Thank you. I enjoyed watching this. At first i was bothered by the lack of spoken instructions, but then i realized that i am actually learning a lot just from watching and really playing attention to which cuts you are making.
You've also given me the confidence to take on a 7(?)- year- old cherry tree in my yard that has never been properly printed. I may never have had the courage to cut so much. Looking forward to seeing the results in the years to come!

It was neat to see from the pruners point of view. One gets the idea of what the goal is then starts to select what the next cut will be. It is victory when you guess correctly. This is a superb teaching strategy! I get it now! Thank you!

Presumably it could also be used on other stone fruit like apricots, peaches, nectarines, damsons, green gages, sloes, but it would depend on how they are being trained.
I am going to try it with my overgrown Victoria plum but my apricot tree is in a greenhouse and it has escaped out of the roof and has survived the storms and frost in winter.

    Wow,
How wonderful to find such a video.
I have 2 Cherry Trees, Rainier and a Bing, supposed to be Dwarf tree and it grew to 25-30 ft for we have not prune at all for 10 years.(no experience)
The tree has 3 main stems and each grew straight up. After 5 ft it started 5 new branches like an upside down umbrella and then repeated on the next 5 ft and so on. It grew very big and less than 10 fruits per years.
Thank you for the video. The hardest part is to have the gut to cut the main thick branches that grew so big and by cutting it seems like a waste all these year but a sacrifice must be made for better fruitful year to come.(no guts no glory I guess). Excited and scary too. 10 years are a long time.
May I summarize or ask the ideas from the video, we are attempting to do.
    1. To trim all middle stems to make a clear opening in the middle.
    2. Leaving the side branches and trim it down to make like figure of a bowl correct?
    3. I have 4-5 sections, like stacking 5 upside down umbrellas on top another.
    * do I cut all upper 4 umbrella branches and leave the bottom one alone?
    4. It is September(Zone 5) - can we proceed to trim it now or what month be best to approach this major over haul?
    Thank you so much.

If you watch again, he took out those inner, crossing, dead limbs, so the Tree has a Goblet Shape (or wide shallow Champagne Glass) Shape.
All that inner growth was Chopped / Lopped out. Simples.
Means the Tree has room to grow outwards and have Branches that will be better long term. And have more Fruit !
I saw the difference and I don't have a Cherry Orchard, just a Two Metre (x8 Foot) Tree that birds eat all the Cherries off before I can even pick them or reach them. Off to get my Loppers out. . . Chop chop. 😂

Best video yet! I have watched & watched & watched. Finally I get "it". I have 3 mature trees that need "help". Those thicker stems are left quite long? Is this for structural integrity so to promote more younger wood? I thought younger wood closer to the base would encourage better production? If you have a problem with the amount of fruit, it is not a problem with pruning and height, but other factors such as the weather and a high chance that your cherry tree is self-infertile,and needs a pollinator.

How did you position yourself safely when using the chainsaw at considerable heights above ground? Fall protection & protection from falling thicker branches is very important else the unexpected pruning may take place on the pruner! 😆

@@CherryFarmEurope well done. I've got a coupe of plum trees that were completely knotted with branches and suckers. The tree is alive but overgrown and a lot of the branches are dry. I removed all the suckers and inner branches that I was able to reach. Now I'm wondering if it would be helpful for the tree to shorten the main leader to about half so the tree can get more energy. Don't know if that makes sense

    • @CherryFarmEurope

Shorten the main leader the following year and leave the tree to regenerate.

Hello! Thanks for the videos. They're great. Just wondering, I have a bing cherry tree that is 15 years old that needs to be pruned because it has never been pruned. I've watched the above video. What would you do with this tree? The same thing as you did in the video or would you cut it down to the way you did in the video for the 30 year old tree? Here are two pictures.
