I've absolutely never heard falsetto so intense. Some people don't like it, I think it CAN get a bit overboard but at the same time I love it, it's hard to explain. I love how he can go from gentle to total, deeply masculine A-A-A-A-A-A-A

      Happy to :
Weaver of life, let me look and see
The pattern of my life gone by
      Shown on your tapestry
Just for one second, one glance upon your loom
The flower of my childhood could appear within this room
Does it of my youth show tears of yesterday
Broken hearts within a heart as love first came my way
Did the lifeline patterns change as I became a man
An added aura untold blends as I asked for her hand
Did your golden needle sow its thread virginal white
As lovers we embraced as one upon our wedding night
Did you capture all the joys, the birth of our first son
The happiness of family made a brother for the one
The growing of the brothers, the manliness that grew
Is it there in detail, is it there to view
Do the sparks of life grow bright as one by one they wed
To live as fathers, husbands, apart from lives they've led?
Are my lover's threads cut off when aged she laid to rest
My sorrow blacking out a space upon our woven crest
A gathering for the last time as her coffin slowly lain
Ash to ashes, dust to dust, one day we will regain
Does it show the visits when grandchildren on my knee
But only hearing laughter when age took my sight from me
Lastly through these last few years of loniless maybe
Does by sight a shooting star fade from your tapestry
But wait, there in the distance your loom I think I see
Could it be that after all my prayers you've answered me
After days of wondering I see the reason why
You've kept it to this minute for I'm about to die?
Weaver of life, at last now I can see
The pattern of my life gone by upon your tapestry

Many out there may not know this but Family was a name given to them by Terry Ellis and Chris Wright, they used to be called the Farinas - anyway these two guys managed the band alongside my band The Amazing Friendly Apple; the John Evan's Smash from Blackpool; the Warriors from Accrington and the Jaybirds from Mansfield. Terry & Chris changed all the names - the John Evan's Smash became Jethro Tull; The Warriors became Yes and the Jaybirds became Ten Years After. Terry & Chris started the record label 'Chrysalis' - some more useless information now only of use to the anoraks out there.

I thought the story was that Kim Fowley named them "The Family" because they dressed like mobsters. Of course, that may have been Fowley making like he had a bigger part in their career than was actually the case - wouldn't be the first time.

    • @waddypete

Best live band ever. Saw them many times including the recording of the live side of Anyway. I first saw them at Corby Grammar School Friday-night dance Spring or Summer term 1968 iirc (they appeared on BBC ToTP, later that same or following year). Jim King and Ric Grech played. Leicester band Broodly Hoo had been booked to play. Rob Townsend had been their drummer and the agency who represented Broodly Hoo was part-owned by 'Charlie' Whitney. Only after seeing them on BBC TV did we realise the weird (and brilliant) band that knocked our socks off that night was actually Family. Still my most memorable gig. I walked Kath McGuiness home that night.

Family were my absolute favourite band during school years with my mate Steve Plant - whatever happened to him!? Saw Family play the Rainbow and Royal Festival Hall in London and even got to see their last ever gig in 1975 at the old Leicester Poly. Chappo was a big Leicester City fan and Lenny Glover, their winger, shared singing the final encore which I can't remember what it was. The gig was off the scale awesome. They played stuff from every album, and man they could rock. They had it all...brilliant musicians came and went, only Townsend stuck it out with Chappo and Charlie till the end. I'm struck by the references to the great Peter Gabriel citing Chapman as an influence. I can hear it yes, but the whole early Genesis thing drew from Family. They were always so creative, an extraordinary breadth of instruments, wildly original arrangements, lots of acoustic stuff, blues and folk traditions never out of it. So glad they were part of my growing up. Bandstand is for me one of the greatest albums of the 60s and 70s, I wore out several copies. I still play it and can't believe the quality of the songwriting. No wonder they never cracked the States. Nothing could be more English than Coronation or Glove, both masterpieces. If if you don't know it, get the album, it won't disappoint.
They did reform for a one off a couple of times, okay a two-off. I saw them at the Roundhouse in London about four years ago near Christmas. Wonderful. Wouldn't have missed it for the world. Chappo is a legend.

I saw a lot of groups during the 66/67/68 period: none on par with The Family: terrifying Chapman: he almost killed Graham (Fillmore East): no american recognition by the way. they opened for Hendrix ant they ate Hendrix! incredible frightening act

Fantastic band with an unusual instrumental lineup. This looks like an extract from their performance at the Isle of Wight Festival in August 1970, one of the many occasions on which I saw them live in the early 1970s. I also saw them live at the Central London Polytechnic (famous for being where Richard Wright, Nick Masón and Roger Waters studied) and got chatting to Roger Chapman after the show. He was a really nice guy and autographed one of his broken tambourines for me. He used to smash them against the mike stand and would get through several in a performance.

I definitely was in the movie when I saw it in a theatre in the early 70's and on a bootleg video I got of it in the 80's. I remember as a high school kid being utterly bewildered by it when I saw it in the theatre, but it certainly made a lasting impression and when I finally got that boot 15 years or so later it Family blew my mind. Sorry it's not in the re-release. Btw, the original title of the flick was just Isle Of Wight.
