🟢 Info UPDATE:
After the Hub Replace process is complete the original hub will be removed from SmartThings and if it’s online at the time of the replace will also automatically be factory reset. If the hub is offline at the time of the replace it will still be deleted from SmartThings, but not factory reset. If that hub is powered on again at a later time it will not connect to the SmartThings platform, but any local routines previously stored on the hub may begin to execute. So if the hub is going to be used again it is recommended to factory reset it to ensure it is not only ready to be set up, but also so it does not interfere with the existing network.
Currently, backups are done roughly once every 24 hours (with jitter) though some key events can trigger them to happen more immediately for specific network changes. These backups are sent encrypted and only the most recent backup is stored. The specifics here may change over time as SmartThings see how the current implementation and configuration fairs in practice.

God. I’ve been with them for 11 years. Three hubs. It’s about freaking time. Last time was this July. 140 devices and at least as many automations.
Absolutely way overdue Melissa!! 🤨 Sorry you had to go through all of the conversion trouble.
I love your quiet and clear "lessons"
I appreciate your kind remark! 😀
This is great news. I'm getting a new Bespoke fridge with built-in ST hub. This will be awesome to transfer my ST V2 network to the new refrigerator based hub!
Absolutely! It's about time.
It's about time!!! 🎉
I agree!
This is one feature that's long time coming and it's finally here. Should have been part of smartthings since the beginning.
I agree Luis. We should also have the ability to back up locally to a thumb drive, in my opinion.
Do you have a video on how to transfer Smartthings hub and connected devices to a new homeowners Samsung acct? I sold my home with my Smartthings hub and devices still intact but I don’t know how to transfer to the new owner. Great videos by the way
I do not have a video that addresses this Matt. However, I can refer you to a SmartThings Community article that suggest how to address this matter. Please follow this link: 🔗 community.smartthings.com/t/transfer-ownership-of-account-in-st/164540/2
Do you know any way of integrating the ratgdo to smartthings?
I see you posted this question on the ST Community. That is likely the best place to source an answer: community.smartthings.com/t/integration-solutions-using-mqtt/245186/550?u=buds_smart_home
Thank you for the video, Do you know how often backups are taken? Thinking if my hub died how much i would lose, its a shame you cant set a frequency for this.
Hi Marc! The thread was not specific about backup frequency, unfortunately. I will post this question on the ST Community forum and let you know if I get a definitive answer.
According to an engineer on the SmartThings community:
“Currently, the backups are done roughly once ever 24 hours (with jitter) though some key events can trigger them to happen more immediately for specific network changes. These backups are sent encrypted and only the most recent backup is stored. The specifics here may change over time as we see how the current implementation and configuration fairs in practice.
If the “source” hub in a replace is online, we will always try to do an up-to-date backup when the replace operation is performed.”
@@BudsSmartHome ah perfect, good to know there's a backup every 24 hours incase the worst was to happen 😃
Yes, I was pleased to hear that as well
Thanks Bud!, great coverage of this very desirable feature. I’ve been hesitant to upgrade my V2 to the new Aeotech hub that is matter compatible. I’m guessing that now I don’t need the Alexa echo hub that has matter/thread built into it, correct? As always, love your loyalty to us SmartThings automation aficionados!
A very desirable feature indeed Dan! I am thinking to about updating from my V2 hub to the V3 or Aeotec Hub as well. You are correct! Both the V3 and the ST Aeotec hub have a built in TBR (Thread Border Router) so it will not be necessary to use another hub with a TBR to add a Matter device to your thread network. Keep automateing my friend!😀
By Echo Hub you don't mean the Fire screen right? I am waiting to get that so I can get the damn Ring cam on a tablet
@@deepster5150 - I think you were seeking clarification from Dan concerning his comment about not needing the Echo Hub. Since the V2 SmartThings hub is not equipped with a TBR (Thread Border Router), V2 SmartThings users must have another device that has a built in TBR in order to establish a Matter capable Thread Network and add Matter devices to their Thread Network. SmartThings users that upgrade to the SmartThings V3 Hub or the Aeotec Hub (rebranded ST V3 Hub), will not require an Echo or other device with a TBR to serve devices to their Thread Network going forward. Hope this helps?
Dan - I just received my Aeotec hub. My V2 Hub now has the needed firmware version, but I need to wait for the necessary iOS version of my ST app in order to execute the Hub Replace utility. I will be publishing a video about the process. Fingers crossed that all goes well in the transition to the Aeotec hub 🤞😨
Im not seeing the “replace hub” option. Is this update not released yet?
To get started you need two hubs that support the Hub Replace feature. Once both hubs are added and showing on the same location in the app, you can validate if your current hub supports the feature by selecting the hub and choosing (⋮) More Options. If the Replace Hub option is not available then your hub does not currently support the feature. You also need ST app version of 1.8.09 or newer for Android or 1.7.09 or newer for iOS.
Sure could have used that a while ago when my v3 hub died 😕
I’m sure you could’ve. That’s not an easy process.
