"Black Betty" was Ram Jam's only big hit in 1977. But it is one of the most fun & energetic songs. Just some dudes hanging out in someone's back yard & jamming out. Love it! "Black Betty" is a 20th-century African-American work song often credited to Huddie "Lead Belly" Ledbetter as the author, though the earliest recordings are not by him.
While some may think “Black Betty” refers to a woman, others claim it’s a nickname for any number of objects, including a bottle of whiskey, a whip, an 18th century musket or even a penitentiary transfer wagon.

The literature I've read on this is that it's 3 references, one in each verse. 1st refers to black powder rifles, which blinded the shooter many times. 2nd refers to black hashish, and the 3rd verse refers to a local "lady"

It's a really old song, a very early blues from Lead belly circa 1939 that was covered by Ram Jam in the 1970's. They made the film (they didn't have video's back then) in their backyard for next to nothing. The radio version had a longer instrumental. Verse 1 is about an old flintlock musket called Black Betty, Verse 2 and 3 is about a lady obviously but a great rendition.

Now this is my kind of backyard picnic. LOL This is their big one hit wonder, but they did have some regional success, even so, this is a classic that needs to be recognized as such. When this first came out on the radio people were like "WHAT!!!" and couldn't wait to be played again to really listen to it. Because it was so short it was difficult to catch it all at first. It was when they recognized that intro, they knew what to listen for. BTW: Love to see you get so into it, Millie.

Others have probably already pointed this out, but this was a work song that chain gang prisoners (about 99 percent of whom were black) would sing while breaking rocks, digging ditches, etc., in the early 20th Century southern United States. Ram Jam just did a rock 'n roll remix of it. It is fucking awesome, though!

You’re so cute! ❤ Okay, about the song. The original was in the age of black powder muskets. The black musician
Leadbelly did a version in the 1930s. There was a for-real chain gang version too. This one is simply about a white guy and black woman in a relationship. It was banned from some radio stations for being racist. Not so. Their affair was nobody’s business but their own.😊

This song is really old! By really old I mean ... it's from the 19th century! It was first recorded many years later, because of the lack of technology. The oldest recording of this song is dated back to the year 1933! So the first recording of this song is 90 years old! It's a real classic! :)

There were a lot of quarters spent on this song back when it was on jukeboxes. I know I played it a lot and so did my friends. It got some radio play but not that much. It was more of a song that was played at parties or while you were riding around partying. Get some cheap wine or a quart of beer, fire up a big fat doobie and put on some RamJam.

I was going to mention Lead Belly, but someone else has too. Check him out, i was surprised. "Gallis Pole" Led Zeppelin did a version of. The best version is, i think on The Jimmy Page Robert Plant album "No Quarter" They call it Gollows Pole" "Black Betty" You just listened to. "House Of The Rising Sun" The Animals. "Swing Low Sweet Chariot" They sing that song at rugby matches in the UK. "Midnight Special" Creedence Clearwater Revival. "Pick A Bale Of Cotton" was in the Steve Martin film "The Jerk" "Rock Island Line" is a good one also. The 60's bands where influenced by not just Rock and Roll but the blues and country people too. What the 60's bands did was change the songs to make it there own. They made great versions. I think lead Belly is classed as Blues/Bluegrass.

There is a very convoluted history to this song because despite many people claim it came from the civil war in the US from the description of a musket rifle, which is false. The origin does however go back to the chain gang era around the turn of the last century as a song black inmates sang which there are early recordings of, which you can hear in this article I'm posting below. But the history of this song takes a few turns. This chain gang song was stolen by a black singer who recorded his version of it in the 1933, then it was stolen again by a more well known artist called Lead-belly 1949, who once again created his own version of it. Then as the decades passed it was picked up by this band you're listening to now but the lead singer added an additional verse to it and created his own current beat of it and it started to take off on the charts. All pervious versions never amounted to much.
Then the NAACP along with the ADL told the lead singer he had to give all of the proceeds of his song to the Lead-belly estate because they claimed he owned the legal rights to that song despite Lead-belly stole it from a previous singer. They said no. Then the ADL along with the NAACP contacted major radio stations in New York and California and told them to stop playing this song, which they did. There was a court case and the judge sided with the Lead-belly estate and gave all the proceeds to that estate and the lead singer of this band never recovered from that loss and he has never been seen since and as far as we know, no one knows his whereabouts to this day. That band created their own version of this chain-gang song, added another verse to it and lost all that revenue to a former singer who stole it from an earlier singer. Truth is far stranger than fiction. bshistorian.wordpress.com/2016/04/30/whoa-oh-who-was-black-betty/ www.reddit.com/r/blues/comments/ls6e87/1933_texas_chain_gang_black_betty/

Music is composed of three parts. Lyric, Rhythm and Melody. The challenge of Rap is that is missing one third of that formula. No melody. Try what I call the 'Whistle test' next time you listen to rap. After the 'song;' is over - try and whistle the melody. Generally, it is impossible. Rap is essentially poetry set to Rhythm. Great lyric and solid Rhythm. But Rap has to work ten times as hard at Black Betty to reach greatness, because the melody is missing or NOT memorable. Thus Rap ''songs' will never be remembered by future generations. They will never be played in a supermarket or elevator as musak. Never come around again to enter the public's consciousness. Black Betty has Melody. It will forever drill into your brain along the pathways of neurons into the music storage part of your mind. Welcome to the world of melody.
