NEW Sram Rival eTap AXS Wireless Groupset: First Look!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 8 сер 2024
- Hot new bike tech tends to come with a high price tag. It costs a lot to develop ground breaking products but, over time, that cutting edge tech tends to trickle down to lower price points.
However, sometimes that tech gets stuck. We wait patiently but it just doesn’t get any more affordable. Electronic groupsets have yet to become affordable for the masses, but SRAM have just taken a big step towards this by introducing eTap AXS for Rival, their third tier groupset, opening up the brilliance of eTap to many, many more consumers.

What do you think of Rival eTap? Let us know 👇
It looks great
First
What’s the point in bringing out new groupsets when under the current climate you can’t buy the current groupsets?...
It’s almost impossible to buy a full groupset from any of the main brands. Even buying single components is almost impossible.
Should cycling groupset brands be concentrating on increasing production of current products so we actually have something to buy rather than new groupsets ?......🤔🤔
i think its awesome from a capitalst stand point. The market is literally 3 companies to choose from. sram is forcing the hand of shimano. Good on them. ultegra di2 for over $2000? GTFO with that nonsense. Electronic shifting has been around for years at this point, if you dont try to remain competative, comapanies like sram will take your buisness. They certainly caught my eye with it.
@@MrAidanturvey It's definitely a big step out for Sram, it will be interesting to see the industry response - or at least to see what everyone else has been developing when it arrives!
3:03 "if you press both levers together, you take a screenshot!"
Simon "some of my best friends are mechanical groupsets" Richardson
But I fully agree with him and I really like how he presents.
😆
Now waiting for 105 Di2
shimano have no choice to release a di2 105 after that
@@fredfred9000 i’ve always thought it was messed up that these bike brands have been restricting electronic shifting to premium bikes. Electronic is so much better and ideal for new riders, and its just so much easier to setup.
The wireless tech and computers running these groupsets really aren’t expensive. The most expensive part is probably the motor that changes gear.
@@fredfred9000 They better. Shimano's been gutted by SRAM in the wireless/electronic department
My fear is that if Shimano ultimately decides to come up with 105 di2, it will be the end of affordable mechanical shifting. The bike industry might just kill it off like they did with rim brakes
@@tahmids4082 I don’t know-disc brakes have a performance benefit that means something to a beginner cyclist ((stopping in the wet), whereas I don’t see the market for Sora yearning for mechanical. I’d love to se 105 Di2.
this groupset is 3 kgs and my 105 with hydraulic is 2.4 kgs which is crazy , if Shimano release a 105 di2 then its game on !!!
Everything I need to know on the first 2min but I watched the whole thing. The video quality is amazing! Thanks guys!
Quality and cinematography on videos like this is second to none. GCN are the best in the business. Thank you guys!
Si accelerating during the opening sequence makes me wonder if he's getting ready for Team Trial vs Peloton
Si is the only GCN host who would push 250+ W uphill while talking just to put the workout in!!
I know it’s a year old but a) love this content as I’m down to a choice of 2 bikes with the rival etap swaying me and b) I love Si doing these kinds of video. He’s hands down the best GCN presenter for ‘new looks’/ ‘how to’ types of videos
That dark green Orbea is siccc!
I've been riding Shimano my entire life but now after SRAM releasing Force AND Rival eTap AXS that's changing. I love the simplicity of building a bike with a wireless groupset, the intuitive use, the option of affordable powermeters and in general how modular the entire eTap range is so that you can build exactly the bike that fits your needs. No matter if that includes a 'traidional' 2x set up or a 1x mullet set up that allows you to ride up ridiculously steep gradients on epic gravel adventues.
Well this increases my hope for 105 Di2 this year. Would be perfect for the bike models next year then.
If they release it this year that would mean Shimano has been working on it for months or years already. Have you ever heard of 105 DI2 leaks or rumours? I haven't..
For sure, this would be huge for shimano!
Would be nice if 12 speed as well
Just go Ultegra di2, still cheaper and your bike's worth it!
I just hope they dont take the 10t approach... but honestly current gen di2 ultegra is just more than enough. Just need price drop 😂
I was lucky enough to score a Specialized Tarmac SL7 Comp after the first of the year (after like 3 other bikes were made unavailable due to parts and other shortages) so I wasn't even looking to get into the E-Tap space (was planning on an SL6 eventually) but when this showed up unexpected at my local shop (Reser's Bicycle Outfitters in Newport Kentucky - hey have to support those LBS!) they slapped my name on it knowing it would've been sold in a matter of days. I have only been able to ride it on any rides over 20 miles like 6 times so far this year...winter in Kentucky is NOT great for outside riding) BUT I will say I am so far LOVING this set up. It is smooth, it's deliberate and synching the front and rear derailleur for maximum efficiency going into climbs or whatever is amazing. I am already threatening several local PR segments and its only the first of March. This set up on a decent aero minded bike really is a leap forward....so who has a deal on some carbon wheels?? :)
good luck getting hold of it! My LBS here in UK have 10 sets ordered, they are told 1 coming end of June, 2 in August and the rest next April!!!
Single sided power for less than $250 is a game changer for power meters.
Love my Red AXS and Shimano would have be make Di2 very very special to get me to switch back
Rival AXS hydraulic shifters plus Eagle AXS RD and Eagle cassette is now the ultimate gravel mullet! Thanks @GCN
Specially with the GX wireless.Oh what a timing
Yeah I saw this coming a mile away, now I wonder if there will be a Rival 12 speed mechanical option since Rival has been 11 speed and could never quite take much of 105s market share away.
@@mrvwbug4423 They're probably gonna drop that when shimano dura ace/ultegra di2 12 speed will come to market
Well at the moment you are right, but I actually would wait for Shimano to bring something competitive because the GRX shifters are so much better in terms of geometry compared to the Rival
@@a_aus_pe Not sure I understand? I like the feel of Rival and have had them on more then one bike. Personally I do like the Shimano software better and I think it shift better then SRAM. But for now to be able to convert my mechanical shifters and brakes to electronic for $400 plus whatever derailure I decide on is a great option.
105 Di2? Please Shimano please
Amazing value! Very excited for this To become available.
Considering that the whole cycling industry has increased prices by approximately 70% in the last five years this is a major shock!
Sweet. Haven't upgraded my groupset on my gravel/allroad bike for 5 years. This could be the one.
I'm all in favour of trickle-down tech in cycling... but one of the things I enjoy most about a bicycle is that (in my case) it's purely mechanical and uses basic off-the-shelf parts.
When part of my work involves fixing (often flaky) computer issues, I sometimes get tired of how electronics and batteries don't tend to age gracefully. It's why my home computer has reverted back to a wired Ethernet connection and why most of my power tools are corded.
Very nice! I will look for it in my next bike. Thankful for trickle down technology
Excellent news, looking forward to pairing the Rival shifters with the GX derailleur on my 1x gravel bike.
Third video today in 'recommendations' covering this product...SRAMs advertising wing really wants this to be seen. Production on yours was best of the three.
its great to b able to come back to this video, as I'm just about purchase my first new bike with electronic group set, SRAM is top pf my list even with with 105 now out and wild, cheers GCN
Have fun! Let us know how you get on 🙌
as it should!
Did anyone else do a double take at the most horrific helmet-hair on Si's head, only to realize it was the shiny sunglasses reflecting the bright sky? Especially from 11:49 to 11:55 haha
XDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
Thanks for changing your video ratio, GCN! I can now view full screen on my minimal bezel smartphone without cropping 🍺🍺🍺
Great Review! I might be buying a Roubaix Comp with this groupset soon. Thank you for the great review and all of your excellent content.
I have this set up on my Tarmac and it is great
Point to SRAM. I hope this will force Shimano to release a 105 Di2 soon.
105 di2 is coming... but it costs as much as a dura-ace used to be
I bought a new bike last year. Costs in total :1299 € for a 8,5 kg "Maschine". (with 105 mechanical groupset) I'm happy with my "Old-school" - Not-e-buddy. 4500 km and just a lil tension arrangement needed. Runs like the first day (and looks almost like that 😍) greetz from Hamburg/Germany
But now, you could buy a 1x Rival AXS group set for the same price... regrettable. 😀
One of the advantages of 1st generation was that if you just bought RD,FD and shifters (+chargers batteries etc) you could stick it on any bike that took 11 speed. No longer. Do you need the whole shebang? Adding chain and cassette - yeah, ok. but some questions that have to been addressed, what rear hub specs are necessary for 12 speed cassettes, do you need a crankset, what BBs do the crankset fit? Mildly concerning if I was a customer with "some" money to spend.
@Global Cycling Network you missed out on AXS web / the AXS app and the data it kicks out. Its one of the more interesting innovations where SRAM has really pushed the envelope. As an AXS user its helped me refine my choices for gearing, tire pressure, etc. Arguably its made a bigger difference for me than having 12spd vs. 11spd and definitely higher impact than wireless or electronic.
Having this be available on a mid range bike is a game changer.
What does it tell you about tire pressure?
@@frodo5882 if you have tyrewiz sensors you get tire pressure, power, speed, gear usage, heat rate, etc vs. time or distance in one spot. I suppose you can still get power and tire pressure using those sensors without an AXS group on the AXS web page...
SRAM axs 12 speed chains last forever. Over 7000 miles on mine and not at .5 wear yet. Only ride in good weather though.
Your the best at these videos Si !
This is so exciting. I've been shopping around for an endurance bike for a couple of weeks now, and an electronic groupset is at the top of my wishlist. I've been trying to rationalize spending $4k -$6k to get it, but now I don't have to! (Well, in a few months I won't have to.)
Absolutely! Best get your order in sharp though and hope that UK gets a decent allocation.
I agree! Except...
the problem is bike are so hard to find these days
The entire Rival eTap AXS groupset will still cost you about 1300-1400 pounds - so not that cheap.
I bought a bmc alr disc 2 last Saturday. I've been riding my '89 trek 1000 for the past 4 years. While some may consider my bike, "entry level", I adore the bike. It looks amazing as well. So no, you don't have to spend $5k for something decent.
@@brandonherrera2891 same experience went from a mercie velo de course 1988 to a canyon grail 7.0. I did not know shifting at your levers could feel so good !
Just picked up a YT Szepter Core 3 with Rival 1x XPLR and Rudy XPLR fork for about $2500 new. I love the feel and how amazing the Rival setup is especially at this price!
I just bought a Rodeo-Labs gravel bike, and I will be putting this on it. I was going to do Force cable actuated build, but I want to go electric. Very excited by this news!
Enjoy the 20 extra devices that you need to charge periodically lol
@@diviscadilek1764 Ever have to charge your phone or laptop? About that easy. You can use any USB charger.
@@diviscadilek1764 MOST people won't have to charge this once a month😂
That might be the best looking bike i have ever seen
The whole GCN crew is on those new Wahoo Speedplays now lol
Sponsorship... At least the Wahoo computers
@@anderssaxkristoffersen1091 Just waiting for that Wahoo Speedplay power meter video.
apart from the final shots in front of the water where he's back on Looks...
I think the whole of the presenters have their own faves, cassette bearings are a big + on the new speedplays !
great video - got me thinking about Rival axs and a bike that has it.
Glad to hear the new group set is more compatible with small hands, but how about for thick ankles?
30 minutes after news broke out of Rival axs and friends already asking me where we can get this😂....am a fully Sram convert guy because of this...Si though, he’s the best gcn presenter for these kind of things
I have a Gravel with Rival eTap absolutely love it.
That bike looks amazing.
Man this Looks bling 💎👌🏼😍😍
0:55 sick 🔥🔥
Bikes with this group set will still cost at least $5,500 in Canada. That's still high end if you ask me.
I could buy a really nice super moto for that 🤔😝
@@Tara_Masika oh yes! Like your style...supermotos rock
Yeah, got a new bike this year for just under $2k CDN this year and I thought I was splurging. Electronic shifting will have to come down quite a bit to make it truly available to the common man.
They will also weight over 9kg
High end is more the the double of 5500.
Hopefully this will push Shimano on the 105 side of things. However I honestly think they'll work out the totally wireless bit first.
Just ordered an Orbea Orca with Rival eTap and I’m sooo excited. Upgrading from 105 and I’ve been dying to try out electronic shifting. Definitely looks like a good deal that doesn’t sacrifice much.
You're going to LOVE it! At least I have so far
@@Shawnakin68 yes it’s been awesome! Shifting is so crispy & reliable.
Shimano resting on it’s laurels in 2021 not yet releasing the new DA, meanwhile SRAM out here releasing new Rival and GX AXS products 👌🏼🙌🏼
Yeah, where did the rumored Microspline road groupset go? Last year most bike media was almost certain that 12 speed DA on a microspline hub was coming this year, but the only thing Shimano did for 2021 for groupsets is the Deore MTB groupsets, which are great, I ride Deore 12 speed on my bike and it shifts almost as good as XTR, but the roadies have been a bit neglected.
@@mrvwbug4423 its coming
It's a Japanese company. And also it's their top end groupset. It'll be out when it's ready.
Heard somewhere that a Shimano had a fire and everything is behind schedule. Just a rumor I heard...
Yeah but it's weird for SRAM to offer this now, you can't get hold of any existing cycling products as it is. I'm in the UK and was in my local bike shops yesterday, they have 10 sets of Rival AXS on order and are told 1 is coming in June, 2 in August and they wont see the rest of that order until April next year. They also said timeframes are stretching out not contracting.
I'm sure latest DA is ready, as it was due last year, but whats the point when things in cycling have a 3 year lifecycle and they wouldn't have been able to deliver many for the 1st year of that cycle. Shimano also had a fire at one of it's factories back in 2018 which had some effect and certainly didn't help. You might as well delay things until supply chains improve - I haven't been able to source DA hydraulic hose kits anywhere in UK, I have even had them on order from the big mail order stores in Germany and Spain and the estimates have gone back twice and it's been over 6 weeks waiting already, just for 2 hoses and some olives!!
I want this groupset!
Sounds like GCN has some pretty noisy motorbikes you're filming from! Any thoughts of going quiet and electric?
Cheaper wireless shifting? After fishing for my shifter cables for 1.5 hours it does sound nice
You can build a rim brake version if you really want to by using red or force axs rim shifters and calipers paired with rival axs chainset, FD and RD, chain and cassette
When is it available for purchase? I've got a feeling these are going to sell out fast
I’m excited, this is great.
Thanks a lot for the wonderful video. Could you please confirm if the rear derailleur is RIVAL RD MAX 36T ? Does this support the 10-36 cassette? Thanks a lot.
Thanks for the price info here.
Great value power meter option there, looks the business too.
THAT WHOLE BIKE ! Have you seen that? Wow
I love ULTEGRA Di2. So im sticking with that.
will this fore their mechanical group sets to drop in price?
Digging the green orbea
when they said a groupset, does that include everything like disc brakes and stuff or is it only the chain ring, power meter, cassette, front & rear derailleur?
Si if you had a choice between the new sram Rival etap and mechanical shimano R8000 which one would you choose ?
I am using a 11 speed mini velo, do you think this rival 22 groupset is compatible with my bike?
Can you make a video about a mullet option for gravel bikes with the new GX MTB groupset? Maybe a video for GCN Tech
is it compatible with 11 speed?
Excellent vid Simon - as always very thorough and straight to the exact questions I have in mind! I agree with your analysis - looks fantastic and checks off a staggering number of wants / needs / must haves.......IMO this is the begging of the end of mechanical groupsets (yeah I said it!) especially when you consider how much easier it is to install and how immune it is from the (many) issues that come up with good old cables, including routing them at tight angles through new headset and handlebar designs that are clearly leading the charge these days. If you want to put everything inside a frame / make them completely out of view, Electronic groupsets are the way to go. Best new product from SRAM every IMO. The only question you didn't address that I think is especially pertinent these days: Availability and lead time!? I fear it will be very hard to get your hands on these sets than we care to discuss - even getting a chain from Sram these days is a 4-6 month delay for some models (the whole industry is reeling though admittedly - not picking on just SRAM of course). I want - but when can I have ?!?!?!?!
Fantastic bit of kit for the bike, I’m using sram for years not a bother.
I can't find any detailed video on how to bleed (or re-bleed) new 2021 Sram Rival eTap AXS brakes. Particularly where on calipers should be connected syringes and what is the port (standard or edge)? All Sram video instructions are outdated (for old models).
This guy is the best on this channel. He is well informed, mature and pleasant to listen to
Best presenter....his voice is soothing
If you're riding against a rider with the same system, will it connect to each other derailleur. Like when He shift..your bike shifts.
how does shifting work on 1x? Is it still the same, just no pressing left and right at the same time?
First reaction is: Great! They are bringing electronic shifting to a more affordable price point! But when you think about it carefully, you will be paying £1500 for a groupset that weights 3kg... A disk brake bike in the £2500 range with this groupset will surely be around 10kg, and that sort of money would buy you a sub 6.8kg mechanical RED equipped bike a few years ago. Sure I agree with Si that midrange bikes nowadays can be extremely capable machines, but it is also true they cost the same kind of money top of the range bikes used to cost not long ago...
Be nice if we see a lighter simpler Ultegra Di2 groupset.
Imagine the weight of a TT bike with this groupset 11/12kgs
Odd question, Is the crankset spider removable to install a direct mount chainring?
I recall a SRAM rep saying all Rival level cranks and up are direct chainring capable, I am wondering if you can switch from 2x to 1x install CX tires and use the new system off road.
That’s damn nice for this price! Especially wireless
But I am still waiting for 105 Di2
Ok so i have Rival Groupset with 11-42 at the back, but i think this range is not supported by the new rival etap? Should i go for Eagle then if i wamted to upgrade to eTap?
The ad I got was a Sram Rival eTap AXS commercial xD
Haven't seen that kind of cleats that he's using. I'm new to cleats, what are those cleats type?
I cant wait to get this on a Trek Emonda SLR6
what are the chances of the battery of the RD falling off while riding on a cobbled terrain ?
Does reducing the reach help eliminate the annoying shifter rattle these shifters are prone to love rough road surfaces? I have a ticket with SRAM on this, not heard back yet.
Looks very very good!
Would it be overkill if I install this groupset on a Triban RC 120?
Can you help me out on this? My understanding is that you can't use remote shifters as you said Rival doesn't have the additional ports. I can only use one arm/hand so all shifting and braking needs to be on the left side. Is there a way to do this with Rival?
2 questions... is there any product to purchase?
The other, where is Shimano with their new 12speed
Can I use a regular 10-speed chain instead of the eTap chain with the flat-top links?
Does it able to use Force etap lever with New rival etap F+R derailleur ?? cuz I'm Rim brake user.
beautiful and would be useful if SRAM would make Rival as 11 speed with normal cassette and with rim brake option. I'd love to ditch cables on older bike (which I don't want to change) - but there is no options unless older eTap (still very expensive and looks like only 2nd hand these days).
You could go 12 speed with just a driver change, if your hub has an XD-R option, or lace on a new hub with an XD-R driver. Assuming the bike uses the same rear axle width as modern 11 speed shimano.
I presume you could buy this groupset and then upgrade it in sections, ie replace the rear mech with a Red one or a front mech with a force one? Or change the chain rings for the lighter versions?
That would be an unbeatable argument for the Rival. But unfortunately I haven't found any answers yet. Usually, however, combining AXS parts shouldn't be a problem. Above all, the cassette should not cause any problems. But maybe the rear derailleur?
Invest now in a good bike with Rival and then gradually improve components until you have the desired combination, sounds like a dream.
So if I were to build out my Prancing Pachyderm Project with 3 sets of wheels could this solve my compatibility issue running a MTB clutched long cage etap? Or somehow a inverter to Rohloff speed hub? Is there a way to make hard wired dyno run version? Would you guys sponsor my project I’m willing to tattoo all 3 logos along with my project logo I’m going to start riding to help my ptsd but I’m to large for most bikes 6’4” 325lbs before breakfast with size 13E shoes I’m going to have to build one custom and when I get it trust and believe I’m going to be dancing on the pedals
What’s to stop them from changing the chip again in two years? Then you are left not being able to find replacements when you break a derailleur on a gravel ride and have to buy a whole new groupset. Glad to see electronic groupset at this price point, but I still can’t justify it personally.
What about using that x2 with gravel. Dose that work??
nice vid, thanks si
How come you guys have it so soon? I put an order just the morning it came out around 9am and I have to wait until June to get it!? 🤔 that’s BS
From @SRAMroad on twitter in regards to Rival eTap AXS being “disc brakes only” - “Still compatible with rim brakes if you pair the Rival drivetrain with Force or Red AXS rim brake controls.”
Which just means having to use Force or Red brifters. They assumed most buyers would likely opt for disc, so ditched the rim option to keep the development costs down. The rim brakes days are numbered, even Froome is on disc this year and seems to be a convert after riding rim his entire career before.
I don’t suppose you’d have any idea what I’d need to use a roadie with sram ax’s rival etap on a elite direto x … because I’m losing the will to live 🙄 someone’s said I can use an XDR free hub but I can’t find anywhere if XDR and AXS cassettes are compatible 🤷🏻♂️
I am puzzled by the price tags that does not seem to be in conformity with the foreign exchange rates. Is it simply that SRAM sells the groupset cheaper in the USA?
Can you multi shift in a electronical groupset?
