  • Welcome to life in France at the house with a lake and today's gardening video is showing how to turn a rubbish dump into a productive vegetable plot all part of life in France for 2023.
I enjoy making gardening videos and providing gardening tips and gardening ideas and I hope this gardening video inspires you in turning an unsightly part of a garden into a productive growing plot.
This gardening project cost zero in its transformation as all the raw materials, rocks, and topsoil were already on site, it just needed a lot of hard work and the aid of a tractor for moving some of the larger rocks. ( if I was not on my own I am sure the heaviest rocks could have been moved by hand with the aid of rollers and a bit of muscle )
We started our new life in France in 2022 when we moved from the French region of Brittany to central France to commence a life of self-sufficiency in France.
The property has just over 10 acres of land mainly woodland surrounding an opening of 4 acres that contains the lakes, the house, and some open hillside.
Over 2023 we have been clearing land, and tidying up the lakes, and in this gardening video, I show you how we turned a plot of land that was used as a dump for the previous owner that contained huge rocks, and a rat-invested jungle of brambles to turn it into a productive vegetable plot.
I started off by removing all the brambles and then moved as many of the rocks from the central pile using a recking bar but some of the rocks were simply too large for me to move by hand.
Moving the first rocks at first gave me a startle as rats had made thier homes within them but they soon moved away and I could concentrate on the job in hand.

With a friend over from the UK for a holiday in France I soon put him to work with the tractor that came with the property and he moved all the largest rocks with ease including one that must have been over 600 kg.
Once the rocks were moved it was time to improve the soil, within the property is a bank of topsoil created from lake modifications so with a shovel in hand I started the process of wheelbarrowing over 20 barrow loads of topsoil over 200 meters away from the new vegetable plot.
I set myself a target of 5 barrow loads a day and within a week the new vegetable plot had a fresh layer of 4 - 6 inches of new topsoil with 3 barrow loads of rabbit droppings to enhance the richness - before the new topsoil was placed on the plot all the ground was turned over by fork and weeds removed and especially any bramble roots.
Now the fun part of gardening could commence, I had already sowed seeds in pots within the greenhouse and planted a variety of squashes, courgettes, melons and carrots in the newly created vegetable plot.
Watering the newly planted vegetables every day they soon began to thrive and very soon from a jungle of brambles emerged a jungle of vegetable leaves soaking up the sun from this south-facing plot.
My intention was to also create another raised garden from rocks in front of the static home but decided to turn an old rowing boat into a large planter for strawberries.
