I lost my mom when I was 13 too! And I consider myself visual creative. I can totally relate as my rebellion definitely came from that experience of "I'm the own compass". I felt liberated as I left my own country at 19 and learning new language and culture and doing absolutely different things from what Japanese culture expects a young woman to do. I would never be the same person if I didn't have that experience of my mother's death. A gift!

As a father of three young kids, and as a creative person who actually grew up on a dairy farm, in the middle of nowhere Wisconsin... Boredom is the breeding ground of creativity...if you can entertain yourself in a vacuum of nothingness you can then leverage that imagination and divergent thinking in other areas of your life.
I am also trying so hard to give my kids the space to figure this out.
Great chat here, and thanks for sharing it with all of us!

Having preconceived notions about an industry or a topic really does hurt you because you believe that things have to be done in a 'certain way' and you box yourself in. I've felt trapped with that. I'm a relatively new Realtor in Toronto and I'm trying to figure out how to look at the industry from a new perspective and embrace my difference, but at the same time am having a hard time following through with the ideas that I have that come into mind. As you stated, it's from self-acceptance, the area that I need to work on overcoming. The podcast really does hit home. There are many great topics in the podcast, discussing how to think the right way, details about rules, innovation, being weird, embracing your weirdness, failure and self-sufficiency. It's a must watch!

  • @yeshuaobi2628

I think a big thing to being creative is trying new things yourself and combining the failures and successes you gain from that with professional aid you would seek later on. Self progress + professional aid to gain a well rounded and unique approach.

When Joey started talking about why only 2% of us identify as creatives as adults, I felt like he was speaking my thoughts in real time. Your take on this Chris was a perfect. I was never a conformist, always a rebel, and most importantly, a born artist. As a teen while others planned their futures and their careers. I was already painting and drawing mine. I was self-conscious of this when young but learned to embrace my differences and made a living doing what I love. You are both weird and unique inspiration. Thanks.

It reminded me of one of the reasons I started my business in the first place! To continue the practice of citing sources, for those curious, it was Jesus Christ who said “A prophet is not without honour except in his own town and in his own home.”
    Mark 6:4, Matthew 13:57, John 4:44.
Also, @JoeyCofone, I think you might find it interesting to look up the biblical association with the name Baron Fig. I looked up the definition on your website to clarify the company's intended meaning, and I get it, just FYI it holds a different message biblically.

From the lessons of Jurassic Park, we always should be asking not just “can I do this?” But also “should I do this?” Tesla being an example. The questions were “how to make a self driving car?” > “how to make them see the road better”> etc. but what if someone said “why is it so hard to create a self driving car due to the unpredictablly of humans” leading to “why do we need cars when there’s trains?” Or “why do we have such car centric cities?” So when tapping into creativity allows more people to feel like they can do anything they set their mind to, but then we should also be asking “should you do it”? And I bring this up in creative spaces and then I’m the weirdo! But I bet in other spaces, it’s not wierdo. So being wierd is always in context of what you’re surrounded by. Do you want to be the unique one all the time? Or do you want to be unique only in whatever is the dominate culture at the time?

I believe I'm roughly the same age as Chris, we have the same hairdresser, and I grew up and spent most of my childhood reading Marvel comics (and playing with Lego). As a teenager, I also started to get into graphic design through skateboarding (and music). And Jim Phillips had such an influence on me at the time. I'm sorry, but I have to steel your line. reality is people LOSE interest on creating and figuring out how things work, they just ACCEPT it, just like people get used to use a software and forget the skills (say you are amazing at illustrator but cant draw a stickman or even logos from memory, or create beautiful websites in squarespace but have NO IDEA about html css)

I just thought about what an epic conversation it would be between Scott Adams and Chris about creativity & productivity systems.
I think these conversations motivate a lot of viewers to, if anything, start that “what if” question in their minds, and now they’re open to believing it’s possible - Yes, you can write a book too, you can create, you have to work hard and also don’t forget to love yourself on the journey, but you have to work hard. The cool thing about working hard as a creative is that it’s FUN! 😅

I've been following you for years and your thinking style, behavioural patterns and conversation style is predominantly introverted. Just my observation. I suggest you do the Big Five personality test to get a more accurate analysis. I don't think it is relevant as much for you because you are highly self-aware with a high level of self-worth so you are already on the right track. That's the reason for the tests. I am not a big fan of podcasts and talk shows, but this was one of the most comforting things I’ve heard. I was always the weird kid who loved to read manga, or anything to do with Japan (it wasn’t cool back then like it’s hyped today), I grew up in a small religious town so I stood out with my rainbow hair and “funny” clothes. I had a few very close friends who loved my weirdness (we made up imaginary friends and our own language), but as an adult you lose that but every now and then you find these people who share their inner weirdo with you and it’s magical, like you did here ❤
