I have my personal trio to judge games on: 1. ATMOSPHERE. This includes everything artistic, like art style, voice acting, music, sound design and level design. 2. PROBLEM SOLVING. Every game offers some kind of challenge, which I call "the problem" which you are supposed to solve. At your disposal you have some tools (game mechanics and such). If the problems or the tools are interesting to the player, then the gameplay is good. Otherwise it's bad (to the player that is, as a personal preference). Some people think melee combat is interesting, while I personally think it's boring AF. 3. MOTIVATION and PURPOSE - as in the video. You need a story to motivate you to keep going. The problems you solve should be tied with the story. If they are not, you end up with games like Sons Of The Forest, where base building is completely disconnected from the story.
The strongest reason for me is that when a new game isn‘t even released, yt is full of „best meta“ tutorials snd when start playing the game there comed a feeling of „playing it wrong“
its a good vid indeed. 95% of games are shit for the exact reasons you described. its very hard to put together different wishes and ideas together in a proper proper proportion that would be good to play. games is a very unique experience and you cannot think of them as you think of anything else. you have to be very specific.

"I know, but that's not the point. I said it (FELT) like an Unreal Engine graphics showcase. I didn't say that Sons of the Forest is built in Unreal."
