- Protected by the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and Kenya Forest Service, this critical habitat is the location of our Umani Springs Reintegration Unit, a unique centre for vulnerable orphans. Enter the forest with Umani Head Keeper Philip Okode, as he reveals one of his great hopes for Murera, the matriarch of the Umani orphan herd and the first resident of this special unit when it opened.
Your support enables us to be there for elephants. To provide them love, protection and a place to call home - even once they’ve returned to the wild, we will be there to watch over them.
Established in 1977, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) operates the world’s most successful orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation program, rescuing and hand-rearing orphaned elephants and other animals that have lost their mothers, all too often as a result of human activity. But we do much more than this. Through our Aerial, Anti-Poaching and Mobile Veterinary Units, we safeguard the natural environment and provide immediate assistance to wild animals in need. We also secure irreplaceable wilderness areas so that animals will always have space to roam and work with local partners and communities to ensure people and wildlife can live alongside one another.

This brought tears to me..... tears of happiness. Having been there 3 months ago and having seen Philip and Amos and Michael and how they LOVE the ele's there, well, there is NOTHING that can touch the depths of your heart more. It is so rewarding to be a sponsor of an elephant and follow their life, through the eyes of these magnificent keepers, to the day that they ultimately return to their rightful place in the wild. Umani springs is so much greener than the other units. I'm sure the elephants would love to be there. It's just like buffet everyday for them. Thank you for helping and caring and giving the orphan second chance

I am so inspired by the founding big girls, Murera, Sonje, Quanza, Lima Lima and Zongoloni, I would love to meet my orphan inspirations in person. Murera will be a wonderful mother. I have been watching her with Luggard and she is so devoted to him. Phillip Okode, You have a good heart. Thank you for all you do for these beautiful animals. Please give my foster boy Luggard a kiss for me and Murera too. I understand he looks at her as a baby looks at his own mother.
