnboardLifestyle
      @OnboardLifestyle  Рік тому +3

      That instrument measures the barometric pressure. Pressure gradient force, is the force produced by differences in barometric pressure between two regions and is responsible for the flow of air from a region of high pressure to a region of low pressure. We saw winds in the low to mid 60 knot range ( 69-75 mph). The sail you saw was called a riding sail. It is used to help a monohulls face the wind in extreme conditions.

    I was on a boat (Nauticat 36F) although I was in a very safe harbor but there were several times I was scared for my life all night! • @OnboardLifestyle
      @OnboardLifestyle  Рік тому +2

      There is always that risk. Sometimes we feel being at anchor during a storm is almost safer than on a dock due to damage from the pilings, or other boats not safely secured whereas at anchor, you are spaced out. Stay safe out there!

    I wonder how a full keel mono-hull boat (like a Westsail 32) rides at anchor during a hurricane versus a catboat like Basic? Any pros or cons. I was very impressed with how to cat rode at anchor. Great video, as always.

    • @OnboardLifestyle
      @OnboardLifestyle  Рік тому +4

      There are pros and cons to every boat but in this case the edge went to the multihulls. The monohulls at anchor would drift back and forth letting their beam hit the wind at 90 degrees and then heal over drastically. At times I wondered how much load was on their anchors and if they would hold. The catamarans in Don Juan did much better with their wider stance. They tended to point directly into the wind with their ground tackle bridal 25' apart.

    ,The second anchor was set on a buoy? So if you needed it what would you do?
    Surely best to set it on a longer rode than the primary anchor so under no load then if you needed it, it would be instantly available?

    • @OnboardLifestyle
      @OnboardLifestyle  Рік тому +2

      The secondary anchor was set at twice the distance of the primary anchor. The float was only to mark the location so other boats are aware of it's location and was attached to the boats forward cleats.

    • @OnboardLifestyle
      @OnboardLifestyle  Рік тому +3

      To where? This storm had painted us in to a corner. Can't run south, that is toward the Hurricane. Can't go east, anchorages in San Carlos and Guaymas are unsafe for heavy weather with zero slips available for multihulls. Can't flee north, Only two ports with marinas with no availabilities and are not equipped for extreme weather events. Our best option was to hunker down where we did. Puerto Don Juan is a well known hurricane hole and certainly lived up to it's reputation.

    Hey Guys, that was a great clinic on reading the weather, planning for the weather, getting to a hurricane hole and preparing the boat for the boat for the storm! Liked the way you had the halyards and foil extrusions were tied down, and of course the clear decks :)

    • @OnboardLifestyle
      @OnboardLifestyle  Рік тому +7

      After the sails were removed we had a bit of a blow a day before Kay hit. We were surprised how much the foil reacted in the wind (30 knots) so we secured them for the stronger winds to come. They did great!

    Thanks for another great video and sharing your experience with us. For us sailing nerds, I appreciate the info on your anchor. Can you tell us how much scope you had out, all chain or chain and nylon, the max/min tide during the storm, max wind, etc? Cheers!

    • @OnboardLifestyle
      @OnboardLifestyle  Рік тому +3

      We saw wind speeds in the low to mid 60 knot range (69-75 mph). Basik road it out with 150' of chain, 10' of rode & bridal, in 10-18' of water. Puerto Don Juan is very shallow on the SE corner and we were anchored right on the shelf. The core of the bay is 40-50' deep were most of the other boats were anchored with 2-3 times the chain payed out.

    teal peoples who haven't been through a cyclone / hurricane don't understand that its not just the speed of the wind but is how it is like a hammer as each gusts just gets a little stronger and then the next etc - this is what destroys the houses drags anchors etc - it is a unique feeling and why do they always seem to happen at night ? - glad all the cruisers were safe / so some good anchors and lots of chain and rode - well done all from rear armchair admiral (retired) jim
