The show began great. Till Smith became an irritant. In real life, he would've been left behind- which in one episode they kicked him out. When survival so far from home, you cannot afford to keep a Smith among the group. The shows last season was lousy. I do like the Smith, Will, robot comical interactions.
This was a 'family' show at an early TV viewing time and had to pull back on the seriousness - According to an interview with Bill Mumy, supposedly it was too scary for the kiddies of the time and after the first season they were forced to tone it down for the time slot it was in. They were also competing with Batman (which was just as, if not even sillier) Dr. Smith was suppose to be killed off in that season but his villainous escapades went comedic to, according to Johnathan Harris, "Save his job."
I always wondered how all the times the Jupiter 2 crashed there was never even a scratch on the belly of the ship.
It was a tough little ship all right.
Force field surrounding ship - first season the ship had a force field glow - effect was removed for cost
The family and the pilot were very forgiving toward a guy that tried to kill them more than once.
He was also the reason they got lost.
