DIY How to Remove Rust From Dog Crate

- Опубліковано 12 вер 2024
- Video describes how to remove rust from a pet crate using low cost tools. Pet crates (i.e. dog crates) can be expensive. One this size can be $60 to $150. We received the crate for free but there was rust on the lower portions. To get the rust off I used a wire wheel and my cordless drill. The wire wheel set was cheap and the paint cost less than $10. If you do this, please take the time to make sure your paint selection is pet safe. This was for our dog. She loves her new dog crate and the project was kinda fun. I am sure this same process would work on a bird cage. Enjoy.
This is a woodworking channel but sometimes we all have other projects. Keep woodworking!

Thanks for the video. I'm doing this for an adopted dog. My mom gave me the crate. I didn't want to take it at first because it's bent up and rusted, but with some elbow grease and the help of your video, I'm sure I'll have saved some money and made my mom happy by fixing it up.
That's great. It is rewarding to fix something instead of replacing it....it also saves us money. Good job making Mom happy....sometimes that is a big win. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Appreciate you putting effort into the video and into the job. I'm going to do this for my pup today.
Thank you for watching and commenting. Good luck preparing a place for your puppy.
im using a second hand crate for a pigeon i’m adopting. the pet safe paint completely slipped my mind as i had already bought a can. thanks for the good video, you seem a sweet fella c:
Sounds like a lucky pigeon is getting a new home and refurbished crate. Good for you. Thanks for watching and telling me about your new adventure.
Thank you so much! Finished getting the rust off and now it's time to paint!
I love your voice!! It gives me bob ross vibes 😂😂
Thanks Breanna. I have never been compared to Bob Ross before so I will take that compliment.
The trusty wire wheel. Nice!
Thanks for watching and commenting. The wire wheel can accomplish many things in a short time.
Thanks 😊 my friend. Very first video for the purpose and very helpful . Thank you.
very informative, thanks
Glad you enjoyed it!
I really need to know this, thank you 🦄
Glad it was helpful!
Thank u! Very much needed! ❤️
You are welcome. thanks for watching.
Would a Brillo pad also work? Instead of the wire brushes?
You could use a Brillo pad or sandpaper by hand. I thought about that but thought that would take a long time. The wire wheels were able to get the rust off down to bare metal so the paint could adhere. Another solution, depending on how thick the rust may be, is Rust Neutralizer which is a spray on project that converts the rust to a paintable surface. I have never used it but thought it was an interesting option. rust neutralizer is only about $6 a can I believe. Thanks for watching and good luck.
It would take a while. Harbor freight is cost efficient. Sand paper also
You didn't mention what type of paint your purchased for this project.
Sorry...but I do appreciate you watching. .I used Rust-Oleum paint and the research I did indicated that it was safe but you should do your own research. I can not be responsible for the safety of your pet (I am sure you understand). I let it sit for two weeks before allowing our dog into the cage. see www.lowes.com/pd/Rust-Oleum-Professional-Black-Semi-Gloss-Semi-Gloss-Enamel-Interior-Exterior-Paint-Actual-Net-Contents-32-fl-oz/4459357

Did you use a primer?
did you just touch up the spots that you sanded down or did repaint the whole cage? thanks
I unearthed a nice crate from the depths of storage. I could toss it but that would be such a waste. This means I can fix it. 🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂
Sounds like found treasure to me.
@@MarriedManWoodworking It is a nice 48" size. Well made overall. Just needs cleanup/repaint on some spots.
@@Starry_Night_Sky7455 that will be nice. Thank you for watching and commenting
Thank you , ❤
Did you spray it or brush
I used a brush. Thanks for watching.

Okey thanks for the great information bro❣️💥
@@MarriedManWoodworking ugh it's oil based. I'll go with the Eco paint it's water based. More expensive, but for a bird cage it's worth it.

What if i dont have a dog cage?
Then you don't need to remove rust. Getting a dog cage is probably someone else's video. Thanks for watching.
Couldn’t I soak it the crate in white vinegar and then use a wire brush? I have several weeks before I get the dog.
I thought I would. Do that. Rinse it, and then wash again with Dawn. That should be Eco friendly and safe for the dog.
I notice that the comments references some animal safe paint. I’ll check that with my vet.
I have heard of using a vinegar and water mixture to remove rust. From what I understand you can spray it on and let it sit for a few minutes before using a wire brush. It may take a few attempts depending on the level of rust you have. Make sure to dry it with a towel afterward so rust will not build back up on the metal. checking with the vet on paint options is a good idea. Good luck.
What paint did they recommend?

@@MarriedManWoodworking yeah it was. Thanks though. I’ll check that out. I saw a lot of people saying that you can use any paint because “once the paint has dried, it’s not harmful to the pet”. I’m doing the exact same thing as you. Gotta get the rust off this cage and then going to paint it black.
Thank you cause there is rust from my dog cage
Thank you for watching and I am glad it helped.
