I was born and grew up in the Scottish highlands. I was pregnant with my first child when the Scottish parliament was due to open. I was gutted that I went into labour early because I’d planned to travel to Edinburgh to see the overhead flight of Concorde! I was 21 and a lover of all things aviation and my love has only increased!
MAN she is a beautiful plane. Saddened I will never have the opportunity to fly with her. Amazing how, well, "fat" the other planes look compared to the Concorde. Just an incredible machine.
I like how 95% the speed of sound is considered a leisurely speed for Concorde. Bear in mind that that speed is still 10% faster than the cruising speed of a typical subsonic.
Those intermissions like the one about Jordan's ancient city ruins and the one in the first part about some US urban area have to be some of the most random things I've ever seen thrown in a documentary 😅
It must've been such a letdown when the pilots of Concorde were reassigned to Boeing and Airbus subsonic jets. The takeoff rolls probably felt like a mere walking pace compared to what they had been use to. A bit like going from driving a Lamborghini, down to a Ford Focus LOL.
I remember almost causing a pile up on the M25 Heard her, looked up and watched in admiration. I went from slow Lane and across almost hitting Central Reservation with everyone Horning me until I realised what I had done
I used to do import export cargo driving for a company in Colnbrook. Just west of the M25 end of 27L and 27R. On takeoff at 7pm, the bastard always set mine and other car alarms off as it went over at 200ft with afterburners on. Bloody loved it always. So sad she is no longer in the air.
This marvelous piece of engineering has created great curiosity in the heart of the people!! There are some questions, that I would really like to know:- 1. Which of the Concords, featured, was the one that crashed? 2. Which of the Concords, flew to Christchurch NZ; once? I dearly remember, taking my youngest son out to the airport to watch it arrive, I had my hands over his hands, over his ears, I had to try to 'cushion my ears in my shoulders to deaden the sound - (didn't work!) I remember when it took off, we could just see it lifting off through a gap in the trees, from our flat near the airport and I can remember the flat vibrating; stunningly amazing experience.
Big emphasis on the time saved by Concorde but I remember reading that the "door to door" time wasn't that different for "people" who could fly on private jets after Concorde was retired. Quicker procedures and departing on your own schedule.

Yes, you are right. Would have been wonderful to have flights from US West coast to Australia on the Concorde. A few reasons why... 1. Concorde was a real fuel guzzler. Couldn't make it in one non stop flight. Therefore Concorde couldn't have been able to cut flight time that much. 2. Unlike say New York to London or Paris, not many people willing to pay double the cost of first class. Incidentally, subsonic US West coast to Australia is not 30 hours . It's between 11 and 15 hours.
Doing some schedule computations...did the Concorde beat time coming westward? Depart LGW say 0900, 3.25 hours flying time, that would be 12:15 arrival, less 5 hours on the difference so that would be 07:15...!
A small side note "Speedbird 2" was used by the RAF and the US AF, by agreement with BA, as an intercept target on training for fast jet pilots. As the flight approached the UK an attempt was made to catch her at "full chat " and apparently the intercept only happened once. The US AF tried even stripping out everything need for combat flights in Phantoms and Starfighters without any Luck! the only aircraft to catch and fly past and then climbed higher was "BM" an English Electric Lightning Look up that incident and the history of another fabulous aircraft here on youtube if the sensers will stop red lining this!
Looks like fun for the Pilots, but the plane seating doesn't look comfortable, however I couldn't judge it until I personally tried it. I guess its a personal call. it is a beautiful plane to be sure, however I think its too expensive for the average income level. It would be a incredible experience to at least fly once.

I'm not him, but I've studied this aircraft in and out for over 10 years. Maybe I can add some info: -Different flight procedures, different cockpit interiors, the placement of the TCAS panel differed, different cabin interiors for the entire life of the aircraft. BA's last update was in 1999 and called "Project Rocket", it was only half finished. it was supposed to include blue waves of light as the aircraft passed mach 1 as well as an updated passenger display. Andrée Putman redesigned the interiors for Air France in the 1990s, and they stayed that way until the retirement. -Windows differed due to the window blanks, they were for the restrooms as well as the galley area. -The "airport 79" concorde showed the launch interior, it was designed by Raymond Loewy. There were some small changes, such as the machmeter and color, but the complete interior revamp was in the 90s. -With a full load of fuel (including the "overfilling" procedure and subtracting the ballast tanks from the fuselage) you are left with 62 thousand kilograms of fuel in the wings. -It isn't classified, you can look up the October 1977 ruling of the Supreme Court which overturned the JFK ban imposed by The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The US canceled its SST due to funds and instead decided to continue on with the shuttle program. -Concorde alone was just one of the many SSTs that airlines believed would dominate the future in the 1960s. The energy crisis as well as the limited routes allowed due to the sonic booms, among a myriad of other issues, killed supersonic travel. -I don't remember specific examples but I know almost all of the technologies developed for concorde have been applied on aircraft produced by Airbus. -Air travel will stay subsonic, and will follow what passengers agree to pay for. If passengers agreed to pay the same as they do now for airliners that flew even slower than they do today, that's what would be happening now due to fuel economy. But as of now SSTs are not economically viable. The only reason BA turned a profit was because they didn't have to pay for the aircraft outright (though they did eventually pay the full price for each aircraft). BA made a profit so long as the aircraft was half full, and it almost always was. So the airline wanted to fly them until at least 2015. When it comes down to it Airbus killed concorde, BA was willing to fly them alone when Air France decided, back in march 2002, to end concorde services. It wasn't until Airbus announced their end for support that BA couldn't justify the costs.

Yep, beautiful plane all right. But the idea that supersonic travel would be the norm was ludicrous. To save a few hours in travel time you have massive fuel consumption, noise issues (including sonic booms, which prevent it from flying fast over populated area) and obviously (since one did in fact crash) safety issues to consider.

They talk about how the people on subsonic planes look at Concorde with envy almost like they are subhuman or something. Then you find out a one way ticket on Concorde was around $6-$7,000. Then I realized the people on subsonic planes aren’t looking at Concorde with envy more than they are wondering what to do with all of the extra money they’ve saved by NOT flying Concorde. What a fucking waste of money. I only flew one time on Concorde. I was upgraded to Concorde because my flight was overbooked. I got to see how the wealthy lived and it was an experience I’ll never forget but I still prefer a subsonic flight. Concorde was extremely cramped, very very loud and had a constant smell of kerosene. The food was really good but nowhere near the hype.
Porches Ferraris ... all terribly lacking when it comes to breathing space. Not aboit rich and their toys - its the advancenent of humankind and research which leads to other tech. Maybe that a strain-free screw developed for Concorde makes all other planes safer. Concorde was far too expensive! I don’t think the average british person could afford for a flight from LHR to JFK on concorde, but on a jumbo may be a more reasonable price

When was this documentary made? It mentions the crash and a captain retiring in 2002. But nothing about retirement, so late 2002/early 2003?

Beagle76 it depends, heavier flights need more speed to take off, lighter ones can take off at maybe 160-170

They talk about how the people on subsonic planes look at Concorde with envy almost like they are subhuman or something. Then you find out a one way ticket on Concorde was around $6-$7,000. Then I realized the people on subsonic planes aren’t looking at Concorde with envy more than they are wondering what to do with all of the extra money they’ve saved by NOT flying Concorde. What a fucking waste of money. I only flew one time on Concorde. I was upgraded to Concorde because my flight was overbooked. I got to see how the wealthy lived and it was an experience I’ll never forget but I still prefer a subsonic flight. Concorde was extremely cramped, very very loud and had a constant smell of kerosene. The food was really good but nowhere near the hype.

Porches Ferraris ... all terribly lacking when it comes to breathing space. Not aboit rich and their toys - its the advancenent of humankind and research which leads to other tech. Maybe that a strain-free screw developed for Concorde makes all other planes safer. You were lucky enough to fly on majesty's wing fortunately seemed to appreciate it; analogous to the exclusivity of astronauts which is the next step from the one you took.

Concorde was far too expensive! I don’t think the average british person could afford for a flight from LHR to JFK on concorde, but on a jumbo may be a more reasonable price
You would have to compare it to an F seat, which is normally very expensive for an average person anyway.

I am getting annoyed at the narration that goes out of its way to trash every other kind of plane-even other British Airways models! Well, the Concorde’s gone and Boeing and Airbus are still here, so this whole video is starting to sound ridiculous.
