  • Julius Malema is facing scrutiny over his lavish lifestyle after photos emerged of his expensive shoes worn a Durban July black tie event. Are these criticisms justified and are criticisms of the EFF in general justified when they wear overalls and maid outfits in parliament? Should public representatives be modest with fashion and cars?

I love Malema and his political ideologies. Everyone, irrespective of class, should take up the socialistic role of eradicating poverty. I am however concerned about Malema's inability to cling to his words. This is the same Malema who once said that revolutionaries shouldn't be seen wearing luxurious clothing. This is the same Malema who criticized parliamentarians for wearing designer clothing to SONA and accused them of being wasteful. There are countless examples in other contexts where Malema struggles to preach the very same thing that he preaches. This needs to stop. It takes so much away from his integrity as a leader.

It looks like that the majority of voters don't seem to mind their politicians being corrupt or flashing their expensive clothes and shoes fair enough it is his money but you should try and ask where did it come from. The ANC has generated enough tax to be decent houses not RDP houses and yet the majority still vote for him again ask where has those taxes disappeared to. I cannot understand why anyone who is a corrupt leader and stops their people the right to decent housing and a decent lifestyle. Sorry I just cannot believe what people do to each other. We were not poor but not rich and what little we did have my mother shared with others that's how it should be. Look at all the tax payers money was spent on renovating Nkandla even a swimming pool for in case of fire that's the best I've ever heard. Che Guevara, a true revolutionary, would never even think of wearing designer clothing. I don't have an issue with politicians wearing designer clothes, but don't call yourself a revolutionary. Don't invoke that imagery. The reason you call yourself a 'revolutionary,' is because you're trying to make yourself look a certain way to onlookers, and thus, you benefit from the invocation of that imagery. We as onlookers reserve the right to call you out when we're of the opinion that you don't embody the tenets of what constitutes a true revolutionary.

      @njabulomasina4180 12 днів тому +2

@mojokanjani6123 Thanks for pointing that out brother, you are correct.
      1. Revolutionaries are human, after all, with interests and things they value. My understanding is that he owned these as prized possessions and not necessarily for opulence.
      2. Rolex watches have never been considered inexpensive; however, they previously occupied a much more accessible price range. As a point of reference, a stainless steel Submariner Date retailed for $180 in 1957. Adjusting for inflation, that would still only be equal to roughly $1,600 today. To add some additional perspective, a brand-new, stainless steel Submariner Date now costs $8,550.
      3. Ultimately, Che was known amongst the people as a man with a disdain for wealth, excess, and inequality and he tried his best to live up to that.
For me, this doesn't nullify the point. If you invoke that imagery, then you need to try and embody those tenets to the best of your ability. Whether you're Che or Julius.

@YT-xk5jl You need to learn to think abstractly instead of concretely Mr/Mrs "Big Brain". The idea of a revolutionary is an idealized image that no one person can fully embody. As we all know, human beings are deeply flawed. I used Che as an example of a good representation of someone who embodies the core tenets of what constitutes a revolutionary. It doesn't mean that he's the quintessential example. Like it or not, people have an image of what a revolutionary is supposed (given the principles they espouse ) to look like, and Che is an accessible example for many people ...

Malema's lifestyle contrast with his political rhetoric. Julius Malema has been accused of hypocrisy due to the contrast between his lavish lifestyle and his political rhetoric advocating for the poor and working class.[2][3]
Despite positioning himself as a champion of the working class and calling for the nationalization of mines and banks, Malema is known for his love of expensive goods such as Breitling watches and Gucci handbags, which he openly flaunts.[2][3] This behavior is seen as hypocritical by many who argue that Malema is exploiting the poor for political gain while enjoying the benefits of capitalism himself.[2][3]
Additionally, Malema has faced criticism and legal troubles related to allegations of tax evasion and corruption, further undermining his credibility as a leader fighting for economic justice.[3] His past convictions for hate speech have also been a point of contention, as they seem to contradict his claims of representing the marginalized.[3]
While Malema has been able to build a significant political following, especially among young and poor black South Africans, his hypocrisy and controversial behavior have raised concerns about the sincerity of his populist agenda and the potential dangers he poses to South Africa's democracy and economy.

If he behaves hypocritically the voters will notice and it will show up in his support. To me the bloated size of government is much more obscene than this single minor event. South Africans are pretty unanimous in WHAT we want to achieve, (e.g. eliminate corruption and poverty as a start), but we are divided on HOW, i.e. with what ideologies and economic policies we should follow to achieve these goals. There are many countries that tried the marxist/socialist route which advocated for equality over equity, and which are now basket cases, and there are many countries that achieved economic success following free market and even libertarian principles that have achieved spectacular success in reducing poverty. I would rather trust politicians (e.g. Herman Mashaba) who have actually run businesses (where the real value and jobs are created), than the career politicians who don't know how to do anything but distract and divide the population. Bigger government is not the solution, it's the problem.

The reality is .... Mandela was not poor ... he lived in Houghton a very affluent suburb, as much as anything else I think it is attitude rather than material things. Politicians often have side hustles and businesses etc that existed before their entry into politics. Also political connections do not hurt when it comes to business ... no problem with that as long as it is above board. I think actions speak louder than words ... represent the poor etc in action and that will speak louder than any words or gucci loafers. SA is not the USA where business is run by an intermediary while you are president!
The other reality is ... that in the case of the EFF they are in parliament not in government so they have no control of policy or spending ... they are merely a voice. I believe most people would rather be represented by someone who is successful that one who is not. The clothing is a representation of this ... in the correct places. Does Julius arrive in the townships dressed like that?

Is supporting African designers dressing down. What a wow. 😢Him wearing expensive suits to work, it's okay I guess. But he wears overall to represent those who vote him. Then explain why doesn't he and his wife use the Durban July as an opportunity to show case an African designers, from shoes to accessories. Wants to unite one Africa so we can trade easily. So there is African designers he could have chosen. Give a talented artist a break and make them big. Is he not a sell out for the economic empowerment program he is all about.

The problem I have is a man complaining about "white monopoly capital" but spends his money on white owned spaces, goods and services.

If we follow this argument of politicians adjusting their lifestyle to a modest and non-opulent manner then we might as well say they should never attend events like DJ or fancy events.

😂😂Even boers wear expensive stuff and drive those two tanks cars, simply that they wear non-commercial clothes, but if you look, even their farm clothing in their shops are too pricey.

One thing that people miss is that, Julious has a job and a salary. He uses his money like anybody else to buy himself what he love. It is very narrow minded for people to think a public representative should look poor because they fight for poor people.
