You are quickly becoming one of my most favorite coffee content providers. You pull a lot of information from different sources and present it clearly. Thank you for comparing the cups of coffee towards the end of the video, as that’s what matters most.
Your review of this grinder is the best. Wow, you really took it to the bank on this one. I like looking at expensive grinders for the same reason I like looking at expensive art. Both experiences are the only way I will ever get close enough...
Mind blowing. The details you go into while talking about coffee related gear is amazing. I'm in awe and very thankfully to have people like you in this space!
As someone who has spent many hours ripping apart Ceado grinders. I can tell you that brass grind adjustment rings that are internally threaded can strip super easily. Nothing ruins your day faster than a 3k grinder getting cross threaded.
These are unlike caedo from my experience, albeit limited. This is the most robust brass I've seen. And I Def have accidentally tried cross threaded (again, accidentally) and it didn't happen. Not saying it would never, but these grooves are strong and deep
Towards the end: what are the other two grinders you say do filter/espresso as well (bearing in mind burr geometry is what matters most and grinders like eg1 swaps burrs so easily)
What a great video. Thank you, Lance. Having a Ditting 807 Lab Sweet as a universal home grinder, a comparison was very interesting to hear. Will you do a dedicated video on the 807? What do you think about espresso taste/workflow and alignment/internals? Also, is there an easy way to make it a bit shorter? Like a single dose hopper with a gate. I tried one from Eureka Mignon Specialita, but it didn't fit right. Can you retrofit an EK43's Mini Dosing Hopper or something similar?
You definitely did not disappoint with this one. So glad you incorporated the sweet lab into this too. Now the only issue is they are going to run out before summer when I can actually order one haha.
wish you did more espresso comparisons with it. but cool to see that you went right to the filter test which tells a lot about the grinder's ability to switch
40 minutes long and I'm still wishing for more! Maybe a separate video just to compare it to other titan grinders? How does it perform next to a well aligned EK43? How about that EG1 in the back? So many questions!
A shame you do not pick this up Lance 😢 . I’m looking for replacing my Mahlkönig E65S, a great grinder, but want less retention. Thought the only way was to go for a EG1 or so. Now I see this! A low retention grinder with a hopper. I’m confused 😅
Great video as always. Have been using the Monolith Max for awhile and am finding the workflow less then ideal. Looks like this could be a great opinion.
Huge difference between the two, so keep in mind that it will be a massive change in flavor. BUT you'll like the workflow for the most part. I feel I showed it pretty well in the video.
I saw one of these while cruising instagram about half a year back and immediately wanted to know more. Now that I've got a better idea of how massive it is i really want one, but like 50-75% as big. Also, I'm surprised you didn't cover the fact that you can add pictures to the little screen! The memes are already cropping up
👋 I'm using the Weber KEY for espresso purposes. I am thinking of purchasing a flat burrs grinder for both espresso and filter. The main purpose will be espresso.(Of course, some grinders will need to replace burrs to suit their purpose.) What's the best choice among Monolith Flat, Max, Bentwood, SSP 98mm grinder (ex: lagom P100)? Many say that Monolith is generally not good in filter coffee. I think big flat burrs will be contrasting with Mazzer conical. I usually enjoy light roast filter coffee and light~medium roast single espresso.
these grinders are all very good, it's going to come down to burr availability and which type would suit your taste and thus which machine would allow you to install those burrs.
@25:25 ... You say, "I have to open the hopper obviously", can someone explain why this is 'obvious'? I understand why we open the air vent if we are pouring gas from an old school gas can, or on some laundry detergents, but wouldn't the beans fall down and grind regardless of if air could get in from the top? Thanks.
Until now, I didn't realized that Thonet was German. I always though, he was Czech, because factory is and was in Czech Republic. Btw, I am sitting right now on Thonets bentwood chair :)
Loved the vid! Your description of those lab sweet burrs sound similar to those 64mm gorilla Gear burrs, how do you think they compare? For filter and espresso?
Great review again, not that I ever going to consider owning a commercial monster ever again, now that I have the option not too, also I think it’s a given SSP is going to replicate it at some point if it gets hyped enough, they are already coming out with a sweet 64 version later this year, although it probably not going to be an exact replica just as their pre 2015 EK wasn’t. Also the new EK coffee burrs leaves allot to be desired compared to the old.
Maybe they should take a chapter from LaMarzocco and make a scaled down home version? Only left with one question after a great presentation…all that tech…and a timed dosing? In practical use, I don’t see the value of them on a cheap grinder…depending on the beans and the roast, unless I miss my guess, dosing by time delivers a range of dosing by weight….
Thank you for the deep dive! Amazing info. Would love if you would do the same for the Ditting 807 Lab Sweet. More specifically, espresso use vs pour over, alignment and burr tech. Also home use and single dosing and how it would compare to other "endgame" grinders when you look at price, availability, and customer support. Any chance that's coming...?
How does the filter coffee taste compared to the EK43 or Eg-1 equipped with ultra burrs? I'm curious in terms of clarity, sweetness, and body. Is Bentwood absolutely lacking in performance?(The burrs size is relatively small.) Otherwise, how are the tendencies different?
Burr size, with newer advents in burr tech, is not nearly as relevant or "indicative of quality" as they used to be, although very large flat (95mm+) burrs do tend to have some inherently desirable traits, from what 's been reported typically in regards to clarity and forgiveness. Inherently desirable traits which they certainly should have, what at ~$600 before even going into whatever grinder they are used with.
Hi Lance, once again a great video from you! Many thanks for all your awesome work - keep going on!!! I am now a very happy owner and homeuser of a BENTWOOD, Manuel just brought me mine last week. Manuel is such a good person and nice guy, with a great sense for coffee and huge knowledge about it and he provides an incredibly good service! Now please let me aske you one question. How did the brewing time (espresso / single dosing) change for you if you changed grind size? Roughly how many seconds per 10 microns? Many thanks again for all you great work and many thanks in advance for chekcing my request and your according feedback. With warmest and heavily caffeinated regards form Switzerland, Andreas 😀
Excited for your upcoming Xeoleo Ghost Burr overview! I’ve been looking into upgrading to one from a hand grinder for awhile, will be interesting to see if you recommend.
Hey Lance, great review as always. But just wondering, is it intentional for the side camera to have a dreamy/foggy effect? or is that the lens? ... it is a little bit distracting. Thanks :)
Dang bro...Diting, EG on the bar, the Decent of course, and what looks like an El Rocio. Scrooge McDuck of coffee over here. I'd love to see a deep dive, comparison of some of those high end machines that do pressure profiling with a Londinium L24.
Will the retention get lower when the burrs are seasoned you think? Had this grinder for just few weeks and probably just run 2 pounds through it but even if I run in a minute and use the below there is usually around 0,5 gram missing.
This is my second watch of this video since it’s come out. At the end there you note two other grinders that could match the Bentwood but you don’t mention which ones, mind me asking? Thanks.
bentwoulda, bentshoulda, bentcoulda, anyway, you get it ... :P ... awesome video thanks!!! ... curious: what are the other 2 grinders you quickly mentioned at the end that shine in both filter and espresso in your opinion? cheers!
I know you didn’t ask me, but the only 2 grinders I can think of that are often mentioned to be capable for filter and espresso are the Lab Sweet and the Comandante C40. Would love to know if Lance was thinking of something else though.
Wow, that's a really good look at this grinder. How important do you think the pre-breaker is in achieving its unique distribution curve? Are SSP unimodals the most aligned with your preferences? Is there much more clarity available in larger burrs beyond the SSP 64mm unimodals?
Awesome review! I love the level of detail. I was just wondering if you’ve tried the bentwood with a Nordic roast (espresso and/or filter), and if so what your experience was. Thanks.
Hi Lance, I just had another question I wondered if you could help me with. I've owned a Barista Express for a few months now, and one thing I'm noticing is that there's quite a bit of grinds coming out into the espresso shot. At the bottom of my glass I'll see a bunch of grinds...very undesirable. Not only that, but even with nothing in the portafilter grinds still come out in the water leaving the spouts. I've tried emailing Breville but they haven't been helpful. Do you think this could be a grinder issue where it's creating inconsistent fineness? I really have no idea. Any help is appreciated, keep it up making the great informative videos!
I notice that Be Hambela. shirt there. I'm considering which greens to buy next... an Ehtiopian Natural Yirg Birirsa Kafe or Ethiopian Natural Guji Hambela. Any thoughts? 😃
Hi Lance, this is unrelated but I was wondering if you could do a detailed video on how to adjust the OPV on the BDB? I have had one for a few months but it is set to 10bar and I would like adjust to between 8-9bar
Thank you for the exhaustive review. You answered a lot of questions I’ve had about this grinder for a while. You mentioned that magnetically seated burrs have a tendency to get grinds behind them; have you personally had an issue with that or known anyone who has had the problem? Just curious, this is the first time I’ve heard that come up. Do you have any thoughts about the role the pre-breaker/auger plays on the particle size distribution and the resulting cup quality? It seems given the design of the grinder that it should yield an identical grind and cup no matter if you’re single dosing or if there’s a hopper of coffee on top of the grinder. Do you think that is in fact the case? It would be fun to explore the above question by comparing the Bentwood to two other grinders, one with flat burrs and one with conicals, and grinding a single dose vs a dose with a hopper of coffee sitting above the burrs with each of the three and comparing the resulting grind and cup quality. I suppose you’d want both to have as close to a direct grind path as possible to try to minimize the retention variable and the impact of a different feeding system/grind path. Maybe a single dosed Key and one with a kg or so of coffee sitting above the burrs would work for the conical comparison? You could cut away a dog cone or something to contain the coffee above the burrset. EK 43 would probably be a good candidate for the flat burr comparison. Thank you again, I really enjoy your content and your affable demeanor:)
Now for the less colorful and more thoughtful look on your review ! In general it was very focused on the burr quality which is great ! One point , a more extensive explanation of the program features and how the cooling fans work would be insightful to the barista coffee shop owners to see how the programmable features and the cooling functions work in more detail , but I assume your focus was on the home hobbyist /aficionado . In general awesome review of the Bentwood 63 commercial coffee grinder . A longer video would not be well served well ; but a second video for the coffee shop owners would be nice .
Somehow the zero/lock point doesn't move on mine after cleaning and reassembling. Also, I never heard the fans turn on, are they temperature-triggered maybe?
Great video, wish it were even longer :) I guess for your palate the highly unimodal SSP style (in the 98mm size, HU) is preferrable for espresso? I'm also a clarity fiend so think I will probably stick with my Max but really curious to taste espressos from one of these. (What's your favorite grinder for clarity for drip? I like the old EK cast burrs for clarity, was never happy with 98mm HU for drip.)
I enjoy both unimodal and bimodal for espresso. Really depends on the style I am pulling. The Bentwood is a top 3 for me, for sure. It does all the styles better than any other burr, in my opinion. of course, there are burrs, like SSP unimodal, that does high clarity shots better (turbo, allonge, etc) and others that do traditional shots better (shuriken). anyway, i digress. As for filter, old Ek resharpened by hansung are quite unique. I do love my SSP MP burrs though. I usually just use an Ode with SSP MP for filter. Easy, no fuss, and consistently tasty.
@@LanceHedrick thanks so much for the detailed reply. I have swapped between Shruiken LM, SW, and 98mm HU (unimodal style) and greatly preferred HU for the turbo shots that I pull so now feel like I'm not missing out on too much with the bentwood. (there were a few people on the DE forums pushing the Bentwood very hard, and from your review, it seems great but not better than HU for new-school espresso.) I should give unimodal burrs another shot for drip. I always found my 98mm HU tasted kinda... hollow? simple? I hate the word complexity in coffee but very clean but lacking complexity. (I also don't really care for sieved coffee.) I wish it were simple like "unimodal good bimodal bad" but I guess it's not.
Yeah. There has been a huge push for bentwood in those forums. I think some of that is just buyer's confirmation bias. They want to think the $2500 investment is better than all. Now, don't get me wrong. I love the bentwood. But there simply isn't one grinder to rule them all. Or one burr to rule them all, for that matter. The bentwood is Supreme not because of burr geometry but the construction. It makes incredibly sweet coffees, but, for me, I get nuanced complexity (loads of florals especially) with more unimodal burr sets. Hence my love of the MP, or brew burr v2. Bentwood is like cast in that it is a great mix of acidity and sweetness and body. Definitely better valance. If I had to choose on grinder for my life, it would be bentwood. Good news is I don't have to. I can have a dedicated espresso, dedicated filter, etc. Lol
@@LanceHedrick If you chose two grinders(with burrs) for espresso and filter, what would you choose subjectively? for home I usually drink light~medium roasting such as Onyx, lacabra, sey and Collective. There is no budget limit, but a reasonable price is good. But I don't want to compromise on performance, completeness, and ease of use because of the price.
Everything I have with membrane covered buttons gets holes in the overlay. I would be wary of investing in such a thin and fragile interface unless it came with a large pack of replacement membranes.
For reference the Mahlkoenig e65s vs the e65 gbw. The only difference is that ine grinfds by weight. Its twice the price. A scale ist enough because it needs to stop early enough sonit doesn't grind to much and that programming is expensive
@@bp060 thanks for that info. Seems like a money grab by the manufacturer to me, when considering the Vario and the Vario W are 70$ apart, for example. 🤷🏻♂️
This is an amazing grinder, but I wish to have the best home electric grinder for way less. Should I wait for more of your reviews or should I check your older coffee grinder videos? I am looking for a "timeless" espresso-focused grinder that generally wouldn't need anymore upgrades for the next decade. I also do not know what kind of espresso I like which the "old-style" and modern espresso. I have tried the modern cause its in most cafes but I never tried the "old" espresso.
Lance! Great videos! Can you advise: for someone like me, DE1 pro + French press… would you recommend: Bentwood, Weber Eg-1, Niche, other…. for taste. It seems the BW64 is the daddy, with near clarity as unimodal, but excellent mouthfeel such as the Niche or high uniformity flat burr…. So, for someone who loves smooth, full flavor but NOT sour or overly bright. THANKS
Bent-did you find the settings close when comparing with the ditting? I only ask since both companies have dial settings in microns. Also, I believe the lab sweet burrs were modeled after an older set of cast 804 burrs. I'm fairly certain those are what I have in my KR804.
@@LanceHedrick Interesting! I'm fairly certain that the number dial on my 804 is intended to correspond to microns (i.e. grinding at 4 = 400 microns). I'm not familiar with the particular ditting you're using though. Thanks for the reply!
Great vid! Hopefully, I'll get to check it out in my lifetime. Side note: will you review the C40, and why a lot of people end up competing with it for brewers vs the EKs/Ditting/Webers of the world?
I've had a c40 for a few years and have loved it! Taste wise I don't think it fully compares with the grinders you listed but for it's price it easily close enough to justify purchasing one in my opinion. Im also only talking my experience with filter coffee. If you want it for espresso then that's a different story.

41 minutes long review HELL YEAH! This is how it’s done!
Mind blowing. The details you go into while talking about coffee related gear is amazing. I'm in awe and very thankfully to have people like you in this space!
a 40 minute video from Lance? it's like Christmas all over again. I have an exam in 2 days but f that-i deserve this break!
This is mostly the best review would ever be on the UA-cam for this grinder. Thanks a ton, Lance.

I’m guessing Weber EG-1 and Ditting Lab Sweet
Love the dog in the video. The amount of details in this review is crazy. Great material
Wow thank you Lance. I'm so excited by this grinder. What a great all-rounder for both commercial and home use
Reviews are always killer. But your dog’s casual cameo around the 14:30 mark really made it.
What a great video. Thank you, Lance. Having a Ditting 807 Lab Sweet as a universal home grinder, a comparison was very interesting to hear.

Hi Lance, this is unrelated but I was wondering if you could do a detailed video on how to adjust the OPV on the BDB? I have had one for a few months but it is set to 10bar and I would like adjust to between 8-9bar
Hey man! How do you like the eureka drogheria that's in the background?
Benzwood or 807 LAB sweet for brew/bach/ Poor over in coffee shop?
Now for the less colorful and more thoughtful look on your review ! In general it was very focused on the burr quality which is great ! One point , a more extensive explanation of the program features and how the cooling fans work would be insightful to the barista coffee shop owners to see how the programmable features and the cooling functions work in more detail , but I assume your focus was on the home hobbyist /aficionado . In general awesome review of the Bentwood 63 commercial coffee grinder . A longer video would not be well served well ; but a second video for the coffee shop owners would be nice .
The grinder is cool, but I love your dog! 😄
❤❤Looks expensive..will I afford it?😂... question does it have torque indications on screw tightening any info from the manufacturer when opening it?
thanks Lance, would much appreciate if you could review the eureka ORO single dose
So now I need a comparison with a similar price, maybe VA Mythos
How does the flavour profile of these burrs compare to the Gorilla Gear burrs?
Should we not move on from an acronym for something as simple as a spray bottle? Its a little gate-keepery. Call it a spritzer or something.
great video. thanks!
Nice job! 👍
Somehow the zero/lock point doesn't move on mine after cleaning and reassembling.
Also, I never heard the fans turn on, are they temperature-triggered maybe?
US models are a bit different. His point moved because he probably did not install the bearing ring seated. Happened to me too.
Not temp triggered. They were on. The mic was likely too far away (on my lapel)
Great video, wish it were even longer :)
I guess for your palate the highly unimodal SSP style (in the 98mm size, HU) is preferrable for espresso?
(there were a few people on the DE forums pushing the Bentwood very hard, and from your review, it seems great but not better than HU for new-school espresso.)
I should give unimodal burrs another shot for drip.
Lol
@@LanceHedrick If you chose two grinders(with burrs) for espresso and filter, what would you choose subjectively? for home
I usually drink light~medium roasting such as Onyx, lacabra, sey and Collective.
There is no budget limit, but a reasonable price is good. But I don't want to compromise on performance, completeness, and ease of use because of the price.
What grinder would you recommend for highest clarity in pourover?
Thank you for these reviews!
SSP MP
Lagom P100 with LU/brew burrs
Titus Nautilus with what he sells as brew burrs
You have great options presented above! I love when commenters help lol. Especially when they're correct haha!
Everything I have with membrane covered buttons gets holes in the overlay. I would be wary of investing in such a thin and fragile interface unless it came with a large pack of replacement membranes.
I never quite understood grinding by time. Can you please elaborate on the rationale of time vs weight?
Cheaper to install for Cafe use.
@@LanceHedrick I would have to imagine that at the 3-4k mark it should be negligible in terms of price to put a scale in though, no?
George Howell 👏👏👏
Lol
How was the husky always hidden
THANKS
Oh btw, bentwoulda bentshoulda, bentohiforgotbutDID
Bent-did you find the settings close when comparing with the ditting? I only ask since both companies have dial settings in microns.
Also, I believe the lab sweet burrs were modeled after an older set of cast 804 burrs. I'm fairly certain those are what I have in my KR804.
Haha! Incredible first word.
My ditting filter is not shown in microns.
@@LanceHedrick Interesting! I'm fairly certain that the number dial on my 804 is intended to correspond to microns (i.e. grinding at 4 = 400 microns). I'm not familiar with the particular ditting you're using though.
Thanks for the reply!
Well done my friend. Bent should would could :)
