      @@gimo6881 You could probably blame the lack of Destined Death for that. Nothing in TLB can die permanently and just comes back sooner or later, so they've been wandering around for potentially centuries or millennia, just steadily rotting away and acting on basic instincts, hence why a lot of stuff in the world just attacks on sight. Look at the Wandering Nobles and the line soldiers of the demigod armies, they're like the Hollows from Dark Souls.

  • @DukeButtwater
    @DukeButtwater 17 днів тому +13

    There's a recurring theme of transmogrification in many of Elden Ring's more unique designs: the omen are touched by the Crucible, and develop horns, feathers, scales, and tails; Azur and Lusat touched the primeval current themselves, and were transformed into crystalline husks; and practitioners of dragon communion turn themselves into degenerate magma wyrms by consuming dragon hearts. Even minor enemies like smithing stone miners or the 2nd generation albinaurics who have pledged themselves to different demigods have had their physical forms contorted to reflect the influence of their environment and allegiances, respectively. Physical reality in the Lands Between reflects the metaphysical influence of the Outer Gods and other transformative forces.
    And then you have the trolls. I think FromSoft deliberately leads the player to initially misunderstand them as a savage, animalistic race. Until the player reaches Liurnia, the trolls they encounter are no better than beasts of burden or war elephants. The "free" trolls in Stormhill and elsewhere in Limgrave feel like feral animals. In Liurnia, you meet a civilized troll capable of speech, you learn that trolls knights were once companions to Rennala and the Carian royal family. In Altus, you encounter a non-hostile troll gazing at the walls of Leyndell, and you find the two weapons that represent the trolls' past and present: their hammers and swords. And in the mountaintops of the giants, you find the literally missing piece of the puzzle: the face of the Fell God, which once manifested itself in the chests of the trolls.
    Unlike all of the other examples above, the trolls' bodies are difficult to interpret because they've been scourged of meaning by their transmogrification. When the trolls betrayed their kin and their god to fight for Marika's army, for the Erdtree and the Golden Order, the face of the Fell God was excavated from their chests. The Erdtree's influence took root in its place: the innards in their excavated chests look like roots, their beards look like branches, the the Grace of Gold lingers in their eyes even though they've lost their minds. But more than that, they look like SHIT. They're trapped, decaying, between two metaphysical influences - the Fell God and the Greater Will - and poisoned from within by their betrayal of the former. They sold their souls to the Golden Order and transformed themselves into a degenerate slave race by doing so.
    At least they all got a mediocre UGS with one of the worst skills in the game for their trouble.

  • @jamesnorman9160
    @jamesnorman9160 17 днів тому +51

    Imagine. You betray your larger kin - the Giants - for the Golden Order for whatever promises that they made to you, and in return your have your connection to the Fell God torn out, and then you're doomed to be worked to death in a mine, impaled to drag caravans around for some purpose that doesn't even matter anymore or just left to wander endlessly and maybe find work with one of the demigod armies...or if you're lucky, then maybe you might end up serving the Carian Royal Family as a knight, so you get a fancy sword, helmet and cape. Which might be the better fate for these trolls looking at all the others.
    Also just realising that Iji's Mirrorhelm being used to ward off intervention from the Outer Gods...is literally TLB's version of a tin foil hat.

    • @itsawoodchuck4330
      @itsawoodchuck4330 16 днів тому +15

      I don’t know if I’d say they were tricked, or mistreated. You don’t allow betrayed slaves to carry around giant golden swords. Even as the trolls grow mad they cling to their swords that the gold plating flakes away, even in madness they cling to the duty to the Golden Order and Greater Will. Many trolls also guard important areas side by side with soldiers, even great trolls are treated like and remembered as war hero’s such as Theodorix. Trolls are even amongst the few such as Fire Monks who still keep watch over the the Giants Flame on behalf of the Golden Order.

      @@itsawoodchuck4330 Honestly, the Golden Order has a habit of putting gold on everything, so troll swords being golden might not necessarily be a sign of respect/blessing. (I mean even the roof tiles in the capital are painted gold...)
      And for those tied to the caravans they've been straight up impaled with massive harpoons, which can't be very comfortable. They might be part of the GO but it doesn't mean they get treated very nicely.

    I love the design of the trolls in Elden Ring. It feels like they really landed what DS1 and 3 were trying for with the giants. Massive terrifying, yet pitiful. Like you can see their physical power but also see how much they are suffering as slaves. The DS1 and giants looked good but always looked to well fed compared to hollows to really land that sense of pity for the aggressive giants. The Trolls self enslaved themselves to the Erdtree and were evidently subject to some form of alchemic ritual judging from their root like hair tendrils and the strange tombstone embeded in their chests. After they helped kill off the Giants the remains were most likely used in the same way to create Radagon to fuse to Marika and create a new eternal goddess. The Golden Order really seemed to have it all figured out but they didn't figure that eternal immortality can't stop ageing and would lead to a stagnation and chaos that would lead to the shattering of the Elden Ring and the Lands Between...
