    "Mookie Betts' swing has probably been like that since he was ten!" Dude, there's a book called the MVP machine that details how Mookie revamped his swing early in his career to become a power hitter! The same process saved Justin Turner's career. There's actual science behind optimal bat path and launch angle, but these guys still ignore all that, talking about what they learned when they were ten! I was taught to swing down too, I did it very well and hit a lot of hard ground balls. Go figure that didn't catch the attention of scouts!

    • @jeremyblascoe8711

      Here’s the problem sir. 99.9% of kids do not have Mookie Betts or Justin Turners abilities. At youth levels kids need to be taught short level swings and learn how to barrel the ball. Then maybe if they wanna make slight adjustments to their swing path as they age, so be it. But you dont start with the most difficult swing to pull off first. Basics. But do what u want, teach the swing you want, just understand kids aren’t mookie betts at 10.

    • @jesswillans3222
      @jesswillans3222 2 роки тому

      You are mostly correct but leaving out a bit of nuance and context. Kids 10-13 mainly can’t try to swing like Mookie or JT because of the timing aspects of their long strides allowing them to adjust to a variety of offspeed pitches, because they can decide when to put their foot down. These long strides can help a bit with power as well, but unnecessary at young age. I teach my boys (10 and 13) wide stance, short step. In terms of bat path however, there’s no such thing as a level swing. The position any decent player launches their swing from behind with the bat above contact point, they then bring the bat into the contact zone (there’s an optimal way to do that, and a suboptimal way to do that) then the barrel should come up slightly into the ball. You are correct that it should not come up into the ball at the same degree an MLB power hitter should when discussing a youth athlete. But I can also tell you that the hard ground balls that got me on base till I was fifteen, do not work in ten year old travel ball 30 years later. Both of my boys are learning how to hit line drives that clear the infield, usually for singles, with the occasional double in the gap or down the line. So whether you want to discuss youth development, or the flat out false statements made in these videos, either about Betts’s swing, or the objectively bad advice of telling any hitter to swing “down on the ball” I’m game.

      Yup I dealt with bad coaching, I had a terrible HS coach tell me to chop down & turn over my forearm. It did nothing but cause me to ground out a lot & was uncomfortable. After I changed my swing back to what I did naturally & had a natural launch angle, I was able to increase my STATS rapidly. Bad coaching continues to ruin young players all across the world.

  • @markboston9303
    @markboston9303 3 роки тому +5

    What they are teaching isnt the quickest path to the ball, because dexterity still determines how you will hit the ball..That's why barrel rate is so important and mostly the end result they are teaching hitters.
    But they are teaching hitters the swing path that will most likely lift the ball with use of the bat barrel. In the past , teachers taught to square up on the ball but for low pitches, you were almost taught to tomohawk your swing into the zone in order to keep your bat square, vs getting the barrel thru the zone. which may make for a longer swing.
    They use to teach you to crouch or to pull your hands in so you can hit the ball the other way. But if you hit with force with the barrel the net effect is less weak contact , more flyballs, a s with good dexterity. more barrel liners and extra base hits.
    These guys are correct but they are assuming that people are being taught to uppercut their swing. Not exactly ..they are being taught that if an uppercut can lead the barrel to a specific pitch or region you hit the best, then that will be your swing.
    the issue is many years ago getting ball in play was touted over homers and walks and extending counts. Even weak contact was considered better than striking out. Coaches would kill hitters swing , even if their dexterity made them better hitters with a slope in their swing.
    I use to hammer pitches with slope in my swing and high fastballs weren't in my hot zone but I could get in front and pull them. Above the chest my swing wasn't made for those pitches but I was forced to practice my dexterity with a shorter swing and bat to get those pitches .
    I hit more balls and seemed more coherent but I never connected on pitches with any power. Instead of getting walks I was always ready to swing even if pitches weren't good to hit.
    Launch angle is just part of an overall revolution to do d results from talent and then building upon it. Not taking it away. Analytics have made it better for hitters to have any swing, as long as it has results.
    The loss of consistent hitting is due to the game evolving. but with all these strikeouts , hitters with quick paths to the ball plane who can put more balls In play will come back again. In a couple of years we will see players like Gavin Lux and Hoerner develop slap techniques to get more barrel on late moving pitches and it will go backwards. As well, max velocity can only sustain teams so far until it decimates pitcher arms. As more pitcher injury accrue, lower velocity and pitching talent will replace high end talent and hitting will turn it around again.
    There was a time in mid 2000s we thought every pitcher could reinvent themselves with cut fastball. In 90s it was the 12-6. In 2010 it was sinker slider. Now we going into the 180 oppo spin and same spin release different plate movement setups.
    Pitching can evolve advantages much quicker , but hitting can maximize adjustments much longer.
    Once spin rate is figured out or regulated in terms of pitchers juicing their spin in the Bauer era, the info will help hitters get back in line. I wouldn't be surprised to see bunts and sac grounders get big again.

  • @jasonglessner1932
    @jasonglessner1932 3 роки тому +15

    Ehhh...fastballs usually always are coming slightly down to the plate. To "square" up the baseball your swing has to be coming slightly up to hit that ball on the exact same path. If the ball is coming down at you - 10 degrees your bat meets it up at + 10 degrees to hit it straight on for the best line drive. Am i wrong? Then again, I'm no pro. I'm just another idiot on the internet 👍

    Today, April 26, The talking heads were discussing the batting average is the lowest this April since 1968
    Then they go on to say, lets move the mound, get rid of the shift, etc...
    I say wait a minute, you fail to bring up the fact that good hitters still have great averages.
    Mercedes(CWS) .414, Trout(LAA) .393, Narvaez(Milw) .389, even Acuna(Atl) .371
    and if you look at MLB stats, you'll see 25 players batting above .307
    No, the problem is the marginal players aren't that good, they need better hitting coach's, practice hitting opposite the shift, whether you like it or not, then eventually opposing teams will loosen up those shifts.

    I think most "home run" hitters don't approach the plate thinking they're going to hit a home run. I think the best hitters go to the plate expecting to put a good swing on the baseball (good bat path with solid contact) and the home runs are just a byproduct of a good swing and solid contact. A player trying to hit home runs is going to hit a lot of fly balls when they miss a pitch by a millimeter or so. A player trying to hit a hard line drive can hit a home run or a laser of a ground ball if they miss by a millimeter or so.

  • @Jbzero999

    This shows such a fundamental misunderstanding of what is being taught. "this is different and so it must be wrong and everything wrong must be being caused by this thing." Guys if the batter is connected to the bat, it will have the same angle as the shoulders. The bat is still being swung out toward center field. Its just more biomechanically efficient to swing in line with the shoulders than to try and "swing level". And FWIW if you pause the Hammer at contact he has a very modern body angle to the ball he just keeps his follow through lower.

    When talking about strikeouts they're not giving nearly enough credits to the breakthroughs in pitching training and instruction from youth baseball on up. My son asked me today how you became a good pitcher when I was a kid. He couldn't even comprehend my answer based on his experiences today.
    Never mind the velocity you also have a new found added emphasis on pitch design, pitch tunneling, spin mirroring, and guys throwing 101 mph frisbees. All created with the help of modern tech like Rapsodo, Edgertronic cameras, all the way down to pocket radars and pitch logic balls and diamond kinetics making amazing info accessible to anybody. Weighted balls which when used properly help increase the velocity and are most responsible for that jump in velo that they mentioned.
    Using Hank Aaron as an outlier to try to prove a point is like using Nolan Ryan as a training example. There was only ever one Hank Aaron! There was only ever one Nolan Ryan! These guys were outliers among a league full of outliers. You can't teach Hank Aaron's hands/wrists. The idea that he would hit better hitting against the pitchers of today is laughable though.
    You go ahead and keep preaching down and hard to the kids the way they did when I was growing up so they beat the ball into the ground. I'll be telling them to get the ball off the ground. Try to keep the bat on plane as long as possible. That requires a slight upward tilt to meet the downward tilt of the ball coming down the mound. Almost like a Nike swoosh or if you imagined an airplane landing and then taking off again.

      Imo the best approach for teaching good bat path to youth is neither a upward or downward swing. I think the best approach is teaching a short and tight fast to the ball, level and hard swing and the youth will naturally adapt/adjust tilt angles to make the best contact as there skills further develop.
      Its of my opinion that teaching either an upward swing or downward swing does far more harm then good and will only cause youth more struggles and confusion at the plate. Imo teaching upward or downward swing paths to youth tends to lead to more chopped balls, pop outs, and overall strike outs as they loop the bat under or over the pitched ball.
      Personally I believe the best approach for youth has always been teaching a good line drive type contact swing... the ability to get lift and an upward trajectories will come, as the player naturally grows and develops... imo theres only so much one can teach when it comes to hitting especially to youth before its detrimental to development... you dont want to be filling there heads with to much knowledge that they dont truly/fully understand, sometimes simplicity is the best approach since so much of hitting still relies on natural talent/ability... you can push the youth towards the correct batting approach as you see it but at the end of the day they've kinda gotta just figure it out for themselves, so thats why imo teaching good contact fundamentals is the most important/leads to the most success.
