Not many horror movies give reasons for showing sympathy twords the villain, Candyman however you can't help but feel sorry for him. The only other villains I can think of off the top of my head who people can sympathize with is Jason Voorhees because of the neglectful circumstances that lead to him drowning as a child. And Michael Myers because he was cursed by an ancient pagan cult (Thorn) as a child, which forced him to kill everyone of his own bloodline/family, which is a horrible fate for someone to be forced into. Holloween 5 touched on this when they show a close up of Michael shedding a tear, as if his human side was crying out for help from the depths of the abyss of torment he's forced to endure.
He looked up after kissing her because it let him know that she was protected by God so the bees were prevented from killing her. So Candy man had to resort to means to get Helen to destroy herself in order to connect with her because demons can't destroy those that God protects
Poor Tony Todd had to really undergo the pain of having to be stung with real Bees inside his Mouth.
