From 4:21 to 5:18 Simon looks progressively more terrified/sad each time he glances at Scott. Jokes aside though it was a great video! Much respect to you Si
Andreas Dalhaug I was feeling a bit sorry for the guy, the group was pushing 40kph on the flat and I was interviewing him just off the back. That's so serious cool under pressure from Scott!
+Global Cycling Network I think electronic items like shifting shouldn;t be paired with bikes because the whole point of the bike is that it;s not bound by electricity
You are really making the SRAM guy work hard to explain his product, he looks like he is ready to be dropped any moment in his story. Reminds me of Matt!
I really like your video's, but the volume of the music is too loud for me compared to the volume of the speach. I constantly have to change the volume. Maybe other people find this annoying also?
After seeing the picture of Dan in the white Cervelo Test Team kit (who knew??" I can assure you that those are not the smallest levers in the peloton.
Great vids! My dream bike now consists of the hydraulic disc version of these levers, and a frame that only has cable routing for the rear brake -no cable routing required for the derailleurs! This groupset makes a frame designers job easier -no internal cable routing for gears and no need for an internal battery as with Di2.
The method of front derailleur shifting on this groupset seems unfortunate. When you change chainrings on a mechanical groupset you almost always change at least one and if you're using a compact crankset sometimes even two cogs in the rear simultaneously with the shifting of the front. With this groupset the front and rear shifting would have to happen one after another as opposed to at the same time, disrupting a rider's rhythm.
Hi Si! You said the shifting method was different to what most mechanical shifters would use, in that one shifter shifts up and one shifter shifts down -- how then do you shift between the big and small chainrings on a climb? "Little ring, big ring, little ring, big ring! Brilliant!"
I've been waiting for this for my Cervelo P5. I've always run SRAM red and been waiting for this for awhile. Hopefully they're using the new shifting setup for the TT bars.
+Raymund Regidor We will all hit the 55+ mark sooner rather than later and we will be slow compared to now. It's those cashed up former fast guys that keep the tech going so those parts become affordable to the younger crowd.
I'm much the same as i have the cash to splash but i still like to wait until i see a what i consider a fair price point. I know what you mean about the guys who are onto the latest and greatest but lack ability to start with but hey we all need those guys.
I currently use Di2 on my Tri bike which makes all the difference in the world being able to change gears in aero or while on the hoods. Hows battery life? That's a small battery in comparison to a Di2 system.
And we have a winner! Here I am in October of 2018 and we have Dura Ace + Ultegra Di2 - as well as Campagnolo's new Super Record electronic groupset and something similar from FSA. But no one else has attempted the SRAM e-tap wifi method yet.
Having just re-cabled my SRAM Red shifters (getting the cable to thread through the shifter is a nightmare that involves liberal use of beer) I can't wait for eTap and never having to re-cable again. Whether I am ready to spend the money, well that is another question for another paycheck.
ETAP is wicked and bombproof with maintenance ! ...interesting in this video chainring change is super quick....not on my set, much slower ! be interested to hear other users experiences of chainring change ?
So if you have to press both buttons at the same time to shift to the other ring, you can't change gears on your rear derailleur at the same time right? I'd think that would be kind of a problem for example if you approach an ascent and want to shift into the small ring but not have that huge jump in cadence so you shift down at the front and at the same time into a smaller sprocket at the rear. How do you handle that kind of situation with that new kind of system?
Nice work Si, and it looks like a great Groupset. A few questions - (1) The front mech - does it still have the Yaw function, or does it auto-trim like DA Di2 9070 ? Did you get any cage rub in 53/25 ? (2) Shifting in the front - do you have to hit both buttons at exactly the same time, or will it still shift if you hit one button a split second before the second ? (3) You mentioned that the other parts are the same, but I will ask - I assume the Aerolink brake callipers are unchanged ? Thanks
LosihoTTT Yeah the front mech still uses Yaw, and it worked perfectly on my bike here. As for the front shift, it activates a shift as soon as both levers are held down simultaeously. So you can press and hold one and then tap the other and it will shift. As for the brakes, I'm not 100% sure but I would assume they are the same. New graphics look cool though.
+mcguffin ??? A bit pretentious because I'm curious and asked more questions ? Do you have anything worthwhile to contribute to the video, or do you just feel like trolling ?
I like this more than Di2 just from looking at it - di2 has effectively 3 levers, this is more simple. I'd like to move away from the big S, as it seems to be confusing itself and having incremental altherations/changes between parts, so that you HAVE use whatever part. E-TAP: a bloody good thing!!
i love my 1.2 frame, but for some odd idea i think it may be a bad idea to buy this for it. as i never used another frame. i have just upgraded the components. would it be alright to buy this or should i just try different frames that are carbon?
Why isn't there an option to have the front change automagically when it needs to? No need to double shift the front DR. Just imagine a continuous sweep of gears and the left and right levers run through them all. A simple bit of software to change the front ring and shift a few at the back when the crossover comes alon..
Is si using a Quarq power meter and Garmin vector pedals. Also i was wondering if you could shed some light on bike fitting my friend who i race with has just had a bike fitting and says he feels better for it.I have a hemivertebrae and scoliosis in my back and this can occasionally cause pain once i have finished my ride or during it has also prevented me using tt bars.I have called around bike shops about bike fitting some say good things others bad for example they may change saddle height to much and cause you start using different muscle that you haven't used riding before and this can take a whole season to get used to using new muscles. I was wondering what your advice would be and if you had any tips. Keep up the great content :)
I have Di2 on my canyon and added sram eTap to a second bike I have (Giant) I have noticed that when totally crosschain happens (big ring, big sprocket) there is rubbing on the front derailleur . is there something not setup correctly? or eTap doesnt micro adjust front derailleur like Di2?
I've been riding the Ultegra DI2 for the last 2 years. Cant see why I would give up that to go wireless. My shifts are super fast, and the battery charge lasts for about 1000 miles of hilly riding.
I often shift from front small to big and back a couple of gears on the rear to maintain momentum and cadence, scooping both the paddles inwards on my Rival setup. Is this in anyway possible? Or will I have to shift into big then quickly try not to lose momentum before making that rear change?
So you guys are at the eurobike? Get in touch if you need some good places to ride/film/having a beer/coffee...live and ride here and know one or two places to go ;)
How about if you want to shift to your small ring and down the cogs at the same time like I can on my Campag Record thumb shifters? Press both thumbs at the same time and now I'm working with shorter ratios and when I want to shift to my big ring and taller cog I press both paddles together and I'm working with bigger ratios. It does not seem possible with this...
Eoin Mellon I reckon all sponsored teams, since this will be their top-end group. There might be that one electro-sceptic who might fear for some EW from fans perhaps :D
Like Di2 it's just not relevant to private individuals, no team car for me when 50miles from home! At least mechanical can be Mcgyvered into working, when electronic breaks it's all over. As long as they keep a mechanical option at all levels and don't drop it for electric on the higher group sets fine.
You need to get more of these corporate people out on their bikes, it's hilarious. I've never seen a man look more uncomfortable or unnatural on a bike as that dude from SRAM.
Question: One of the distinguishing factors for me between SRAM and the other groupsets is the ability to do the sprint shifting. Given how they've changed the shifting with eTap, is the sprint shifting capability lost?
+Sam Stead nope, there's functionality in the drops to pull the shifter in towards the bar independent of the brake lever so you can shift the rear mech while sprinting but keep your grip firmly on the bar instead of reaching out towards the levers like you would need to with Shimano.
+Steve Hsu the lever is still in the same place, so has to move with the brake lever, I've no doubt you can still do your sprint shifting. (I must try this out sometime)
Thanks, GCN. Do you have any word on price or weight? How do you charge the units, are there 4 separate parts to charge? What's the battery life like? Also, what operation is required from the shifters to change chainrings? This was a little unclear from the video.
I equate this to something like air jacks on a race car. Sure you could install air jacks on a street car, but what's the point? Useful for racing, but a floor jack and stands is just fine for a street car. Similar this, useful for racing, but what's really the benefit in a non-racing scenario? I guess if you have money to blow... Then there's the issue of the shifting being completely different than every other system. So if you have multiple bikes you'll likely have to "get used" to shifting different every time you switch between this bike and another, similar to getting used to different clutch pedal feel in different cars.
Little ring, big ring! Are the eTap shifters the same as cable shifters in that the left side is front mech, right side is rear cassette? It sounded in the video as if the left front was front mech up and right front was front mech down, and same for the rear (smaller paddles).

I'm still completely bought in to Sram's "Mechanical Advantage" crap where they emphatically stated that electronic shifting has no place on a bicycle. Either way, this was a nice commercial.
I feel that Campag are getting left behind here! Gone are those halcyon days when Campagnolo Record or Super Record was the standard to which all aspired. How long will it be before we see Campag wireless gears, let alone hydraulic disc brakes
Very cool BUT disappointing that the shifters do not cater for hydraulic braking. This group-set would be a beautiful addition to the Izalco Disc 2016, but that obviously won't happen. If SRAM want this to be competitive with all of the future road disc releases then they better get to work on a hydraulic brake eTap shifter.
poor FSA already lost the groupset race with their semi-wireless. Sram's eTap really hit the jackpot if the shifters play well with DA9000/ee rims brakes

+Ronald Tartaglia Why would you want to use it for off road use? I do not think the electronics would fair too well with constant high impacts from jumps or crashes.
i am still waiting for improved hub gears for racing bikes.. i am not a fan of Derailleur gears. hub gears do not have open parts, which can get dirty very easy.
Hmmm... Not too convinced about SRAM's shift logic. Pressing R lever inward should move chain to left and vice versa. The action should be like moving the chain. In addition, shifting relies on 2 hands so taking a bottle during a front shift is not going to work. Also, if you have a bottle in hand you won't be shifting up or down at the rear. On Di2 you can plan accordingly. Bottle in R hand, you can still shift front der. Bottle in L hand, can still shift r der.

He's running Cantilevers on his bike... damn!
A wireless groupset test in Germany. I guess they have more work to do to make it 'Hans free'.
Jake Lewis Someone's been keeping an eye on the Edinburgh festival!
Jake Lewis comment of the week?
+Jake Lewis you just copied that from Facebook..BBC
You are really making the SRAM guy work hard to explain his product, he looks like he is ready to be dropped any moment in his story. Reminds me of Matt!
never seen simon so happy
+William King when he finally gets his own groupset: ua-cam.com/video/_PSYcHrWGww/v-deo.html
+Global Cycling Network i bet he has posters on his wall of it
since 90 % of your subscriber base don't have 10 k carbon bikes and can't afford eTap shifting you could do a review on new Tiagra 4700
+Esseker Fit Just buy 105. Tiagra feels shit in comparison

Si looked like a little excited kid on Christmas! It made excited on the new shifters, even though it costs loads of money (like loads)
That little ring/big ring shifting was nothing short of sexy!
I live right next to Schweinfurt ... crazy! Hope you enjoyed your visit to Franconia ;)
I need this group set in my life!!
New group ride excuse "Sorry, I forgot to charge my shifters."
Nice singlespeed you got there.
Freaking love the electromechanical sound at the end of the video :) Shiftgasm!

I've been waiting for this for my Cervelo P5. I've always run SRAM red and been waiting for this for awhile. Hopefully they're using the new shifting setup for the TT bars.

Oh my God! only 8 years have passed! it feels like an eternity
When will this be available for 11-32 WiFLi Cassette? I have a inclines and with my riding skill I need to use the larger size gears.
This video has incredible image quality, don't know what changed, but it's nice!
I currently use Di2 on my Tri bike which makes all the difference in the world being able to change gears in aero or while on the hoods. Hows battery life? That's a small battery in comparison to a Di2 system.
a lovely looking groupset! wonder how long it will be before we see electronic shifting trickling down to say ultegra, 105 groupsets
+Andrew Bedford I'd say within 3-5 yrs you will see a wireless option. Di is available for Ultegra.
And we have a winner! Here I am in October of 2018 and we have Dura Ace + Ultegra Di2 - as well as Campagnolo's new Super Record electronic groupset and something similar from FSA. But no one else has attempted the SRAM e-tap wifi method yet.

i wasn't expecting to see a bike with canti brakes in 2015...i guess they still work
big ring little ring.... thats very VERY impressive in my book :)

It's a bit like flappy paddles in sports cars
Cool stuff... any mention of a release date?
looks great! cannot wait
Simon keeps smiling. I think he likes it.
i wonder why SRAM decided to alter the shifting pattern (normally left shifter for FD right shifter RD)..
4.00 look at that guys pedalling style man all over the shop haha
+Theo Wylde exactly what i thought. My 2yo goddaughter can do better

Hopefully a lot

I suspect it'll be more to do with which group set suppliers sponsors which teams.
+rkan2 All teams? LOL ok....
Freddy Martinez All SRAM sponsored teams obviously..
Can you shift multiple gears on the rear with one push of the lever?
yes

i mis a cobbelsection. can't you lose the battery on let's say cobblestones?
Thanks, GCN. Do you have any word on price or weight? How do you charge the units, are there 4 separate parts to charge? What's the battery life like? Also, what operation is required from the shifters to change chainrings? This was a little unclear from the video.
They have another video covering this.
samofdiamonds So they have. I'm such a dummy. Cheers.
What is the model of the FOCUS bicycle he is using in the video? Thanks.
how about using the chain cross on the biggest gears on both side?
What's the song you use at 1:20? ps: Does Si have a cat? Lookat those arms !
+Christian Ortega same here!!! haha

Do the ETAP shift levers have the adjustable reach like the others SRAM shifters?
So, when is there going to be electronic eBrakes?
This video seems to be missing an explanation of how the shifters are different. I had to go find another article for a break down.
+Kate Powers Hi Kate, this was the second of two videos, the first should do what you're after: ua-cam.com/video/mCmxZOHFnSM/v-deo.html
Little ring, big ring! Are the eTap shifters the same as cable shifters in that the left side is front mech, right side is rear cassette? It sounded in the video as if the left front was front mech up and right front was front mech down, and same for the rear (smaller paddles).
No. They perform like paddle shifters in a F1 auto. Right hand up shifts. Left hand down shifts. Both together shifts the front derailleur.
+brianmcg321 I watched the Red mechanical groupset video and it explained it. It would be different from shimano, but winning it would be nice!
Etap is a great name for this!
Well who knew it, Mr Smith from matrix, is a road biker and an engineer, pretty awesome i think
do you have something to say about Microshift white transmision?
You have to press both buttons exactly at the same time in order for the front derailer to move, otherwise the mech goes crazy and shifts the chain up and down the cassete.
I'm still completely bought in to Sram's "Mechanical Advantage" crap where they emphatically stated that electronic shifting has no place on a bicycle. Either way, this was a nice commercial.
I can't wait to ride this
I didn't notice any pressure during shifting at around 5:50
Would have been nice to know about the battery and how long it last and charges.
Watch their other video :|
Hopefully with two or three major manufacturers making electronic drivetrains, the common man will be able to afford it in the next few years!
Does the front derailleur works with Rotor Q rings?
will you guys be at eurobike?
hi i have a question the sram red 22 crankset its fit in any type of bottom bracket or no?
I feel that Campag are getting left behind here! Gone are those halcyon days when Campagnolo Record or Super Record was the standard to which all aspired. How long will it be before we see Campag wireless gears, let alone hydraulic disc brakes
Yes! Now I can drop my chain in .0008 seconds instead of .004 seconds with the mech Force group I have now!
Very cool BUT disappointing that the shifters do not cater for hydraulic braking. This group-set would be a beautiful addition to the Izalco Disc 2016, but that obviously won't happen. Vincent Manuel I would imagine you won't be waiting long!
3:05 lol .."dude you are fucking slow..get off the highway"
Very nice yet still many pro riders are still using the old mechanical mechs in the Vuelta.
I think Scott needs to watch your "How to pedal like a pro" vid!
Im glad the Brakes are cable and not wireless electronic, as I would inevitably forget to charge it! #BigCrash
Does anyone know what stand he is using for his rear wheel in the intro clip?
poor FSA already lost the groupset race with their semi-wireless. Sram's eTap really hit the jackpot if the shifters play well with DA9000/ee rims brakes
I'm not a road biker, I'm a mountain biker. however when could we see this system for off road?
also, how much is it.
if you ar e wondering why I am watching gcn instead of gmbn, well I needed to see what Si was up to of course!

+Ronald Tartaglia Why would you want to use it for off road use? I do not think the electronics would fair too well with constant high impacts from jumps or crashes.
oh Si, you're giving me job envy!
How long is the battery life?
5:59: try it out of the saddle!
i am still waiting for improved hub gears for racing bikes.. i am not a fan of Derailleur gears. hub gears do not have open parts, which can get dirty very easy.
Cool. I main concern is the battery life.
Scott looks so unnatural on the bike..
He's fine, just him ride man. Roadies always gotta be snobs about everything smh.
Scott never skips arm day.
Hmmm... Not too convinced about SRAM's shift logic. Pressing R lever inward should move chain to left and vice versa. The action should be like moving the chain.

What bike & spec are you riding?
Might really be good on those (aero) bikes that don't cable well.
poor Scott, it was painful to watch him on the bike. in any case, great video Si!
