- Is this the end for the Northwoods Family?! (Obviously not because you're watching this video), but if you want to see how we made it, and if our General and all our gear wound up in Davy Jones' locker, then watch on....
We embarked on another ice camping / ice fishing adventure - this time on the lake of Kim's childhood, Lake Winnebago. Now we knew setting out that ice conditions, even with thick ice, can be tricky in some places.
PLUS - did you know there's such thing as an ice quake!? Oh yeah, our own version of Southern California right here in the frozen midwest. Plus... some fishing and the first shots under the ice with our new underwater camera.

The screw in pegs worked. We use a 4x4 or larger peace of wood 2’ to 3’ in length. Use ice auger to drill a hole about through ice, place 4x4 in drilled hole and use it for our anchor point. Usually to pull us through snow or slushy areas of the lake to get unstuck. Works great.
That’s good thinking. After we put in the anchors I thought about drilling two holes and running the strap through - but the one strap I had was pretty short. I cut down our recovery kit because I didn’t figure we’d need as much on the lake. Lol. Guess I was wrong!
That’s how they anchor the rigs when they do truck recoveries and it’s how I anchor my flip over in heavy wind.
I do kind of the same thing but carry a 2 foot piece of angle iron. Hole in center that wench can hook to then small rope on end of the angle iron for hanging it vertical for getting it back.
I am serious, this family is my hero, true Northwoods. The kids will grow up and love nature and be true survivors. I love it.

I were out cruising in our general probably the same weekend. Those cracks are a buggar, glad everyone was ok.

You’re right on both accords. This was thin enough if we would have hit it with the chisel we would have known. We’ve been out here before… we got complacent. It was a good wake up and hopefully some other people learn from it too.
prime example of needing to know your lakes, especially lake winnebago. You are a very lucky family. Winnebago takes lives just about every year.
Yeah it can be a dangerous lake. We both have been out there before… Kim especially, she grew up on that lake. But get complacent or lazy for a moment and it can bite you.
I grew up in Oshkosh and spent many hours out on the lake. The ice on the lake has always been dangerous, just ask my Police retired Police Ice diver brother who recovered several machines and people from under the ice. I am happy to see you and your family are safe.

My Bud carries a 6x6 to anchor into lake for pull point of bike or sled .In Ontario a rigid hitch is law .Glad your ok ,we have relatives in Kenosha.Johnny
Thanks Johnny! We have learned quite a bit from this incident and certainly can appreciate wanting a portable anchor point. The rigid hitch is also not a bad idea, we were lucky!
Usually xmas trees mark the trail.... keep right of the tree. I been on the lake when a whiteout has happened, just stopped until I could figure where the next tree was or turned around and followed my tracks back.
Wow. That’s crazy. Not a good place to get caught in a storm.
Just drove my vehicle out today a few miles on lake Winnebago no problem and saw lots of others vehicles out. Probably a little better now since we had more cold since. But I guess no matter how good it is there can always be that one spot that’s not so good the biggest mistake people make is go to close to the mouth of rivers also it’s a good idea to stay on the marked areas were a lot of people already drove over so you know it’s good usually.
For sure. Yeah anywhere there is current can be bad. In hindsight we should have just taken the marked road out further then veered off even though it would have been a longer route.
The structure of Lake Winnebago is unusual. Although it covers 215 square miles, it is quite shallow. The average depth is just 15.5 feet. At its deepest, the lake drops to a mere 21 feet. Thanks for the video so glad you did not lose the rig to the lake, I think it would drive me cray cray watching that school of perch and not catching any.
Yeah it’s an odd lake. Crazy that just a short drive south our deepest lake is over 200 feet! The spot we broke through was only 8-10 feet deep actually. The ice we broke through was actually water on top of another layer of ice so I don’t think we were ever in any real danger of losing the machine, but it still was pretty hairy!
…and those perch drove us nuts!!!
One time we got stuck in one of them which was the depth of the quads seat lol

Yeah for sure. Our sled setup was a little wonky and it kept us from being able to keep up higher speeds. Lesson learned!

I don’t know why people drive their machines over pressure cracks at 3mph. That’s why you keep a constant speed running over these buggers! Your machine can handle it!
Yep! Should have kept our momentum, probably cold have continue out even if we broke through. It was harder to see the differences in ice in person than the video shows, and lacking confidence in my path I compounded the matter by slowing down. Should have circled back for more speed once I picked my spot.
I haven't had to use it yet but I took a piece of square 2"x2" 1/4" thick tubing about 2 feet long and put a heavy duty eyebolt in the middle of it and drilled a hole through one end and tied a 4' foot piece of rope to it. I'll drill a hole, connect my winch cable to the hook eye, drop the tubing down the hole, make sure the tubing is flat against the bottom of the hole and winch myself out. Then get some slack in the cable and pull the tubing back up through the hole with the rope that I tied to the one end.
That’s a great idea. I wonder how much weight it could handle? Someone posted a commercially made product in the comments which was cool but pricey. I’m going to make something up like that.
I was also thinking that vehicles don’t always sink immediately when they break through. I pre-rigged some tow straps to the front and back for our last trip (we ended up with 36” of ice 😆), and figured if we were to break thru, there might be a chance to quickly anchor the vehicle and maybe keep it from the bottom of the lake. Give you a chance at self recovery or at least keep the bill down. I dunno if it would work but I have some ideas to play with.

Other half here. Yeah that was dumb. We’re carrying a chisel with us every time now a couple thumps would have made it clear that ice wasn’t good. Wouldn’t have even had to drill that one. Actually was amazing it held the first three wheels, I think there was maybe 3” of ice there above the water pocket. This machine is a lot heavier than our other ones. -A

Good example why I will never go out on ice
As they say “there’s no such thing as safe ice.” It can be inconsistent or weak in spots, you just never know.
Many snowmobilers are killed when they hit a ice heave...

Yeah want to avoid the cloudy looking ice. It was hard to see, should have stopped and checked it out before crossing.
