  • In this life in France at the house with the lake we share a gardening video I show you how to plant a bare-root tree and in this particular gardening video how to plant a bare-rooted walnut tree.
I show you all the steps in planting a bare-rooted walnut tree which are the same steps for planting any bare root fruit trees.
Over the last week, I have planted an orchard of 12 different bare-rooted fruit trees and look forward to the future harvest.
I have planted 3 bare root apple trees, 2 bare-rooted plum trees, a couple of bare-rooted pear trees, a couple of Nectarine and peach bare-rooted trees plus a pair of bare-rooted apricot trees.
Here are the steps on how to plant a bare-rooted fruit tree:
1: Firstly unpack your bare root fruit tree and soak the root in water for 2 - 8 hours
2: Prepare the area where you are looking to plant your bare-root fruit tree by removing the grass around the planting area, the grass is very competitive for nutrients and water so that's why a patch needs t be removed.
3: Dig down and turn all the soil over and incorporate some fertilizer into the soil to enrich the planting area - as we have a lot of domestic rabbits I always incorporate rabbit droppings into the soil.
4: Now the bare-rooted tree has been soaked for 2 - 8 hours place in the prepared hole and look at the bare-rooted tree to see the line on the trunk of the bare-rooted tree of its previous planting level and adjust the hole to make sure its planted at the same level. I always like to dig the hole deeper and then refill it a little so the roots are on soft soil.
5: When you are happy that the bare root tree is straight and planted at the right level compact the soil around the tree lightly.
6: Give the newly planted bare-rooted tree support by providing a stake in the ground - I plant mine at an angle providing support from the prevailing wind and tie the trunk of the tree using a protective rubber fastening.
7: Always water the newly planted bare-rooted fruit tree to finish.
8: if you have planted your bare root fruit tree in an area that wild rabbits are around protect the lower part of the trunk and if you get visited by deer then you will need to protect the whole tree with fencing, and if you have planted an orchard you might choose to fence off the whole orchard.
9: Remove the flowers in the first growing season to prevent the newly planted bare-rooted fruit trees from fruiting, it may seem harsh but in future years the trees will produce more fruit.
10: Mulch the planting area to avoid weeds and grasses growing around the planting area, I like to use the rabbit droppings again to mulch the area, and as the trees are watered or when it rains the rabbit droppings break down and feed the fruit trees.
Those are the steps on how to plant a bare root tree - how to plant a bare-rooted fruit tree.
As part of our new life in France we are starting a program of planting new trees on our property to do our little bit for the planet if you wish to help us plant more trees then please click this link to support us in our goals: buy.stripe.com/aEUeUXcHY5rddo...
