I just started warming up to the design after seeing Steve Harrington rocking them in Stranger Things. This is a classic silhouette and I could have copped this for a great price if I was a year earlier lol. There's no way I'm spending over $100 for a shoe that used to retail for $60-70 bucks and is not that "popular" anymore.

The Cortez has been my go to shoe for the last 5-6 years now. I’ve had about 12 pairs of the red white and blue color way. It is literally the only pair of sneakers I’ve bought over those years. Shocked when I couldn’t find them, and saddened by the resale prices.
I came across this video while trying to find some Cortez like most other people 😂 I luckily found them last week in a Nike factory outlet! There were many sizes and options in women’s Cortez. However, men’s Cortez was all sold out, not a single shoe was in stock in any color variety or size. I bought the classic red n blue one for 70$ Not sure if it was old stock, or Nike is restocking it.
To add to the whole discontinuing to create hype theory. We have to point out the fact, that Nike's recently bulked up the number of waffle one colorways, introduced the air max dawn (a shoe that probably takes inspiration from the cortez), introduced the brand new waffle debut (sitting around the same price point as a pair of standard cortez at $80), they just recently reintroduced the air Pegasus 83! I don't think this is fully intentional, I think they just brought out the debut, and Pegasus 83 just because. But I also think, that if the cortez does become hype, they'll offer up those retro or retro inspired silhouettes to customers looking for an alternative to the cortez when they inevitably become harder and harder to acquire.
I was freaking out cause i coundn't find them anywhere, watched your video and figured it all out, it's the most confortable, sexy and lighweight everyday shoe ever made by nike in my opinion. Ty for the video brother!😃

Straight up been rocking the classic black and white and the nylons since highschool, and my latest pair finally broke down around 2021, and the prices sky-rocketed, it's such a good all around shoe, I loved it as a training shoe aswell since it's so lightweight. Sad to think I may never be able to cop them again as they go for like 300 AUD now which is unbelievable
god i wish so badly they would bring back the "sharktooth" design from the 1999-2001 era, those were gorgeous and looked so much better than the ones they've made since with the zig zag sole
The first shoes I bought with paper route money was the Cortez. My folks could only afford those big rubber toe converse. Now those ugly things are popular with the hipsters. The Cortez had a soft leather upper that softened and became like a second skin. Great shoe made in Oregon USA. Times change.
Thanks for the insight. I have been coming back around to the Cortez's I hadn't worn them in a few decades not since I was a kid in the Albuquerque Barrio I grew up in. I've been trying to restyle them with a more conservative look seeing as I'm in my late 40's and would just look just sad and pathetic trying to do the whole Cholo look again.

I was thinking of Adidas Continental 80s or Reebok Classics, but they might be more popular than the Cortez haha. If we can stock up on these affordable classic/retro sneakers now and wait for the market value to rise, that could be profitable in the long run?
I don’t think Reebok or adidas would do that with their classics but I guess it could happen. I would invest your money elsewhere speculating on shoes is hard to predict and in my opinion not worth the risk.

Asics still sells the Cortez under the Onitsuka Tigers Corsair name and even upgraded it with a comfier sole. ASICS maintained the rights to make the Cortez after its predecessor company stopped making shoes for Nike. The only difference is the Onitsuka Tigers logo

It makes no sense that they have this iconic pop culture shoe but Nike has suddenly basically abandoned it. Look at New Balance or converse. They completely embrace the 574 and the Chuck Taylor's, respectively, and they are still some of their biggest selling shoes. There is no reason why the Nike Cortez shouldn't be in that category too. I mean the movie Forrest Gump was basically an endorsement video for them. The thing I find even more confusing is that you can easily find them in women's and childrens sizes but nothing for men. It would be nice to know what Nike's reasoning is for ditching the cortez after like 50 fucking years. It's not like they are a complicated/expensive shoe to produce.

i bought a pair Nike Cortez(classic) around 4yrs ago and still have it. outsoles are good as new(the outsoles are quite resistant to wear). but the toe box has some of the plastic on the leather wearing out. I got into looking sneakers these days and never realize how 'rare' they are. Now i flex wearing them occasionally. 😅
They really recently just dropped the Cortez SB. Officially named something else. Good analysis. They def were opening up the market for the SB version. Likely the SB version will use less material and be more profitable for them too.

Theres at least 6 or 7 nike silhouettes out that are kind of a "retro vibe casual basic" shoe: Pegasus '83, Challenger, Venture Runner, Tailwind '79, Waffle One,Waffle Trainer 2, Waffle Debut, Internationalist etc...along with others that are similar but feature some kind of tech like Air Max Dawn and the Air max Pre Day. i think they want those to sell, or like you said they wanna make them fashionable by holding on to them and releasing collabs and then putting the regular colorways on sale . Another silhouette they are gonna do the same to is the Air Monarch, thats why i stocked up on those, i got 3 pairs and 3 in reserve of each white colorway, (i dont mess with the black ones), as im an avid Monarch wearer.

I've been rocking the cortez since 1996 (nerd). Bought some in '20... then couldn't find them. Having no shame, I'm still wearing the slightly worn out ones from 3 years ago because I'm not a teenager and I don't give a shit but they're starting to look... not so great. Luckily, they're back on the nike site but not in the all leather look I prefer and for a higher price of $90, vs the $60 I paid a few years ago

Omg i love nike cortez, but i made a mistake buying 7y on sale for $30 online and they fit horrible😅 had to send them back. I wear size 7 men, but sometimes prefer 7.5 depending on the shoe.

I’ve been wondering why Cortez’ won’t restock anywhere! I was in California last week and I saw some junior Cortez’ at the Gilroy outlet but I didn’t get them. Well that was a mistake, fuck 🥲 I’ve wanted them for at least 3 years and just randomly waited because “they’re always on sale” 😫
I’m pissed! They don’t even have them available for women anymore. I’m not at all a sneaker head but these are my staple sporty shoe and the AF1s are too predictable.
Damn. This is one of the most versatile shoes, like a stan smith adidas… i hope they could release again. Its so duxking hard to find a pair with reasonable price…
FINALLY had some extra money for new shoes and I see these are discontinued… my cholo ass dad use to rock these all the time back in the day.

I've been rocking the cortez since 1996 (nerd). Bought some in '20... then couldn't find them. Having no shame, I'm still wearing the slightly worn out ones from 3 years ago because I'm not a teenager and I don't give a shit but they're starting to look... not so great. Luckily, they're back on the nike site but not in the all leather look I prefer and for a higher price of $90, vs the $60 I paid a few years ago

Woman’s sizes are stocked but mens sizes are the ones that are up in price.

Omg i love nike cortez, but i made a mistake buying 7y on sale for $30 online and they fit horrible😅 had to send them back. I wear size 7 men, but sometimes prefer 7.5 depending on the shoe.

i know this comment is a year late but what i suspected was a mix of the anniversary pair they created and covid. they dropped the anniversary pair and pulled all others for folks to focus on those. but i have some sample pairs on ebay for sale :)

As a sneakerhead, i like being a little different. Everybody got the Chucks, I wear the Purcels. Everybody got the Cortez, I wear the Onitsuka. If you are mourning the fall of the Cortez, I suggest you try the Onitsukas. Dope shoe!
